So Felix really is the long man for now.
Now if we can just jettison Peavy so both the kids can be in the rotation...joyousness.

Not wholly unexpected.  He's been a marked man basically since he was signed...seventh man in the pen on a contract that didn't have options.  It probably would have happened sooner if he hadn't pitched as well as he did early on.  But 4 IP in 5 outings this month, to the tune of a 22.50 ERA, spelled the end.

Odds are the start he had to the season will make him appealing to someone, so maybe a deal will get worked out for some one of potential use.  Worst case scenario would be that he accepts an assignment to Pawtucket and he's still around if need for him arises...which isn't all that bad.

I do take it as a good sign that the front office is ready to start using the kids.  Peavy may be next.

I'm down for this, but I don't think it will be RDLR - 85.2 IP so far in 2014 as compared to 91.2 IP last year. I bet he'll be used out of the bullpen for the second half, or shut down early.

I'll be interested to see who's next up though, assuming Peavy is out - Lester, Lackey, Workman, Buchholz, ?

On a side note, may I say that I admire how Red schooled soxhop on sneaking the thread in first by not using the words "Red" or "Chris."

Well done, sir

Seconded... though I am a little worried about pushing too many innings on RDLR.

I think this would only matter if we make an amazing comeback in the division.  As things stand now if he reaches too many innings in September they can just shut him down.

At the rate he's going, he may reach the "too many innings" threshold in mid-July.  I have a feeling he's a second half bullpen arm no matter how well he's throwing in the rotation.

But the silver lining in that is that there are at least two, arguably 3-4 guys in Pawtucket (not to mention Doubront) who can also be elevated into the rotation in place of Peavy.  It doesn't fall solely on RDLR should Peavy be moved.

Yup.

Wright is making a case for a shot the last few weeks.

The wrong side of the bridge....
I think it might be time they gave Webster another shot. Over his last 5 starts, he's given up 11 runs (10 earned) in 31.1 innings, with 29 K's, 10 walks and just 1 HR allowed in that stretch. That's not eye-opening, but it's solid. He's only gotten really knocked around once over his past 10 starts.

Ranaudo's doing well, too, but his K/BB numbers are a little funkier than Webster's--he's been doing it by preventing base hits at a probably unsustainable rate (.176 BA allowed over his last 60 innings). But he might be worth a flyer as well.

What the heck. Let's party like it's 2017.

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. Trade Peavy for whatever, pitch RDLR until you run into his innings cap (maybe 8 more starts) and then promote whoever is pitching the best in Pawtucket or who you want to get a good look at (Ranaudo?). If there is an injury to someone else, you can move Doubront back to the rotation, or promote a second player from Pawtucket.

I was hoping they'd have traded Capuano several weeks ago, when he was putting up good numbers. Still a good move dumping him, but they get nothing for him now. Oh well.

This isn't true.  At least not yet.  When they DFA a player, they have up to 10 days to find a trade partner and/or pass him through waivers.  If he clears, he can be assigned to the minors where he can still be traded away if the opportunity presents itself.  Of course, if someone claims him on waivers, the Sox at least get out from under whatever he is still owed.  It isn't much, but any savings is still savings.

Capuano won't be out of work for long. As with Sizemore, expect Cherington to release him, allowing him to-resign quickly

He has more than enough service time to decline a minor league assignment and become a free agent, which is moot anyway since they'll just release him.
