Odds are he wasn't retiring a Red Sox. I'd be sicker if he left after the season with only a compensatory pick to show for it.
No disagreement from me at all; fully onboard that train. All I ask is that you give nola’s “emotional brain” some space for a moment. It needs time to mourn.

I wouldn't expect anything today with Super Bowl
Yeah, I don't think this is as big a deal as it once was. It's not as though we're talking two small markets filled with ambivalent sports fans.

More likely they'd have until about a half-hour before game time if they feel like the need the stage to themselves. And even then, I'm sure either team would care

I can understand that. Mourning is a very personal process, but for me the period is a short one when it comes to sports. A buddy of mine was frantic back in '04 when the Sox trailed in the ALCS 3 games to none. I hated the idea of being swept by the MFY, but as I told him, "If it happens it's gonna suck, but I still have to go to work tomorrow.". We know that played out differently, but the fact is the sun was still going to rise the next day just as it will if Mookie leaves. The only difference is that it rises three hours later in LA. ;)

I get what you're saying here, but I think/hope that having a division rival who seems seriously interested in Betts and has good young talent to give won't drive down the return of a Betts/Price package to LA too much. I'll take the fact that the deal hasn't been done yet as a sign of hope.
I've been thinking that IF there is fire behind this smoke THEN perhaps it's because they're mixing more ingredients into the soup. Maybe they're exploring adding in some unexpected pieces to even out the wrinkles. Maybe Benintendi or Bradley gets tossed in to see what pops up from the other side. Maybe Chavis. Who knows? But this is getting loonnggg..

If I had to guess, I'd say that perhaps there are three versions of trades possibilities with the Dodgers -- with the return on each dictated by what the Red Sox give u.

1. Mookie alone
2. Mookie and a subsidized Price
3. Mookie and Eovaldi

And they are probably working each out simultaneously to see where the fit is

If I may engage in some "my best friend's sister's boyfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl..." hearsay for a moment...

Have a friend who has worked with the Red Sox Foundation, MLB, the MLBPA, and the Boras organization. What he tells me he's heard is that Mookie enjoys Boston as a city, an organization, a ballpark and a passionate fan base... but really hates the weather and that's going to be a strong factor in what happens next.

Also am told Mookie would strongly prefer to be closer to his home in Nashville although, all things considered, Boston isn't THAT far a hike, certainly compared with the West Coast. And we can't forget how, on hitting free agency Roger Clemens said it was his priority to find a team closer to Texas than Boston, and he wound up in just about the only place that was further away.

Shit, I just might have compared Mookie to Roger Clemens. And I'm an Eli apologist. What the fuck is happening to me?

This doesn't change your point in any meaningful way, but I believe Toronto is close to Houston than Boston by a couple of hundred miles.

I dont think the Dodgers want anything but mookie, and on their terms. They already are the prohibitive favorites in the NL so they see themselves as having the upper hand in any negotiation, as we have already seen in the Lindor discussions.

Add to that the general perception that the Red Sox want to cut payroll, there really is no overriding pressure on the Dodgers to offer anything of real value. they will Take Mookie on their terms, but no more,

I don't see Henry and Werner caving to that. I just don't. Our best deal in my opinion is with the Padres, Especially with AJ Preller on somewhat of a hotseat to make the playoffs

Mookie should be told that with global warming coming at us like a freight train, Boston is the next Nashville, climate-wise.

I'm curious why the Cardinals aren't a realistic trade partner for Mookie. They have a pretty good farm system and a history of spending for the right players. I'd love to get CMart Hudson or Reyes. Plus they have an abundance of outfielders. On paper it makes a lot of sense.

I think the Cardinals have maxed out on their payroll for the year. I think there is some hope that Bader will turn it around and their top prospect is an OF.

Money. They didnt even sign one of their biggest run producers in Marcell Ozuna who got only 1 year 18M from atlanta, if they cant spend 18M on one of their own, they must blanch at the idea of 420 M to sign Mookie. They gave Goldschmidt 130M and that's less than 1/3 of what Mookie wants.

If Price has to be in there, I hope Joe Kelly is in the deal as well as (presumably) Pollock, provided it gets us a better package back.

Eh I don't think people are looking at Mookie as anything other than a rental. Martinez would offset some of the salary. But this is probably still true. For some reason I like the arms that the Cardinals have better than the ones the Dodgers and Padres are willing to part with.

I think that has to include Price and it’s gonna take me a very long time to digest if that’s a good trade. I think it probably is but man this trade is gonna get picked apart

The back of your computer
Ferguson was a starter who has transitioned to a relief role in the majors. His fastball-curveball combo is good enough for a high-leverage ceiling, but his command might limit him to middle relief. Currently, he's projected to start the season in AAA for LAD.

