That is the type of card you overpay for if you'll do it, when you know another one isn't coming along. Congrats!

So what's left, Red Lava, Gold Prizm, and what's the third head of the monster?

Red Lava, Gold Prizm, and Orange #/25 (not the Orange Toile or the Orange Wave, which are both also numbered to 25). I'm sure one of those will show up again.

I love reading this thread every day and seeing the awesome pickups. It definitely gives me the itch to pick up some wants I have, but I have been saving for almost a year to go to the National this summer so I can go on a bit of a spree there. I've got some cool (to me) projects like playing day cards of the Black Sox and playing day cards of the 1903 Boston Americans entire roster (1st Sox world series winner). So please keep the stories and pictures coming.

The cradle of the game.
So...I just paid way too much for the 2022 Topps Chrome Anniversary Yaz superfractor. I am now 3 cards short of one of the best rainbows in hobby history.
That's outstanding. Climb that mountain!

Ditto on this thread. I'd like to learn more about prewar... but as a hardcore set builder, I am fearful I'll never be satisfied and remain married LOL

Haha that's definitely a balance. I have to get over my frugalness and sticker shock of some of the prewar stuff. For example one thing I want to do is get a playing day card of the first hall of fame class. If you search around it can be done for 15k or less. Which isn't bad when you're talking about Cobb, Johnson, Ruth, Mathewson and Wagner

ridiculous. Ebay tells me you got that superfractor for a sick price. a 1/1. jesus. I'm in awe. Congrats on that beautiful card.
Thanks! Yeah, I didn't even make a lower offer at that price for fear of someone else sniping.

I’m currently collecting all the flagship Topps/Donnruss/Fleer cards for Tito and Bochte. Have the complete sets for Sparky Anderson and Earl Weaver.

Zero interest in Larussa. I do have most of Torre’s player cards.

None of the cards are expensive or difficult to trade for, just an odd little obsession.

So I’m a little weird.

Bruce Bochte?

Bought a Bochy rookie recently, I think it was less than a dollar!

Clever choice of date for that show.

I finally got a card I've been looking at for a while. The 2022 Topps Heritage high number alternate photo red ink Mike Trout auto, with the Fenway photo. Couldn't do the blue ink after I saw the red, and as a bonus the Sox are in first on the scoreboard in the photo. Every picture I take of it is glare city, I think there's bene one posted before..

Pedro was just announced as signing at the National this year. He'll be there along with other Red Sox greats like Manny Ramirez, Rickey Henderson, and Bartolo Colon.

Wonder if the show organizer is counting on Manny not cashing the check. Although I'm sure what Manny is getting is peanuts compared to Rickey.

Edit: oh wow, major surprise to me. Rickey is really beloved by the hobby. Thanks, PIAB

Doubtful. Manny doesn’t sign nearly as much as Rickey. From past signings, I’m guessing the price per auto (minimum, will only go up based on item) for Manny is $350, Rickey $150, and Pedro $200.

I went to the show, it was packed! I only bought an '83 Lee Smith (for a friend) and some supplies. I went to try and sell my modern collection (with no luck). But it was all worth it to me because I got to see this: 80996

Sotheby's auctioned off NBA All-Star Game uniforms this week.

LeBron at $139,700. Then (between ($30K and $41K) Edwards, Curry, SGA and Doncic. Banchero, Giannis, Tatum, Lillard, Brunson all between 20-25K. Everyone else less...Jokic 16K, Brown 10K,...Abedayo 1397...

It can't be a coincidence that the winning bid for Abedayo was exactly 1% of the winning bid for James.

Just give it to me straight. I'm never going to find Upper Deck Series 2 hockey on retail shelves anywhere, ever, right?

Brutal. The collation blows unless it's a really small set. I saw 4 and 5 of some guys. The purple parallel was terribly mis-cut. Garbage.

So, my unpopular opinion, I really don't mind Onyx stuff in the unlicensed third party realm. This set looks rough - the cuts were off, the collation sucked (though honestly collation for Topps and Panini has kinda gone in the shitter too - just watch a handful of breaks and track the same players and teams repeatedly), but I'd still probably rather open Onyx Vintage than something like Topps Heritage where you can drop $100 for a bunch of base fodder, a meaningless relic, and some nonsense inserts.

I’m in Canada now and buying on eBay is so much harder. So I just ship them to my friend in Vegas and he handles them for the time being.

