Honestly, for the sims at least, I was just going to turn off injuries. For starters I think the Show injures players way too frequently but also, it won't end up helping the results IMO. The sims, in my mind, are about the best cases scenarios (or as close as possible, there is always the risk of a player not developing A status or no) and turning off injuries gets us closer to that. (EDIT: Also they won't mimic real life injuries so I see no point in keeping them on)

In reality, when we come back and look at the results in whatever amount of years we choose, injuries will obviously factor in, it's just a part of baseball.

Yeah, I'm fine with not getting any production out of Santana if he never starts again. I mean, part of the reason he was a risk to draft was because of his injury history, and the likelihood of it recurring. I mean, if we could have just assumed "typical for him" production from him in his "healthy" state, I think he would have gone pretty early. But part of the reason he didn't is because, while he's still relatively younger, he's obviously an injury risk, and I knew that when picking him. Sucks that I didn't end up getting anything out of him (although who knows, maybe he'll come back again), but such is life.

Thanks MakMan, I knew I could count on you.
And my army of Justin Maxwells will also live in infamy.
And this why you don't about injures.

Oh Santana is hurt? Justin Maxwell will pitch.
Howard tears his ALC? Maxwell to first base.
Hanley's out for a few weeks? Maxwell can play SS
IT'S BULLSHIT TERRI. I won't stand for it!

Being someone who can benefit from us using magical healing powers, I'm going to have to... well, vote against it.  I knew Marcum was an injury risk when I took him.  And freak injuries happen.  It's part of the game.  Of course you/I/we wouldn't have drafted someone if we knew their shoulder was going to blow out or a fastball in on the hands was going to break a wrist or whatever.  That's besides the point, IMO.

I would just counter by asking why injuries from, say, February to April should matter but ones after April shouldn't. I would figure if this is being imported into something like OOTP or the Show as a for-fun thing, it would happen as a parallel exercise not dependent on real-life for anything.

Now for the five year retrospective? Well, yep, gotta consider it there.

I'm probably the person who will be hurt most by injuries, I knew Beachy and Wieland would miss up to half the season, and Cooper went from might miss part or all of spring training to will likely miss 2013 plus after I drafted him. However I am fine with having the injuries that have happened up to this point included if we choose to sim this with a videogame.
Of course I built my team on a long-term 5-10 year kind of plan anyway, so I expected this year to be a wash between injuries and an insanely young roster.

I really would love on the side to make this a fantasy baseball dynasty league. I don't have the time to set it up, but if someone did I would participate.

So, if we're skipping A34 for now I guess, and Eck PMed Farvin this morning, Farvin had said in his last post that he was moving between then and Monday, and if his turn came up and he hadn't picked within 6 hours to just skip him and he would post when he had a chance. He was on a bit ago, but is off again now. So, should I just go I guess? I'm in no rush, especially with this I guess being the last round, and I don't think I'm going to be taking anyone's pick with my pick anyway, just don't want things to get held up on account of me.

Also, I will be traveling Thurs-Mon so I will look when I can but feel free to go past me if it gets past a few (call it 6) hours and you havent heard from me.  I will make the pick when I get back if that happens.
I'd say Terri is good to go.

Well, at this point in the draft, 25th pick, we're either adding to the back end of our bullpen, or getting some backup position players or something. My bullpen's pretty well taken care of, so that's good. On the other hand, my armies of Justin Maxwells aside, I probably could use another backup position player. But, hey, I have someone who can back up at the three outfield spots, and then two guys who can back up most anywhere in the infield aside from catcher. So, at this point I suppose the most logical thing to do would be to pick a backup catcher. But, hey, there's been something I've kind of been wanting to do from the start of this.

The rules, as stated in the original post, say that in order to be eligable, a player has to have had at least one batter faced or one plate appearance prior to the end of the 2012 season. We've had various discussions about players who have gotten injured, or who have gone off to play in Japan, or are in the minors, or who have retired but might not have if given a shot by our team and such. And, I know at one point in this draft, someone had picked someone (I forget who) who had retired a while ago, and we all had decided that was fine if that's who he really wanted. He ended up saying it wasn't though, and he wanted someone else, and we all decided that was an alright reason to pick again. Nonetheless though.

