SOSH Real Fantasy Draft 2014: Draft Order, Rules, and Draft Thread

I'll try a fifth outfielder with a decent upside.

Brandon Guyer, BP

He's basically the Rays version of Ryan Kalish.  He tore up the minor leagues and showed all five tools, but for the last couple years, he's gotten unlucky injuries every time he's had a shot at the majors.

This year it's looking like he'll finally get his chance, platooning in left field for the platoon-happy Rays.

Damn guys, I know it's late but let's try and finish this up instead of stalling out completely.

Dustin McGowan, BP

Didn't do well in his first start in forever, but it was just one start. I think he ends up in the pen as he was decent there last year. Or ends up hurt again, but worth a shot.

Well, need a backup OF, and someone who can potentially take over the position by midseason or so if BJ can;t find his game.   Position has been picked pretty thin in terms of major leaguers and prospects.   This guy could probably use another half season in the minors, but he also isn't likely to be overwhelmed at the major league level.

Course he also just might be a complete stiff who can never stay healthy long enough to ever help a team

Well, I really like what I've done with my team this year. Unlike last year, where I had a number of holes that I was trying to plug up with the last couple of picks of the draft, this year I'm really happy with how things have come together. So, while I could risk hoping this guy fell to me in the last round, this year I have the ability to play it safe and make sure that doesn't happen by taking him now.

You can all admit it, all of your teams are automatically lacking compared to mine, and you're all jealous that I am once more going with:
Pedro Martinez (BP)

I don't care what anyone says, and what year it may be, there will never be a year when I am not thrilled about having Pedro Martinez on my team. Last year I missed out on drafting a backup catcher by taking him, but this year I'm perfectly fine with how my team is now, and being able to select Pedro is just the crowning aspect of my team. Sorry all.

(Also, I figure having him on my bench will boost the production of all the rest of my pitchers too)

well since I don't think my team is the greatest thing since sliced bread I'm going to go ahead and take a player that has a better than 0% chance of giving me some type of production and take:

Tyler Thornburg (RP)

yet another pitcher because it looks like my team is going to need it. Loosing Parker for possibly ever is kind of bummer. Right now Villanueva is my 5th starter but Thornburg is next in line in case he craps the bed. I've been picking a lot of old guys recently so adding another young starter here is nice.

I`ve been picking my team for a five year window. I have a few guys in their early 30`s. I don`t see alot left but have a guy who I think is going to be a real stud SP. I`m as excited about him as a sox prospect as anyone in the ml right now. Barnes and Owens might be higher on alot of lists but I really like,

I picked this guy in the ninth round last year? WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?

I don't even know if this is a good pick in the 24th round.

The Roma Legio X select an actual Italian baseball player (sort of) Chris Colabello, BP2

This is a guy who I had totally heard of before this draft.  He doesn't bring much defensively, he's not young and he hit .194 last year at the major league level. So there's some downside here. On the other hand, he hit .352/.427/.639 in AAA and he's hitting .385/.500/.615 this spring. Before that he raked in independent leagues. I would think if he has any upside at all he's going to earn some playing time with the Twins, while I'll use him as the RH side at 1B with Carp and as a bat off the bench. Maybe he can Daubach his way into a little career for himself.
11 m-fing RBIs in 6 games. Not bad for Round 19. I think he's currently running away with the 1B job.

RGB selects RP Lucas Harrell, Astros

Harrell is only entering his age 29 season, he has good stuff, but his control kills him.  In 2012 he had an ERA+ of 107 in 32 starts, last year he started to get wild and this year after his first start it looks like that will continue.  If he can improve his control he can be a solid 5th starter, but for me he will be a long man and I hope his control can straighten out.  I can say he will have more k's then Pedro Martinez this year, and Pedro went before him.

I'm going to use my last minor league pick on a top pitching prospect with over 450 minor league innings. Unfortunately he hasn't pitched above AA... yet. Admittedly he's not quite there, but he's really close. At this point in the draft I'm going to have to go with his potential and the hope that this kids mindset and competitiveness help with his control issues and mold him into a solid middle of the rotation starter. There was some talk this spring (mainly fans) of him having a shot in the major league rotation this year and one of his pitching instructors (Roy Halladay) speaks highly of him and says he already has major league stuff. That's good enough for me.

The Wonderbeards select Jesse Biddle, RP

The 6'4" 225 lb lefty has a plus-plus 12-6 curve, a low 90's FB, a decent change and is also working on a slider. His command has been the biggest issue so far but his stuff generates a lot of K's. The Phillies #1 pitching prospect should make the jump to AAA this year and could very well see a September call up, so injecting him into the bigs doesn't seem too far fetched to me. Although he just got rocked in his first AA appearance this year, it was against the Sea Dogs so I'm going to give him a pass. I'm honestly surprised he's still available at this point. From the scouting reports he seems more major league ready than some of the other prospects taken.