If anyone wants a really fun Sportscard read, someone found this gem on the Blowout Forums to accompany this eBay listing

RE: Bad Seller Alert - Lewis Garland Williams III (eBay: sportsfan85) - Blowout Cards Forums (blowoutforums.com)

2022 Topps Archives '53 Fan Favorites Premium Auto Mike Trout PSA 9 *COOL STORY* | eBay

He also upped the eBay price from $500, presumably so no one will buy it for now - and yes it's worth the whole read, it gets better as it goes
What a story. And what a scumbag that seller is. People like him suck.

You know...I give a lot of grace for most athletes who sign because it's kind of a thankless business for many players they're asked to sign a lot of things for very little. Brady is taking several thousand per item per person, he can do better than that.

I'm actually kind of thinking he didn't sign them at all. Brady's auto is a bit sloppy but it's out there and that scribble looks nothing like that and his normal auto doesn't seem like a high effort one.

After a handful of releases into 2024 baseball, I've stayed pretty strong in keeping out of the releases. Fanatics has pushed the price point to card quality ratio a bit too far out of whack. Flagship seems like a complete loser to me at this point (it's already hitting discounts at retail), Heritage is very Heritagey but at a higher price point, Big League was less fun than last year, and the higher end stuff is doing better at limiting the low-end junk hits (fewer Waldichuks) but is also consistently underperforming overall when considering cost.

Admitting that every other product also has these issues, I feel like the most fun product recently has actually been a Panini product, WWE Impeccable. Not at the original $1,000 price tag, but boxes are sitting around $600 right now and when you look at what $600 boxes in other sports or sportlike products are giving, I'm pretty happy with the what Impeccable is producing. I've been buying singles and doing some wrestler breaks and the sheer number of $100+ dollar cards that come from it as well as the overall production quality is really impressive. The downside is that they leaned heavily into redemptions - as Panini does when lawsuits are around - so there is a real chance that your "big hit" will never be seen*. Additionally given how long it took to come out we are missing a few of the bigger names you would want (CM Punk, Tiffany Stratton, and Jade Cargill autos would have been real nice to have as well as some of the recent NXT Standouts). With that said given that nearly every card in the product has some sort of market (maybe minus the occasional true junk auto), and you frequently see three-digit cards coming out of the product - even not in the final slot of the box (where the big hit is) or on the silver/gold bar cards - it feels more exciting than what we're getting elsewhere right now.

* Including a freaking Von Wagner redemption card, who just got released, in a product is a crime though - I'm having fun guessing which redemptions I'll never see. Von Wagner and Roman Reigns seem least likely to actually come back to me

I think we'll see a Brady auto scandal at some point. A friend of mine won a charity event item at the Pats Foundation dinner. Let's just say he spent well into the 5 figures, and it included an event for him and 10 guests,. each with a plus one. As part of that, the guests (myself included) received an autographed Brady jersey. So Brady had to sign a total of 10 jerseys. One of our friends, a couple years later, sent the jersey into PSA to get authenticated, spent hundreds for that, only to receive the jersey back saying the auto was not authentic.

Topps sent me an email letting me know they're sending me a free Topps Now! Tanner Houck from his "Maddux" game. Kinda cool.

Edit: Which means it'll be a small print run and that no one ordered it in the 1st place.

Was it really a MLB ump?

That's me (the guy who was scammed, not the umpire).

Edit to add: Yes, it's the MLB ump. And, yes, I raised the Buy It Now price to keep the listing active for a while, because I suspect Lew would love to buy the card for $500 to take the listing down, but he's probably not willing to go to $2727.27.

If it were me I might just bait the guy into buying it then send him the Vladdy Jr card. And by maybe I mean definitely.

That would be poetic, but I'm sticking to public shaming for now. The psychopathic eBay listing is what finally attracted attention: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseballcards/comments/1cbmk9l/which_one_of_you_ebay_psychopaths_is_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It's funny, because SOSH was the impetus in a roundabout way. I got back into card collecting after reading this thread in 2021, and that led to my goal of completing the 2022 Archives 53FF set, which I posted about when I was still looking for the Trout (see http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/sports-cards-mania.31230/post-5395316). I hadn't seen the Trout pop up anywhere else at that point and was excited to have finally tracked it down, so I wasn't thinking about the pitfalls of using F&F. I had previously bought the Ohtani from Umpire Lew through eBay without issue, so I foolishly thought that going outside eBay to save fees would be fine.

Everything that happened after that... well, I couldn't have scripted it if I tried.
