You may look at his age (26) and think he’s a meddling career minor leaguer, but he was only drafted in 2021.

Yikes. German was not going to be in the organization anymore one way or the other, but would have liked to have seen someone who was either younger than "turning 27 in July" or had at least pitched well at AA or above.....
Thanks for posting, I missed that he only has 2 years in the minors before I posted whining about it above. At least they have a ton of control on him and he doesn't need to be protected on the 40 man for a few years. If they can find a way to get him to stop walking people he could be interesting.
Listed by Baseball Prospectus as 6'3" 240 lbs. Interesting looking guy from the above article. So essentially for Barnes and German, both dfa'ed, they got Bleier and Denlinger plus a spot on the 40 man for Duvall. I think that's a pretty good return and good job by Bloom.
I was thinking the same thing. You get a major league pitcher and a live arm for guys you didn't want anyway? Sign me up!
Bleier was in AA for six years (!) and seems like a valuable arm now. Pitchers are weird. Or at least pitching is. Anyway, there is no one way to the top.
if nothing else, with Denlinger and Alfaro, we have a pair of linebacker-sized guys if there is a brawl.
I’m not worried about him aging out of the team. Not for what he cost and the control we get. If he turns 40 sooner than German does and both are still productive I will admit I was wrong.
Mondesi has always been a multi-tool player but has struggled to produce. Thus, it is the job of Cora and the rest of the coaching staff to help mold and define those tools. In this situation, they are figuratively blacksmiths.

This is a good example of how much / how little value depth prospects have, especially ones that need to be on the 40-man. German was a top 25 prospect for the Sox, and one of their better pitching prospects and this is the return.

I don't know if I'd define German as a "guy they didn't want." I'd imagine they'd prefer him to Denlinger if all else was equal.
But do to the 40-man crunch, all else was not equal. Getting a body (and an interesting one!) instead of nothing is good, though.

I'd like to know this too. Maybe it has really good break/movement but is very easy for hitters to pick up or identify out of his hand?
I would guess it's as simple as being good enough to get A-AA hitters out but will not lead to the same level of success at higher levels.

You're forgetting the favor that MLB did for the Yankees and other franchises facing a roster crunch last offseason when they cancelled the Rule V draft allowing New York and the teams in that position to clear out the margins of their 40 man rosters. The result is that this year no one had 40 man roster space (and hence why Rule V sucked this year). Things will return to normal in a year or two.

Could be velocity + spin rate + movement makes the pitch theoretically good but in practice, for whatever reason, it gets, errr, hammered.
