Hmm, odd roster crunch coming with Mata but I guess they will see what happens before then with this guy.
With Mata being shut down again, this seems like a move to cover what they had hoped Mata to be. I'm not sure how excited we should get for a guy the White Sox decided to DFA. 16 innings this year to the tune of a 6.55 FIP isn't encouraging. I imagine they're hoping to work some of Bailey's magic on him, but I assume he's just going to be the human white flag mop-up guy and nothing more.

mlbtr: His final three seasons in Kansas City saw him post a 5.14 ERA with a 4.79 FIP before he was ultimately sidelined partway through the 2023 campaign by a shoulder issue before undergoing surgery to correct Thoracic Outlet Syndrome back in October.

B & B have done very well with some guys off the scrap heap, maybe this is another.

Might also be the pen is just a little thin after a few short outings, and they want a guy for a few days who can mop up a lot of innings if things go south without taxing the rest of the bullpen. Easy DFA material.

TOS guys don't typically make the best reclamation projects. Expectations set to zero.

Isaiah Campbell is almost healthy now too. Keller may be just around for a few days to have an extra arm for the O's series as mentioned above. Not that Campbell is a lock, but he seems on par with Kelly.

It's not so much that as it is the alternative to promoting a player from within to the forty man roster that you may not be ready to promote and then being faced with having to cut that player or another from the forty man when an injured player returns.
Sure, but that’s a consequence of the roster rules intended to limit pitchers on the roster, where they have to stay down a certain amount of time if you send them down.

Anderson threw 70 pitches Friday and Kelly 40 Saturday. They needed an arm if either Houck yesterday or Criswell today has a disaster start or the Sox are up 10. No need to screw around with minor leaguers they don't think are ready. Keller is the Zack Short of pitching.

I get what you're saying, but it's not pitcher specific. While there is a roster limit of 13 pitchers, the roster has been expanded from 25 to 26 which affords teams the opportunity to carry 13 pitchers without being forced to roll with anything less than a 4 man bench.
