I don't have any real interest in a minor league drafts. To be honest, it would just be me going to Keith Law's Top 100, finding someone who fits my team profile, and then when those guys are gone just winging it.

I do like the OOTP/Show ideas though. I'll be interested to see how it goes.

Andres Torres, BP

Still handles lefties quite well and provides solid OF D. Could do a hell of a lot worse with my last pick.

MLB the show?

I've been planning to do this with OOTP 14 once it's out in a week.
OOTP might handle this type of thing better actually but I'll run through the show as well

I think he's been on my board for about 12 rounds now. I was between him and Bourgeois and even then I would have been thrilled with Torres. At this point an absolute steal.

Dylan Axelrod, Innings.

He's kind of a goofy looking motherfucker, ain't he? Well, he better be durable cause he's pitching in the 4th and 5th spots in my rotation, plus as the long man in the pen.

EDIT: BC100Y has mail.

Yeah, I've been looking at him forever and kept going in different directions but had my eye on him the whole time. Thrilled to get him here. Actually, Pettitte and Torres were probably my two easiest picks in the entire draft. Value and roster needs lined up perfectly and I didn't feel any need to dig too deep on possible alternatives.

My pick that I missed - I'm recalling Peter Moylan from the Dodgers triple a system and putting him in my pen. Three Aussies.

Also I hired Craig Shipley as my GM.

With my final pick I will round out my bullpen to grab who I think will be a solid middle relief guy.  He broke out last year with 2.06 ERA, an 8.23 K/9 and a 2.31 BB/9.  I don't think he's that good, mainly because he's an ultra fly ball pitcher that only posted a 6.1% HR/FB ratio last year.  His 4.18xFIP is probably a better indicator of his ability.  He's young, and I like the low walk rate.  He always had low walk rates in the minors so I think that at least his control is for real.  The last thing I need my relief pitchers doing is walking batters.  The Scuba Squad selects:

Casey Fien, Bullpen

Master Batters select Chris Gimenez, bench

If you're not one of the first guys picking a backup catcher, you might as well be last. They all pretty much suck except for David Ross. So, I'm taking a 30 yr old AAAA type, who hit like a replacement level catcher for Tampa in an emergency role last year before going back to Durham where he hit like vintage Jason Varitek. He continued to hit well this spring, but was sent down because he had options and Lobaton didn't. He's versatile (like a lot of my bench players) and looking at the minor league numbers, it seems like he can hit a little, he just hasn't been able to put it together in 300 big league ABs spread across 4 years.

Done.

Andrew (Scoops?), JGray, and Czar still have holes in their starting lineups (All at DH).

Lineup (Ideal):
1. Denard Span (CF)*
2. Asdrubal Cabrera (SS)^
3. Miguel Cabrera (3b)
4. Justin Morneau (1b)*
5. Nelson Cruz (RF)
6. Alex Rodriguez (DH)
7. Chris Davis (LF)
8.Devin Mesoraco (C)
9. Dustin Ackley (2b)*
Bench: Austin Romine (C), Sean Rodriguez (INF), Julio Borbon (OF), Juan Pierre (PH)

Lineup (2013 Opening Day):
1. Denard Span (CF)*
2. Dustin Ackley (2b)*
3. Asdrubal Cabrera (SS)^
4. Miguel Cabrera (3b)
5. Justin Morneau (1b)*
6. Nelson Cruz (RF)
7. Chris Davis (DH)
8. Devin Mesoraco (C)
9. Juan Pierre (LF)*
Bench: Alex Rodriguez (DH), Julio Borbon (OF), Sean Rodriguez (INF), Austin Romine (C)

Optimistically, I only completely blew it at one position, catcher. I intended to pair Mesoraco with a decent partner but it just got away from me and then I picked the shitty Yankee catcher who didn't make the roster. If I get anything from this position, it will be a surprise.

Miguel Cabrera should keep this team offensively competent; he's that good a hitter. If Morneau has a few years left, if Cruz wasn't a BioGenesis mirage, if Davis can make consistent contact and if Alex Rodriguez isn't completely and utterly washed up...this could be an interesting and productive group. For a few years. If all those guys are out of baseball in five years it would not be a huge shock.

Juan Pierre might never retire - he bought a necklace from Julio Franco when Franco retired at 48 (!) and seems not to age. Borbon should bounce around baseball because of his speed and glove...his bat sucks. Sean Rodriguez figures to play more than a typical middle infielder while in Tampa and he'll play a ton for this team as the primary back up everywhere in the infield (Miggy moving to 1b whenever Morneau sits).

Denard Span, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Dustin Ackley. If this team is going to be any good, they all need to get on base in front of Miggy and they all need to play great defense.

Overall, this team could be good offensively for 3 years and no more than 5, but most likely none.