No worries man. I was on SoSH anyways, I should have noticed the little badge in the upper right but I didn't. I usually get an email/mobile notification from the app but I didn't. My fault, really :)

Yeah, I'm sure I could have waited, but I wanted to make sure.
Pedro isn't someone that you want to miss out on.

Well, I am switching Callaspo onto 3rd and Reynolds onto the bench, just waiting for Sumner to process it.
It's definitely my weakest position, yeah, but, between the two of them, and the other utility guys I have (both Descalso and Bonifacio had games there in 2013), I can keep it covered.

How are you guys feeling about your teams this year? I've had some bad luck already with injuries but still think mine should be pretty good, curious to see if anyone believes they have a real title contender, given all the injury attrition and shit that's happened since when we did this. The lineup definitely has some weak points, but it seems like it should be just about league average to me, while I think the starters could be excellent. Looking like it might have been a mistake to roll with the 5-man bench, seems like I have too many utility infielders and not enough bullpen guys.

Likely lineup order, if everyone is ever healthy:
1. SS Jurickson Profar
2. 2B Matt Carpenter
3. LF Ryan Braun
4. 1B Mike Carp
5. C Salvador Perez
6. 3B/DH Eric Chavez/Logan Forsythe platoon
7. RF Nate Schierholtz/Casper Wells platoon
8. 3B/DH Mark Reynolds
9. CF Cameron Maybin

BENCH Dioner Navarro (C), Casper Wells (4th OF; fill in CF), Jake Elmore (utility IF), Logan Forsythe (utility IF/OF; fill in SS? if he can't handle it Elmore will have to), Scott Sizemore (2B/3B)

Rotation:
1. Julio Teheran
2. Chris Tillman
3. Nate Eovaldi
4. Scott Kazmir
5. R.A. Dickey

Bullpen:
CL Trevor Rosenthal
High-lev situations: Paco Rodriguez, Brad Peacock
Other guys: George Kontos, Jordan Lyles
Long-term DL: Cory Luebke

EDIT: Oops!! This is my team from 2013, meant to post it in that thread. Don't mind me.

This is what my team looks like right now:

C: Joe Mauer
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Omar Infante
SS: Asdrubal Cabrera
3B: Alberto Callaspo
LF: Carl Crawford
RF: Shane Victorino
CF: Curtis Granderson
DH: Victor Martinez

1: Justin Verlander
2: Gio Gonzalez
3: Jered Weaver
4: Hector Santiago
5: Eric Stultz

CL: Jonathan Papelbon
RP1: Rafael Soriano
RP2: Brad Ziegler
Long/6th starter: Paul Maholm
Currently on DL, eventual Long/6th starter: Gavin Floyd

Bench:
Backup C: Carlos Ruiz
3B/1B/DH: Mark Reynolds
SS/2B/3B: Daniel Descalso
CF/LF/RF/2B (and, in a pinch, SS and 3B too) : Emilio Bonifacio

Awesome: Pedro Martinez

Overall, I have bench players who can cover every single position if needed (either due to injury or giving people time off), Ruiz can work through with Mauer and Pujols to give Mauer some time at 1st and DH and Pujols some time off, I can rotate people through positions, have a couple of guys in my bullpen easily capable of stepping into the rotation if needed, and some good guys for the 8th and 9th innings.

And, I have Pedro Martinez

(And, I literally had the wrong year before :p )

BP Bryce Brentz

My OF is pretty thin and the remaining OFers are not pleasant.  If his true talent level is closer to 2012 than to 2013, he could be a nice piece.  I like the power upside this late in the draft.

Terri, that's a damn good GFIN team. In 4 years you're going to have dust and bandages though.

Nice pick Tax man. I looked at Brentz a couple rounds ago. I'm surprised he lasted this long. The power potential there is pretty intriguing.

Dust, bandages, and a couple of World Series trophies.

And, even in a world where we can't bring along younger players to replace the older ones (as is the case here. Which also means I don't have to deal with the fact that I would need to be bringing along so many at once), I'd still take significantly higher odds at some World Series wins, over gambling on young players hoping that enough of them pan out to have a chance at competing several years down the road (and not being able to bring in any replacements if they don't pan out)

You make a good point. Because there aren't really any future considerations it makes sense to plan for a big couple years instead of the long haul. I think the trick with this exercise is to try to find both a team that can compete now and for the foreseeable future.