The player I'm picking I think could probably still be better than some of the guys filling out the back ends of bullpens and rotations and such. But, I'm fine with not necessarily getting any actual stats out of him - after all, if we take real injuries into account, that's probably about what I'm going to end up getting out of Santana. And, at this point in the draft, to be able to pick someone who, for so many years, I would have taken with my first pick, and to be able to have him on my team... Well, as I said, between that and a backup catcher, I don't think it's too big a loss. And, hey, if nothing else, him and Santana can sit on the bench and reminisce about good times, and talk to my other pitchers about what it's like to be awesome.

I've only been following Baseball for 20 years, but, I have never seen another player like him, and I'm not sure we will ever seen anyone else quite like my last pick:

Terri, honestly man, that was a fantastic write up. I couldn't agree more that we're likely to never see another like him.

But..... the guys been retired for 4 years. I like the Jordan's furniture commercial too, but this isn't feasible. At all.

Oh, no argument there that he's retired, and getting stats out of him isn't feasible.
But then, I drafted Santana hoping to get some stats out of him, and that might well not be feasible either.

As I said, if I was going with someone who was still active, I guess I would have gone with a backup catcher, since that's the only thing I was really missing.
Still, hey, so I'm short a backup catcher, but I get to have Pedro Martinez around. I still like it.

It's cool Terri, you can have like a quarter of Rubby's stats because Pedro's going help him become AWESOME.

Fuck you all.  I'm changing my last pick to Doug Mirabelli.

What's sad is that he might actually be able to put up a better slash line than Wilson.  And Sumner, I'm kidding.  Don't add SWHB to my roster.

I guess it's my turn.

I was gonna go with Nate Freiman because the guy has raked in the minors and I need a power bat off my bench, but then I realized the only at bats he has are this year so he is not eligible.

Instead, I am going to go with 34 year old Mike Hessman, 1B, Cincinatti Reds (sort of).  I don't know why this guy hasn't been able to put it together in the bigs, probably because he can't make contact with a baseball to save his life.  I mean, 136 strikeouts in 492 plate appearances?  Some pitchers don't have as many K/9 as this guy does.  He didn't play anywhere in 2011, and I don't know if he is going to play anywhere this year let alone for the next five, but the dude has 377 home runs in his career, both majors and minors.  It's like he uses an aluminum bat or something, like 35% of the time he gets a hit, it's a home run.  So, when I'm in the bottom of the 13th of game 7 of the World Series, down by 3 with two outs and the bases loaded.... this is the dude I am sending to the plate because either way, I'm going the F home.

I'm probably one of the few people on this board who'd see Mike Hessman's name and know exactly who he is...and I've got to say, there are far better options than him available, even at 1B, and I'm more than a little shocked he got picked. The guy was a decent AAA weapon for a few years...but the Tigers thought so poorly of him, they let him go in favor of Ryan Strieby (who remains to this day my favorite "non-prospect who could've been great if not for injuries"). Hessman is a butcher in the field, and a hacker at the plate...he's not even a real AAAA player, because his domination of AAA really varied from year to year.

Nonetheless, I'm just happy to see his name again. He'll get his MLB pension and healthcare for the rest of his life, and worst case scenario he can go mash in Japan or Taiwan for another 4-5 years. There are worse ways to go through life.

With their final pick, Wade Boggs' Cowboy Boots will take the final member of its pitching staff. A right handed complement to Will Smith as a guy who can eat a bunch of middle and garbage innings, as well as be the occasional ROOGY to Smith's LOOGY, he's also a bit of a groundball machine which the pen has somewhat lacked thus far. Wade Boggs' Cowboy Boots are proud to round out their roster with...