Pitching (Ideal):
1. Matt Moore*
2. Michael Pineda
3. Martin Perez*
4. Jake Odorizzi
5. Ricky Romero
LR/SS: Dylan Axelrod
LR/SS: Josh Collmenter
LR/SS: Travis Wood*

SU: Mitchell Boggs
SU: Chris Perez
SU: Boone Logan*
SU: Edward Mujica

Pitching (2013 Opening Day):
1. Matt Moore*
2. Josh Collmenter
3. Travis Wood*
4. Dylan Axelrod

SU: Mitchell Boggs
SU: Chris Perez
SU: Boone Logan*
SU: Edward Mujica
Disabled List: Michael Pineda, Martin Perez
Minors: Ricky Romero, Jake Odorizzi

That Ideal Pitching scenario is pretty heavy on the ideal, huh? Ricky Romero was a TERRIBLE pick, quite possibly the worst pick in the whole draft. Brian Cashman believes in Pineda; frankly, if the Yankee never pitches again, I'll have "won" something as a Red Sox fan. If he recovers completely and becomes a monster, I will be a genius for taking him when I did. And even if that does happen, I will still have Ricky Romero on my resume.

Matt Moore is as good a bet as any other young starter to become an ace; all the signs are there for him to really blossom this year. Martin Perez's injury isn't a recurring one and he looks like a very good prospect developed by a team that develops very good prospects properly. Jake Odorizzi is serving his Tampa Timeout for arb control and looks to be a guy with some upside. And we're back to Romero. Fuck.

The swingmen - Collmenter, Wood and Axelrod - all have varying chances of becoming more than swingmen. And by varying chances I mean they're more than likely to end up swingmen. But OK swingmen. I'd probably prefer to use Collmenter to replace Romero permanently (god, he sucks) as having Wood's left arm in the bullpen has some marginal matchup value. Axelrod just eats innings until his arm falls off.

I like the four true RP I've got; Perez is wild and crazy, Mujica is steady, Boggs has a beard and Boone's the lefty. As a manager, I'd ride the hot hand with respect to key leverage spots - using any of them to snuff out a fire if they were going well and the matchup was good. I'd give the 3-run "saves" to whoever leads the clubhouse in hot feet given.

Overall, I really regret two picks: Romero & Romine. The heft of the offense is all going grey but the middle of the field is good defensively and possibly not at their ceiling offensively and Miggy makes up for lots of other deficiencies. The pitching might be very good or it might be an utter disaster. Oh, and Arod. Clubhouse cancer.

Can we start over?

With their last pick the Thunderbird Destroyers select Maikel Cleto RP

This 6'3" 240 lb Big Papi clone doesn't hit HR's but he throws hard. Triple digit hard. Unfortunately he has no clue where the balls going most of the time. The soon to be 24 year old already has 5 years of minor league experience, spending the first 4 being conditioned as a starter, so I could possibly get more than one inning out of him if I needed it. He was considered a top prospect in the Mets organization when he was signed. He was traded to Seattle where he was also considered a top prospect. Finally traded again to St. Louis where, you guessed it, he was considered a top prospect. The shine has come off of him a little now that they've switched him to a relief role. Other than his control the second thing that concerns me is that he's a FB/SL pitcher, and although he's shown no issues I worry about the stress that puts on his arm. In the last round I figured I'd take a flyer on him because he's a big, durable (so far) flame thrower. If he can get his control in order i could have another elite arm in my pen.

With A34 likely out I PM'd Farvin.

I plan on doing a similar write up to what 121 did soon, and will try to comment on others also.

Lineup vs RHP:

1. Harper CF
2. Zobrist RF
3. Dunn DH
4. Freese 3B
5. Victorino LF
6. Ellis C
7. Wallace 1B
8. Drew SS
9. LeMahieu 2B

BN: Francoeur
BN: Scott Hairston
BN: Andino
BN: Bobby Wilson

Lineup vs LHP

1. Harper CF
2. Zobrist 2B
3. Dunn DH
4. Freese 3B
5. Victorino LF
6. Ellis C
7. Francoeur RF
8. Wallace 1B
9. Drew SS

BN: LeMahieu
BN: Scott Hairston
BN: Andino
BN: Bobby Wilson

With the platoon of LeMahieu and Francoeur (having Zobrist move between 2nd and RF as needed), I can post a solid lineup against both left and right handed pitchers.  I feel like my bench rounded out into a solid strength and that this team will not have trouble scoring well above average runs.  This offense is projected to produce about 28 fWAR, though I'm hoping to exceed that through the use of platoons.  Harper, Zobrist, Freese and Dunn hitting 1-4 should provide me with some solid pop at the top of the order, but this will not be an offense that relies on the long ball. There are good OBP's throughout, especially when you adjust for position, with the exception of Wallace, who I am hoping to see grow into an acceptable bat for a first baseman.  He'll never be a better than average stick for his position, though.

