He was hitting well in the minors for the Yankees until recently. I assume they let him go due to some sort of opt-out because he hadn't been called up. Presumably, he'll have a similar deal with the Sox. Fair insurance if Moreland gets hurt, but I don't see him getting to the big club in any other circumstance.

Yeah, it's insurance. Last year Moreland had to play with a broken toe, and it really hurt his production. Now they have a contingency -- since it seems Sam Travis can hit only in Fort Myers.

NY had 3 guys ahead of him at least plus Mike Ford so they let him go when Bird was ready to come back.

He's OF insurance, too. Like if JBJ remains cold, you have the option of playing both Lind and Moreland with JD in the outfield. It's the Hanley role. The bench doesn't really have a power threat anymore, so it seems like a reasonable flier.

Lind vs RHP:
2017: .303/.364/.534 (269 PA)
2016: .239/.287/.442 (376 PA)
2015: .291/.380/.503 (460 PA)

Great organizational depth grab imo.

Swihart or Travis were not going to be rational answers in the event Moreland got hurt or we ended up wanting/needing to plug somebody in at DH for an extended spell down the line.

He has gotten better with age too: Since 2013
Adam Lind - .282/.348/.473 and wRC+122
Compared to Mitch over that time
Moreland - .251/.317/.419 and wRC+ 101

And randomly - Hanley's line since it's right below Lind's and nearly identical.
Hanley Ramirez - .275/.344/.474 and wRC+121

Not surprising... especially after acquiring Steve Pearce.

Final line for Lind with the PawSox: .216/.270/.383 with seven doubles and seven dingers.
