By the way, just for the record, the Celtics now have the longest championship drought in major New England pro sports.

Patriots:  0 years (last championship:  2015)
Red Sox:  1 year (last championship:  2013)
Bruins:  3 years (last championship:  2010-11)
Celtics:  6 years (last championship:  2007-08)

Since 2001, we have experienced 9 pro championships:

Patriots:  4 (2001-02, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2014-15)
Red Sox:  3 (2004, 2007, 2013)
Bruins:  1 (2010-11)
Celtics:  1 (2007-08)

Just remarkable.

Meanwhile, the quaint, fair city of New York, with twice as many teams as we do, has a whopping *three* championships over that time frame:

Giants: 2 (2007-08, 2010-11)
Yankees:  1 (2009)

Nothing at all for the Knicks, Islanders, Mets, Rangers, Nets, or Jets.

Defense wins championships!!

The article says:

Malcolm Butler wasn't even on the field when the Seahawks first huddled for the play that resulted in the Patriots' game-saving interception in Super Bowl XLIX.

The Patriots originally aligned with their goal-line defense, featuring linebacker Akeem Ayers. Once they noticed three wide receivers in the Seahawks' huddle, two assistant coaches adjusted, sending Butler in to replace Ayers.

I think Ayers was on the field, he was on Lynch.

EDIT: Maybe not...jut watched another angle. It's tough to see who's on Lynch.

I think it was Jamie Collins.

The video with Butler running on shows Ayers running off, but I thought the guy on Lynch was wearing a number in the 50s. It wasn't Nink or Hightower, and I can't imagine it was Casillas. Maybe Ayers ran back on?

Here's Ayers coming off:

I thought it was Ayers too, as the player covering him had a number in the 50s. I can't imagine it was Casillas. Hightower was in the middle of the field spying on Wilson. Only other possibility would Darius Fleming (58).

Who are the coaches there?

I think one is either Patrick Graham (linebackers) or Brian Flores (safeties).

It was Chandler Jones, everyone. #95.

That was my next guess, but I figured he'd be rushing the QB, but I guess his height would work well if Wilson was going to try to float one to Lynch.

Ayers and McCourty both come off in the video. Butler could be replacing McCourty just as easily.

To be fair, he spent at least his high school and college years in Washington and finished his career in Seattle which probably represented a homecoming for him. Clearly wasn't just being a dick or something. Plus he's wearing his ring.

I don't know if it my computer, but in that gif it looks like Wilson hits his man and as soon as he catches the ball he is morphs into Butler.  It's kind of awesome.

Each time I see a replay or a new photo, my appreciation for Browner's role in that play escalates

If Wilson didn't throw that and rolled out to his left towards Lynch, Chandler Jones was going to have to make a really quick decision.

True, but I would bet if there was a rollout to that side, then Baldwin attempts to pick off Hightower leaving Jones to make a decision and hope Revis recognizes what's happening and jumps on Lynch.

The Inside The NFL video is incredible. I loved when Kearse is on the sideline and says "they benched 25 for 21" in the 3rd quarter. That's Chekhov's gun right there.

Props to Al Michaels for his identifying on the fly Butler as the guy making the interception. It seems too quick for him to be using a spotter in his ear there.

Oh, I found this too. Jones on Lynch, clear as day. No idea how on earth I thought the number began with 5.

I still have no idea how Butler got to that ball.  I will never understand how that play didn't end up in a touchdown for Seattle.

And I am totally okay with that.

Watched a one hour version of the game on nfl2go last night.

Can't believe the pats were in the position to lose. Other than the third quarter they dominated.

And I espexially can't believe they won on that. It's almost impossible.

Because as much as people want to crap on Carroll, the fact is, it was an INCREDIBLE play by Butler (with huge help from Browner).  Every time people focus on "the call" they take away from what Butler did.  It was the greatest play of his career, and it will ALWAYS be the greatest play of his career, no matter if he makes a hundred other great ones.

Oh I totally agree, Ivan, and that's kind of what I was going for.  I actually don't think the play call was nearly as egregiously bad as so many of the mediots want it to be.... the play that Butler made, once I have more time to process it (because I'm still not sure I entirely have processed it), may be the greatest play I have ever seen.

I mean, just in that picture, the ball is already more than halfway to Lockette, and looks like it is gonna hit him in the chest.  Butler is still a full yard off the ball.  Wilson looks like he is ready to start celebrating, for crying out loud.... they got exactly the look they wanted, he got the man open, made the pass and up until this point it honestly looks like a championship play for the Seahawks.

And then Butler happens.  And it is totally glorious.

at about 24:40, presumably before he catches the TD pass, Edelman turns and fist bumps Amendola and says, "Hey, I love you, buddy".  Then goes up to the O-Line and says, " I fucking love you guys".

Has anyone become such a Boston sports legend so quickly?  Butler is there but as of now he is a one trick pony, Edelman has been doing this for a few years now yet didn't get much "awesomeness" recognition.