If I’m LA and Price is in the deal, I want Boston taking back Pollock and I’m keeping Verdugo, who’s younger, cheaper, better and hedges better against not signing Mookie long term. But then is Gonsolin enough of a headliner for the Sox? Probably, if they add Ruiz or Downs (roughly equal to Gonsolin in value?) and another high ceiling lower level prospect. As a Sox fan, I wouldn’t be thrilled with that deal, but it’s fair, saves a ton of cash, and gives us pieces to work with now and next year+.
Verdugo is a superfluous prospect as they still have OF prospects stacked up behind him. He’s literally exactly the guy you deal in these situations.

Mixed if this is the case. Sox taking nothing back in payroll which is a good thing, but would like to see one more MLB ready name in there. I'd be happy to see Ross Stripling somehow worked into this and perhaps Price fetches something in a separate deal.

Not sure where the Cards are money wise, but I wouldn't mind something involving Price and Carpenter. I really don't know how or why it might work given the dollars involved on both sides, but if Carpenter has anything left in the tank he can contribute right away and play 3 infield positions.

I think while you're at it, you might as well ask for the keys to Barad-Dur, the rods of the five wizards, the crowns of seven kings, and a pair of boots many sizes larger than those that you wear now.
The Dodgers would gladly give4 up all off that rather than Lux or May. Unfortunately Manfred has already outlawed the use of all those trinkets.

That package fucking sucks. I can't actually imagine taking this team seriously if the net effect is punting some short term money for Alex Verdugo.

I'm going to be beyond pissed if this team is trading Mookie for that. I'd much, much rather just risk the first round comp.

Please be wrong. Thats a worse package than the Snakes got for Goldy. Especially if Price is involved
Verdugo is a better player than anyone Arizona got for Goldy. And Downs is a legit high-floor prospect capable of filling either 2B or CF as early as late 2020, and we have no other good solutions for either position next year.

i would have liked a better pitcher as a third piece, but Ferguson is interesting. Has a bananas spin rate on his curveball, which fits Bloom’s pattern. Probably a reliever, but works within a creative rotation structure. Tempted to call him a Rich Man’s Jalen Beeks.

Ferguson is homer prone. Needs to develop a legit 3rd pitch to be a starter. I just am terrified to see him vs the Yankees. If this was Gonsolin then I'd be a lot happier.

I'd much rather roll the dice on Price/Sale/Eovaldi being healthy, the offense holding up their side of the bargain, and see if the Sox can be legit title contenders in 2020. If they're not, they can work the phones at the deadline to get under $208M and replenish the cupboard a little bit.

The incremental difference in return on this deal and what they could likely get in July isn't worth throwing away 2020. If this were Milwaukee or Kansas City, sure. Boston? Go for it and keep making legends.

I don't think the Sox can garner a 1st-round comp pick when Mookie departs.

Thanks to the increasing luxury tax penalty the compensation pick comes after the fourth, not the first. And Downs is going to be really good. Verdugo might just be a good RF, but when trading Mookie they do need to replace him.

What does Rob mean here? Is the "consensus deal" the one Peter Gammons tweeted? What about it is "unrealistic" and from whose side? Really weird tweet.
I would guess the hang up is the extra prospect(s) beyond Downs and Verdugo and the amount Boston has to send with Price (or perhaps LA is demanding they take back JK or AJP in the deal).

Not really and his sample size is too small to make such claims.
You can't discount his major league numbers completely. Besides if he is having these problems in the NL then he's not going to fare any better vs the lineups that the Jays and Yankees are putting together. Gonsolin has the higher floor for sure. But as someone else said Ferguson has a great spin rate on his curve so I guess that might come into play?

HR rate in majors 3.7%. Last year it was 3.4%. The ML rate is 3.3%.

So again, not really HR prone. You are probably looking at Per 9 stats and per 9 stats suck.

Caleb Ferguson had a 2.35 HR/9 in the first half of 2019 and a 0.42 HR/9 in the second.

I don't think you're missing anything. He's a good prospect. Currently rated as a 50 FV at Fangraphs, put together about a 140 wRC+ at A+/AA this year, probably hitting the majors in 2021. Will neatly fill our 2B hole when he's ready. Ferguson sounds a bit like a bargain-bin Drew Pomeranz.

I think the complaining about this trade seriously overestimates the value of a Mookie rental. Verdugo + Downs for Betts is a fair deal--if anything, it skews in the Sox' favor. Add Ferguson, even if he's nothing much, and the deal decidedly favors the Sox even before you add a fourth piece. There's no way Price is going as well, unless Friedman has lost his mind or Pollock is involved.