I guess I'll do one of these lineup posts too. Platoons ended up being pretty central to my roster construction, so I'll post both the vs. LHP and vs. RHP lineups.

vs. RHP

1. Jurickson Profar, SS (S)
2. Matt Carpenter, 2B (L)
3. Ryan Braun, LF (R)
4. Eric Chavez, 3B (L)
5. Mark Reynolds, DH (R)
6. Nate Schierholtz (L)
7. Salvador Perez, C (R)
8. Mike Carp, 1B (L)
9. Cameron Maybin, CF (R)

vs. LHP (I know Forsythe's out for like 2 months, I'd probably replace him with Mike Carp or someone)

1. Profar (S)
2. Carpenter, 3B (L)
3. Braun, LF (R)
4. Reynolds, 1B (R)
5. Perez, C (R)
6. Logan Forsythe, DH (R)
7. Casper Wells, RF (R)
8. Scott Sizemore, 2B (R)
9. Maybin, CF (R)

Additional bench players: Jake Elmore (MI/PR), Dioner Navarro (C)

Also seems worth noting that I'd limit Chavez's PA's to 300-400 by liberally using Sizemore against RHP, and that Wells can handle all four OF positions.

Ideal Opening Day Rotation
1. R.A. Dickey (R)
2. Cory Luebke (L)
3. Trevor Rosenthal (R)
4. Julio Teheran (R)
5. Chris Tillman (R)

Bullpen:

Long man/sixth starter: Nate Eovaldi (R)
Middle relief: Jordan Lyles (R), Scott Kazmir (L)
Closer/set-up (matchup-based): Brad Peacock (R), George Kontos (R), Paco Rodriguez (L)

Luebke, Eovaldi and Kazmir are all on the DL to start the season, so I'd bump Lyles into the fifth starter slot.

I might write something a little more lengthy and in-depth about this team over the next few days, but I'll be short for now. The pitching looks really dreadful. Some of these young guys could end up amounting to something, but beyond R.A. Dickey there is nothing remotely close to a healthy, established MLB starting pitcher on the roster. I'm much happier with the lineup. I might be extrapolating too much from career platoon splits (and hoping for way too much from Eric Chavez), but I actually think it could be pretty good. I feel like I probably should have either committed to youth or veterans during the first few rounds though. A lot of my team's success will hinge on whether Jurickson Profar, Salvador Perez and Cameron Maybin can blossom quickly enough to be valuable contributors while Dickey and Braun are still in their prime. Of course, all of this will be moot if the rest of my pitching sucks. My biggest regret might be passing up Oscar Taveras in favor of R.A. Dickey and Cameron Maybin, but given my team's huge slant toward 25-and-under guys it might be for the best that I went with a couple of players who are a little bit more established.

Roster Breakdown for the Granite State Thunderbird Destroyers

Lineup
1. Starling Marte LF
2. Gordon Beckham 2B
3. Will Middlebrooks 3B
4. Adrian Gonzalez 1B *
5. Tyler Flowers C
6. Carlos Gomez CF
7. Brett Jackson RF *
8. Jose Iglesias SS

Bench
1. Yan Gomes (C, 1B, 3B)
2. Logan Schafer (OF) *
3. Henry Rodriguez (2B, SS, 3B) **
4. Eury Perez (OF)
5. Hernan Perez (2B, SS, 3B)

In picking my position players I wanted to field a young team with a ton of potential upside, speed in the OF and great defense. I got exactly that. Other than Adrian my lineup consists of mainly guys who are under 27 and are just now coming into their prime. I don't exactly have a "big bat" in the lineup but my 3-5 (WMB, Gonzalez and Flowers) will give me 25+ HR's a year while everyone other than Iggy is likely to put up somwhere between the mid teens and early 20's. I don't have elite power but I feel like I have enough spread out to put up some runs. I have a few guys who've had K problems in the past but they're still young and I feel that if they learn a little discipline this offense has some potential. Defensively everyone is above average or better, which was something I tried hard to consider with every pick, maybe giving up a little offense to get the better fielder. Other than my 4-5 hitters I have some speed and good baserunning ability so my hope is to be fairly aggresive on the basepaths as well.