Harper and Zobrist provide a little speed on the base paths for Freese and Dunn to try and drive in, while Victorino gives the bottom of the order someone speedy to work with, but this isn't a terribly fast team.  The offense was built to get on base and they should do that just fine.

Rotation:

SP: Cliff Lee
SP: Trevor Cahill
SP: Edwin Jackson
SP: Joe Saunders
SP: Mike Leake

CL: Casey Janssen
SU: Andrew Bailey
SU: Louis Coleman
MR: Christian Garcia
MR: Joe Thatcher
LR: Randy Choate

DL: Shaun Marcum

So I'm really glad I decided to pick up Saunders as Marcum is starting off the year unable to pitch.  Maybe he comes back in May or June and is fine, maybe he ends up missing most of the year.  Either way, I have Leake in the rotation which weakens my pen a little, but allows me to soften the blow of Marcum coming up lame.  My current rotation has 15 fWAR projected, though that's a little low since Leake is projected as a part time starter and part time reliever.  My total fWAR projection should even out a bit, though, since it includes an assumption that he'd miss time in his IP.  Leake throws a few more, Marcum a few less.  If this ends up being a long term or season ending injury, then obviously my total fWAR will drop.

My bullpen is projected to put up 2.2 fWAR and Marcum on the DL is projected at 1.9.  This pen won't be a top of the league pen, but it should be far from the bottom.  Two guys at the top who can be "closers" and some solid options for both situations where a walk isn't acceptable (to start an inning, for instance) and for when you really need a strikeout.  When Marcum gets back, Leake will return to set up duties which bumps Coleman down to middle relief and I'll feel a lot better about my pen's depth.

If there's any pick I really regret, I think it's Shaun Marcum.  There were some solid options left for first base that all went between that pick and my next, and one in particular that I was really annoyed at losing in Tyler Moore.  And, of course, Mike Leake was still available when it came back around to me and quite a few starters that went immediately after Leake would have been comparable value to Marcum (Vogelsong, Burnett, Colby Lewis, maybe even John Lackey).  Hindsight is 20-OhFuckMe, though.

All said, this team is projected to win 94.5 games.  Not too shabby.

How relentlessly optimistic and free of self-criticism. It's good to be perfect, eh? ;-)

No offense but I really couldn't care less about another post that assumes everything goes great. If you have no regrets, no things that went wrong, no decisions you regret and think a team with Jeff Francouer getting playing time is a 95 win team...well, OK.

I give your write up a 2/10. Boring and lacking a downside scenario. Too Kurkjian-like to entertain. Lacks Francouer bashing.

I actually did add a regret while you were posting that.  Though it's not Francoeur, who I think will be OK as a platoon partner.  It's Marcum.  Overall, I am pretty happy with my roster, though.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013 Massachusetts Master Batters!

1, Yoenis Cespedes LF (R)
2. Andy Dirks RF (L)
3. Pablo Sandoval 3B (B)
4. Freddie Freeman 1B (L)
5. Justin Ruggiano CF (R)
6. Wilson Ramos C (R)
7. Chris Johnson DH (R) or Nate McLouth (L)
8. Josh Rutledge SS (R)
9. Omar Infante 2b (R)

Bench:
Chris Gimenez (C, corner IF & OF)
Nate McLouth OF
Daniel Descalso IF
Avisail Garcis OF

Rotation:
1. Justin Verlander (R)
2. Hiroki Kuroda (R)
3. Brandon Morrow (R)
4. Drew Smyly (L)
5. Carlos Villanueva (R)

Bullpen:
Closer: Wade Davis (R)
Setup: Darren O'Day (R)
Setup: Jeremy Horst (L)
Mid: Junichi Tazawa (R)
Mid: Franklin Morales (L)
Mid: Stephen Pryor (R)
Long: Jared Hughes (R)

The positives:
Lineup features a lot of good, but not great hitters who get on base at about a .350 clip, and slug about .450. Defense is not spectacular, but is solid across the board; there's no stone gloves in the mix. Lots of positional flexibility. Rotation is anchored by a great and freakishly consistent pitcher. Bullpen is deep with many good 7-8th inning options.

Negatives: Lineup is a little too RH. No truly great hitter in the middle of the order, unless Freeman or Cespedes improve or Sandoval bounces back to 2011 form. The rest of the rotation has some question marks; Kuroda is old, Morrow has had his share of injuries that have limited his development. Smyly just lost the #5 rotation spot to Porcello in the real world. Villanueva is a spot starter put into a full-time role for a whole season. Unproven closer.

Regrets: Avisail Garcia. I actually like him, despite his hacktastic ways. I wanted a prospect that projects to have power, as that's a commodity that seems to drying up. I just drafted him about 8 rounds too early.

