I liked the idea of doing it every few years to give our teams time to grow.

(but it's such an awesome winter activity that I wouldn't pass up doing it again)

First off, looks like I missed the final pick of the draft. Didn't realize that, and it would have been a 6th starter. Bummer. I ended up coming out roughly 200 IP short of enough innings, which a decent 6th starter would have given me.

Second, The cumulative numbers above are averaged and not weighted. I'm not smart enough to weight them, so Bumgarner's 2.77 ERA over 201 innings is equal to Brad Lincoln's 3.98 ERA over 31 innings. I'm not smart.

With that being said, I'm very happy with the way my pitching staff turned out. As a staff my team would rank:

9th in K/9
18th in BB/9
9th in HR/9
8th in ERA
10th in FIP
13th in xFIP
16th in WAR

The WAR is cumulative so not much would change if my stats were weighted, but my other stats would easily jump top 5 across the board with weighted numbers. My top 4 starters - Bumgarner, Chacin, Samardzija, Nova - all performed well/very well throughout the season and would have been quite a formidable group.

Blanton is a fat choad, but at least he gave me 133 shitty innings.

Romo/Johnson/Dunn would have been a borderline great 7-8-9. With 3 of my 5 starters giving 200 quality innings in a season, this pitching staff would have been awesome.

Again, pretty psyched with the way this group turned out.

I'm not going to look at my overall stats before I post my thoughts. We'll learn how good/bad my lineup is together.

My first thought? Holy shit is this lineup pathetic. Let's look at the numbers. Again, they aren't weighted because I'm dumb.

7th in BB% - Good start. Team full of grinders like the Sox. Clearly on my way to the World Series.
7th in K% - My team doesn't strike out much either. I take it back, this team actually can grind down some at bats.
18th in ISO - League average power. I guess I'm OK with that.
28th in AVG - Impressive. Or not.
22nd in OBP - Well, I can grind down at bats, but don't end up on base. A team full of Justin Smoak's. Great.
28th on SLG - Can't get hits, can't get on base, can't hit homeruns. Overall, a pretty potent lineup.
23rd in wRC+ - Just fucking kill me.
17th in DEF - Roughly league average, but positions vary wildly. Fantastic CF, shitty 3B, etc. Rough.
21st in WAR - Bottom third of the league.

Overall, my guys can grind down at bats and have good enough defense to save some runs. Neither attribute is enough to make up for a lineup full of noodle bats. I expected a decline from Teixeira, but didn't expect him to be useless. Ditto for Hamilton. Encarnacion hit as well as I could have hoped for.

If Hamilton/Teixeira were able to perform even slightly less than their average, a 2-3-4-5 of:

Neil Walker
Josh Hamilton
Edwin Encarnacion
Mark Teixeira

Would have been solid, and certainly would have been enough to compete with the fantastic rotation/bullpen I have.

Unfortunately, Hamlton/Teixeira were dogpoop, and they submarined what could have been a very good year.

I'd be more than happy to run it again unless someone else wants to pick up the ball and run with it. Is there a consensus that people want to do another draft?

Why don't we start another sign up thread? See if there's enough people to run it again. Scoops did a great job handling everything last time, I think he should keep it this time too.

I'm in. Although it would seem if we're going to be doing this on a yearly basis, as opposed to for a long-term thing, we probably should just have some sort of scoring system in place/do it like a regular fantasy Baseball thing.

There are plenty of other places to play fantasy; this is primarily (to me) an excuse to debate real-world player valuation and team construction independent of an arbitrary scoring system.

It's not so much that I want everything to be fantasy/measurable, but that, if we're doing this every year, while you can still do "team-building," for people who had drafted prospects who still might be a couple of years off, it makes doing that kind of pointless/still left as hypothetical.

Although a SoSH 30 team fantasy keeper league would be pretty epic. :)

What I learned from this exercise:

Bad:
Drafting Ryan Howard, especially in the 7th round, was a horrible idea.
My bench was too thin/not deep enough to cover lineup issues
Relief pitching is a waste

Good:
I got basically a full season out of my rotation (full seasons from 4 out of 5, and enough starts out of the bullpen to cover the missing half of the 5th)
I'm happy about the performance I got out of my rotation as well
Drafting 10 Justin Maxwells certainly helped

Ultimately:
I had Pedro Martinez, and no one else did.

This is what my team looks like right now:

C: Joe Mauer
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Omar Infante
SS: Asdrubal Cabrera
3B: Alberto Callaspo
LF: Carl Crawford
RF: Shane Victorino
CF: Curtis Granderson
DH: Victor Martinez

1: Justin Verlander
2: Gio Gonzalez
3: Jered Weaver
4: Hector Santiago
5: Eric Stultz

CL: Jonathan Papelbon
RP1: Rafael Soriano
RP2: Brad Ziegler
Long/6th starter: Paul Maholm
Currently on DL, eventual Long/6th starter: Gavin Floyd

Bench:
Backup C: Carlos Ruiz
3B/1B/DH: Mark Reynolds
SS/2B/3B: Daniel Descalso
CF/LF/RF/2B (and, in a pinch, SS and 3B too) : Emilio Bonifacio

Awesome: Pedro Martinez

Overall, I have bench players who can cover every single position if needed (either due to injury or giving people time off), Ruiz can work through with Mauer and Pujols to give Mauer some time at 1st and DH and Pujols some time off, I can rotate people through positions, have a couple of guys in my bullpen easily capable of stepping into the rotation if needed, and some good guys for the 8th and 9th innings.

And, I have Pedro Martinez
I think you have the wrong year.
