Will Mookie be traded before there's a winner in the Iowa Caucus?

Manny, Nomar, Thornton and Seguin are all also good calls. I said "top of the game" and I am not sure any of those players were exactly that
Thornton led the league in points the year he was traded and ended up the MVP. He was a former # 1 overall and had signed one of the largest annual value contracts in the NHL just that year. He was undoubtedly a top 10 player in the league at the time he was traded. Seguin may not have been at the "top of the game" but he had already scored 29 goals as a 19 YO and had signed a very manageable contract.

Tough to draw equivalencies across different sports, especially given the different economics, but Mankins was traded and retired just two years later (played 9 with the Pats). Seymour played only four more seasons after being traded (after 8 with the Pats). It's questionable given the percentage of their career was in Foxboro versus elsewhere that they were traded away in their midst of their primes...certainly not in comparison to baseball players like Lester or Betts who very well could end up playing more years outside of Boston than in it.
Maybe, but typically it's irrelevant what happens post trade, only that the evaluation at time of the trade was that these were prime caliber players. Mankins was just three years removed from signing a contract that made him the highest paid guard in the league. Seymour returned a first rounder, made the pro-bowl in the two years following the trade and signed the highest annual contract for a defensive player in 2011.

Fred Lynn's career is a good argument for trading Mookie now and maximizing the return, not to sign him to one of the top two or three most expensive contracts in baseball history.
Yep, which is why I mentioned him. The prevailing narrative with Lynn has always been "He'd have been a Hall of Famer if he'd stayed in Boston" -- but Lynn ended up getting injured a ton and his career highlight after leaving the Sox was hitting the first (and still only?) grand slam in the ASG.

Not that Mookie's been injured very much during his career, but Lynn is a cautionary tale for sure.

How many SoSH posters have Create Thread windows open with titles starting with something along the lines of "Betts traded to " ... in hopes of being the first to post the news?

Freddy Lynn was also afflicted with . . . intermittent motivation. Everyone knows what a great rookie year he had. But before the 1979 season Lynn worked out with the relatively new Nautilus machines and was stronger than ever. He had maybe his best season. He didn't bother to do it again before the 1980 season.

I'll take the over. Soxhop had his ready a few days ago because he started writing the title over a week ago.

2.5 is a really good O/U. We all know 1.

edit: And Dano mentioned him before I even hit the reply button.

Lynn's issues with durability were overstated IMO. Lynn played more than 1100 games and had more than 4400 PA after being traded from the Red Sox to the tune of 120 OPS+. He moved from Fenway to worse hitting environments but he still produced, the raw numbers were down but they were just as impressive given they were put up in Anaheim and Baltimore and Detroit. He was also traded for assets that never did a damn thing for the Sox, traded because Haywood Sullivan hated agents.

Lynn is about the worst example I can think of to make a case for trading a superstar in his prime. Trading him was immensely stupid and destructive to the team.

I bet the Hop has at least 3 open with different titles depending on the destination. So I'd definitely take the over.

Maybe throw Bill Ranford in there as well as an emerging player dealt by the B's.

In the spirit of the Iowa Caucus we should allow all of the threads to be opened and then take a vote.

And then the board will shut down for 24 hours while the Dopes pick the ultimate victor.

as anxious as i am to pour over the return and mock lineups/rotations and such, i find this fascinatingly different than any other mega deal the sox have been affiliated with in recent memory.

bloom is sitting back and not getting caught up in “pulling the trigger”. patiently putting the onus on the other 2 teams to sweat. super interesting strategy especially considering his familiarity w/ friedman. bloom is assuming on the 2 teams that he’s holding the cards tho we all know he has to make a trade to somewhere.

again, in my anticipation, i find this a very new and cool headed tragedy that i obviously hope bodes well for the future team on the fenway field.

Long gone are the days of Corsi and his desire to be the first to post...well, anything.
I realized he had a google news alert for Red Sox, and posted whatever came up. I think he was a place with a slow connection because I beat him by a few seconds a few in a row,. But it was not peasant way to spend my day, so I relinquished the leadoff spot after an inning or so.

I started bowling again this year after a 5-year hiatus and I hadn't seen Diana for a while, but I did I ran into Mookie's mother at the Tennessee State Bowling tournament on Saturday....I'm going to make some money BTW.....and the conversation went something like this: "Diana, you know I wore these Sox shirts a long time before I ever knew about Mookie, right?" and she said "well, you might have to wear a Dodgers shirt pretty soon".
I told her that I know she can't talk about everything, and probably wouldn't know anyways, but that I hated to see him go-- that we all love Mookie, but that I couldn't ever see the Sox paying $400 million to anyone, and then told her that she did a hell of a job raising her son....

I've tried to attach a pic, but even when I reduce it to a thumbnail I get an error msg......

Point taken. Thornton is a very good comp for Mookie. I think cognitive dissonance contributes to my assessment of him at the time of that trade. Thanks.

I’m in the camp that you don’t trade the second best player in baseball but I get all the other contributing factors (Mookie’s signability, reset the luxury tax, other bad contracts, lack of a reliable minor league pipeline)!

In the link above is the BR highest annual salaries. The AL is dominated by Arod and now and going forward Mike Trout! The NL trend is interesting though as it has slowly risen as expected annually. I don’t necessarily think the trend will continue to be linear especially with the uncertainty of next labor deal. But maybe the contract for the 2nd best player in baseball won’t be as ludicrous in the context of other contracts 9-10 years from now!

Both those trades along with the Hamilton trade led to me being a ~30-40 game a year Bruins watcher to 0. Why should I get invested if the team doesn't desire to keep elite talent?

But at least Hockey has a rigid salary cap.

I'm glad this seems to be cooling off. When it comes to the Dodgers I think you need to get Gray or Gonsolin + Downs. If the Dodgers say no, then just don't trade the second best player in baseball and take probably a top 5 roster talent-wise to the dance floor.

This is a 3rd place team without a manager that is risking losing Mookie Betts for nothing. The Dodgers deal wasn't great but it was better than a 4th rounder next year.

How are we interpreting “possible” here? Like it may or may not happen tonight? Awesome if true.

well the ESPN LA report made it seem like things were cooling off with just "possible". now these reports make it seem like we could hear it's gone through within the hour.
