He finally cracked. Dukesh picked the right strategy today with a very sharp, Benko type opening with weird complications throughoutDing doing his best Donovan McNabb impression down the stretch here.
No kidding:Clock management was wild that game.
I think Gukesh got overconfident after his win, thought maybe Ding was collapsing, and IMHO played way too ambitiously as black in the opening when all he needed was a draw. This became apparent when he went for Nc6 early.
I feel like the conventional wisdom is Gukesh pulls it out. I could easily see any of the following happen:
1) Ding cracks under the pressure (or is just a human) and blunders in a way that is punished. He has had some rocky moves, including a blunder on move 40 in the most recent game and the evaluation got high as +1.66 but Gukesh couldn't covert.
2) Ding plays it safe, doesn't push advantages as white (which we've seen already) and tries to make it to tie breakers where he has an advantage in rapid.
3) Gukesh, clearly feeling very confident and willing to accept somewhat subpar positions/turning down draws in difficult situations, overextends and gets punished.
You kind of did it againTo be fair, I did basically give multiple options of what could happen so had many options to get it right. Still, I will take the teeny tiny internet victory when I can.
To add to the thread, very interested to see where things go from here. Does Ding go back to his theoretical strategy of playing for draws to gain a potential edge in rapid? Or does this game unleash the Ding(TM) and lead to him playing more aggressive with the white pieces and go for a knockout? I suspect Gukesh will play the same, as it is in his interest to push for a win in the next few games.
ShhhhYou kind of did it again
Yeah, Gukesh has not been as strong as faster speeds and Ding would have had good chances.Shhhh
I'll be honest, I did not expect THAT to happen. I fully expected it to go to tie-breaks.
Probably more rooted in the Freestyle Chess kerfuffle and his general disenchantment with FIDE than his love of jeans.Yep. Was asked not to wear jeans. Basically responded "I care more about wearing jeans than I care about your stupid f'ing tournament."

This is the start of the end of FIDE. Magnus will lead the way.Probably more rooted in the Freestyle Chess kerfuffle and his general disenchantment with FIDE than his love of jeans.
Sucks. Anything that gives any oxygen to Hans sucks. I know controversy draws eyeballs, but the game's better when it gets fame for legitimate reasons and not from admitted cheaters splitting hairs.Hans vs. Magnus in the Top 8 Round 1!
Magnus blundered away a win against Hans and they drew in Round 10 of qualifiers.
I dunno, Hans is legit becoming a threat now, I think, at least at blitz. Magnus barely escaped today.Sucks. Anything that gives any oxygen to Hans sucks. I know controversy draws eyeballs, but the game's better when it gets fame for legitimate reasons and not from admitted cheaters splitting hairs.
I'm not saying he's not a talented player. I'm saying he's an admitted cheater and rageholic venue-destroyer who's bad for the game and should be shunned.I dunno, Hans is legit becoming a threat now, I think, at least at blitz. Magnus barely escaped today.