I feel like my bench mirrors my lineup well. I went with guys who were good fielders and contact hitters who could play multiple positions well without much dropoff in production defensively or offensively, again not a lot of power there but a couple of those guys (Eury and Hernan) are really young and might blossom into something more than just speed/contact guys. I went with a NL lineup because I feel like I built a team that's on par with what the recent NL champions have put out there. Facing AL teams I would likely slot my DH, either Gomes or Schafer, at 6th in lineup and move everyone down. The only other negative is my lack of lefties. I have two in the everyday lineup and one lefty and one switch hitter on the bench. I feel like most of the decent lefties were picked fast in this draft. Other than being RHH heavy I really like the way my lineup turned out.

Starting Rotation
1. Stephen Strasburg
2. Trevor Bauer
3. Rick Porcello
4. Kyle McPherson
5. Justin Grimm

DL: Danny Duffy * TJ

My rotation has some inexperience but I like it's upside. This group is very young ranging from 22- 25 years old. Everyone throws hard, no one averages under 93, and most of them have shown decent control and high K rates. Strasburg is stud #1 Ace, and I'm hoping Bauer can get his shit together an be a solid #2. Unfortunately my hard throwing lefty in Duffy is on the DL until midway through the year or else he'd be slotted in at #3. He's another one who I think has #2 potential. Porcello, I think can be an innings eater and he's still pretty young even though it seems like he's been pitching forever, and will make a solid #4. McPherson has some incredible stuff and has the potential to be a #3 so I'll gladly slot him as my #5. Grimm is my #6, he's put up fantastic numbers in the minors showing great control, but in his small stints in the majors it just hasn't translated yet. Unforunately I have to throw him into the fire early due to Duffy's injury.

Bullpen
1. Craig Kimbrel CL
2. Kelvin Herrera SU
3. Jonny Venters SU *
4. Cody Allen SU/MR
5. Justin Wilson MR/LR *
6. Maikel Cleto MR/LR

I love this bullpen. Everyone is in the upper 90's and they all have filthy secondary pitches. Kimbrel is the best closer in the league and is worth more wins by himself than some peoples entire bullpens. Herrera and Venters could both set up or close and I'm not afraid to put either one out their regardless of the handedness of the hitter, Herrera also has the ability to go for more than just an inning. Allen is an up and comer who could also close if I needed him to but will likely be my 6th or 7th inning guy. Justin Wilson is an intriguing prospect who can be my LOOGY or my long man out of the pen. Cleto is a wild card. I could probably get a couple of innings out of him but most likely I'd only use him for one because I wouldn't want him to hold back considering he can hit triple digits. I think this is the strength of my team. Coupled with a great defense this team is going to be hard to score runs against.

I could see this easily being a 88-89 win team in it's first year with the possibilty for much more.

Hard to really care that much about the last pick, I was between taking my seventh pitcher or a fifth bench bat. Since we have a DH, I figure my need for pinch hitting would be smaller and the need for an additional arm is more prevalent, so I'm going pitcher here.

A lot of my pen have some specific niches they are best in. A couple LOOGY types, a ROOGY or two in there, some other question marks, and there's no saying how well my Alvarez to RP experiment might work out down the line. Plus, with all my Canadians, we really need some more jerks on the team. He pitches equally well (badly) against lefties and righties. He can start in a pinch (my staff won't all stay healthy), he can play most roles in relief, and he seems like his utility and ability to absorb the bad innings would have a solid role on a real life roster. So here goes nothing

With the last spot, I considered a number of guys:

1) A catcher who while no star doesn't appear to have any business still being available.  I almost took this guy instead of Soto many rounds ago, and he made me seriously consider snagging a 3rd catcher.

2) A former Rookie of the Year turned flub who would be an extra OF and the only repeat Blumpkin from the previous draft

3) Luscious Taters

In the end, I decided to add an extra power arm to the bullpen.

The Blumpkin All-Stars select Frank Francisco, RP

As my closer or primary setup guy, he'd scare the shit out of me.  But lower down the pecking order, he's a guy who can still strike out a shit-ton of dudes.  And he won't tolerate any shit in the bullpen, which helps keep my other, more important, relievers focused.

Terrisus, you maxed out the chart on RP.  Rather than add another column that's mostly empty, Pedro's listed as a BP (which is technically what your post said); obviously he'll mainly be a bench pitcher--we've all seen him try to bat.