I didn't plan to take Verlander at #12, (I was looking at Votto) but when he was available, I jumped. I think he's the best pitcher in baseball, and at 30, should be at his peak for a few seasons. The idea was to get young, but established MLB players who looked ready to break out. I also wanted a team that was somewhat balanced and took defense into some consideration. Overall, I'm happy with the team, I think it follows my plan fairly well. We'll have to see which of these players do break out though- without someone stepping up this year or next, my guess is it's probably an 85-87 win team against the other teams here.

Thanks. Was figuring to just stick Santana on the bench, but, I suppose keeping him in an RP slot at least keeps him available if he does happen to come back again at some point. And, I'm going to be going with someone for my bench with my last pick anyway, so not like I need the other RP slot for anything.

Kind of sucks to have wasted an 11th-round pick on Santana like I did when there were still so many options who would still actually be useful, but, ah well, that's my own fault. And, hey, when we look back on this draft, at least that will probably put me in the lead for the worst overall pick (and hide the shame of my 7th round Ryan Howard pick)

Being this is a real "fantasy" draft should we be trying to work our final rosters and pitching rotations around injuries? I don't plan to work around some of the kids I picked being in AAA, and I think injuries fall close to the same category. Either way they're not actually playing in the majors. For optimal purposes I think we should do our final analysis like our entire team was starting the year healthy at the ML level.

I disagree with the injury part, some of these guys were starting the season on the DL and we knew that when we picked them(Luebke & Beachy stick out in my mind), it's real and we need to account for it. The AAA thing though, I do agree with though. I mean people can "put them in AAA" but I doubt I'll account for that

I agree.  You're basically GM and have the rights to everyone you drafted--if you want, you can call up those AAA guys (or play the guys who are now in Japan in MLB) and use them on the big team.  But if someone's injured, you can't magically heal them.

Agree with players like Beachy and Hudson, who would not have fallen as far as they did but for the injury.

But on guys like Teixiera or Santana who got injured after being drafted I think maybe we should give them a pass. Presumably any simulator will include it's share of injuries anyway and I think this draft should be based on facts known on the first day of drafting.

This pretty got thrown out the window (IMO) when we got to ST and hadn't finished. Not complaining at all, just pointing it out.

Jonathan Lucroy Right C
David Cooper Left DH
Andrelton Simmons Right SS

Brandon Beachy Right SP
Tyler Skaggs Left SP
Erasmo Ramirez Right SP
Jeff Locke Left SP
Zach McAllister Right SP

Jordan Walden Right CL
Tim Collins Left RP
Joba Chamberlain Right RP
Brayan Villareal Right RP
Joe Wieland Right RP

Ok so here it is, Redwoods won the fan vote on the back of adolescent boys and juvenile grownups who appreciate the comedy options.
Some Housekeeping.... Beachy is obviously out until July, and the logical replacement (Wieland) is also out, so Joba makes his return to starting. Cooper may miss the year, which hurts. However the spot at DH will mostly go to Darnell, with occasional appearances by Cowgill. Also on occasion Moore will slide to DH with Barton starting at 1B.
In my hypothetical league, Cooper and Beachy are going on the 60 day, and Wieland on the 15. So I would call up 2 RP (at least 1 LHP) and a 5th OF.

Positives: Great defense just about everywhere on the diamond (more like above average at 1B and RF except when Barton and Cowgill play). Very young with a lot of opportunity for improvement. Rotation has a lot of guys with very good control and good K rates. Bullpen has a lot of big time arms.

Negatives: Very inexperienced, not a ton of power, not much in the way of established bullpen arms, only 1 lefty in the pen.

Regrets:  Cargo. Should have gone with one of Wright/Pedey there since I was going to take Jackson. Also Cooper. I drastically underestimated the severity of his injury. should have grabbed a reliever like Tazawa there.

Yeah, I'm fine with not getting any production out of Santana if he never starts again. I mean, part of the reason he was a risk to draft was because of his injury history, and the likelihood of it recurring. I mean, if we could have just assumed "typical for him" production from him in his "healthy" state, I think he would have gone pretty early. But part of the reason he didn't is because, while he's still relatively younger, he's obviously an injury risk, and I knew that when picking him. Sucks that I didn't end up getting anything out of him (although who knows, maybe he'll come back again), but such is life.

I'm obviously incredibly biased (I'd love a healthy Granderson and Headley), but I think this argument is valid. I probably wouldn't have drafted either of them if they were hurt beforehand at that point and if we're going to sim this, I would assume that the sim would start around the time the draft started.

I won't be upset if I have to start with Granderson and Headley on the DL or anything, just that I think the argument's fine that PW is making. If Mike Minor needs TJS in May, will we have to work that into the sim as well?
