Awesome.

I've just set up this year's SoSH league. League ID 4675-2028.

For newbies, you can just auto-choose your team to get into the game, and then join the league. You can then make as many changes to your squad as you like before the season begins. Let me know if anyone has problems joining the league.

This year, can everyone post their team name when they join up? I want to track this year, and do thinks like poop in SJH's Norwich jersey.

Figuratively.

Question to those with more experience: If the price of a player changes between now and the start of the season, do I keep the player at the price that I originally added him to the team or at the new price?

There are no price changes before the start of this season.

To show the growth in this thing, the first year I did this I ended up with 1700 points, and my overall ranks was like 237,000. Last season, I had nearly 2000 points, and my rank was around 1,000,000.

I finished in the top four last season, which is like winning a trophy.  Shooting to win the league this year.

To further emphasise DD's comment, this will be Season 9 for me and my history reads like this:

2006/07    1933  points  21315 position
2007/08    1936            283234
2008/09    1941              57752
2009/10    1933            609714
2010/11    1953            161406
2011/12    1813              76147
22012/13  1932            427768
2013/14    2135            509070

So last season was my highest points score and my second lowest league position.

I'm guessing it's best to keep all strategy and tactical questions here in the same thread throughout the season?

A question I'll throw in straight away, having used the auto-complete function just to register the team it's actually presented me with an interesting dilemma...Hart or Courtois for goalkeeper?

I know it's probably too early to judge but what's the word on the (West London) street? Courtois to start or not?

Who offers that?
Through the official site, when you create a league it can be traditional or head-to-head, so you can setup and enter both types.

And, I'm in that too. It appears that you carry the same squad into each?

Another reason your rank can go down despite your points score going up is that some years are higher-scoring years.  These tend to be years where it's easy to identify the high scorers and captain picks tend to be straightforward and rewarding.  Last year was a year like that, you could ride the Saurez/Sturridge/Yaya gravy train all the way to the bank nearly every week, and there were a couple really massive double gameweeks where if you set your team up properly you could get 3-digit hauls (my best week last year was 183 points, 2014 GW31 will be spoken about in hushed tones in FPL circles for generations).  2010 was a similar year, except it was Lampard and Drogba that year.  2013 was the opposite, with the exception of RVP a lot of the top players disappointed.

Yes, you only manage a single team, but you can enter it in multiple leagues.

The H2H league works on the same principal as a normal league system...you play another team in your league H2H each week and the highest points scorer that week get 3 points, 1 point for a tie (yes, I know you don't like ties but get used to it), Winner has most points at the end of the season. If there's an odd number of entrants, team 'Average' is created by the system that scores the average points score for the entire game.

Actually, if it works like previous years, the top 8 teams make the playoffs played during the last 3 gameweeks.

Edit: Looks like the changed it to a pure H2H.

There are things to be careful of:

--Any kind of situation where it's not sure who's going to start or not.   Obviously, teams playing in CL/Europa and which go deep into the domestic cups have more stress on the roster and are at more risk for having top guys sit.  Certain teams are also higher risk for not knowing who's going to start.  Chelsea was fucking maddening last year (except for the back four and Cech), and ManU was also bad for not knowing when certain guys would play.  Paradoxically, the teams at the top of the table are higher-risk, because they are so loaded that great players sit every week.  The best bet for steady playing time is sometimes a guy who's the best player on a mid-table team (or worse) with no European responsibilities.  I would be leery of the Cech/Courtois situation.

--Having the same guys as everyone else.  You can't afford to be left behind when the Yayas and the Suarezes run wild so you need some of the top guys, but you also won't gain any ground if you're 125 points back of the leader in Week 15 and you have the exact same guys.  You have to look for under-owned players with good upside (frequently found on bad teams)  to differentiate yourself.  A lot of this depends on matchups - a certain team's strikers may not be setting the world on fire, but if they are at home against a bad defensive team, they might be worth a look.

--You need depth, but not too much depth.  You have 15 on the roster, so you have a keeper sub and three outfield subs on the bench for each game.  You rank the outfield subs in order of playing preference, and if one of your roster players does not play, the subs take their place in order.  So it's important to have some depth.  It also helps to have some ability to take advantage of favorable matchups.  But if you sink too much of your £100M into guys who aren't going to play every week, it takes away from your ability to spend money elsewhere.  I tried to spend as little as I possibly could on my backup keeper, my fifth defender, and my fifth midfielder.

Some more strategic points:

- Pay attention to who takes penalties and free kicks.  Especially on the weaker teams, and doubly so if it's not a forward, these guys can be good value for your 4th/5th midfielder/defender slots.  But this also applies to the stronger teams.  A lot of Gerrard's value last year was that he scored 10 penalties.
- Fixtures matter, A LOT.  Especially for defenders/goalkeepers, who do far better at home.  You can often find two cheap goalkeepers whose home/road fixtures align, and then you just start whichever one is at home that week and spend the extra money up front.  Before you transfer a player, plan your lineup out for the next few weeks taking fixtures into account.
- Especially at the start of the season, be wary of the players who overachieved the previous season.  A lot of them will regress to the mean.  An extreme example last year was Michu, who scored 17 goals in 2012-13 and 2 last year.
- search out players who play out of position and/or are wrongly categorized by the game, e.g. players listed as midfielders who actually play as forwards, or players listed as defenders who actually play as midfielders.
- don't overload any part of your team with players from one club unless there's a reaaaally good reason to do so (like SAS last year).  You generally want to be diversified.  This is especially true at the back, since clean sheets are the main source of points performance among players from one club are highly correlated.

Mrs. OCST's attitude toward my new football habit has evolved over time from dismay, to acceptance, to interest, and now, after the WC, she's hooked.

She's in, as Bunderland.

I look forward to losing to her in the H2H league, and having my defeat be celebrated.

I will of course be defending my title.  We realize it's a very competitive league and will be strengthening this summer, I've spoken to the Chairman and have been promised funds will be made available to buy 15 new players.

Current name is Argentina Hotspur but I'm trying to come up with a better name.

31 teams signed up already. Fantastic! Let's get as many as possible.

Can we invite outside folks?

We have in the past, and I have a buddy or two that have participated once or twice.

Also, this wouldn't apply to established viewers, but are you looking for a way to be interested in the EPL? Pick a few guys in this game and root for them at the weekend. Good way to interest newbies and you'll learn a lot more about the Leicesters and QPRs of the world that way.
