Here's a little story relayed during MMQB podcast.

When the Patriots interviewed Russell at the combine, they asked him "we got a pretty good QB in Tom Brady, are you okay with that"? To which Russell allegedly replied "if you draft me and I'm coming to the Patriots, I'm going to take his job".

P.S. As an atheist, Warner nor Russell never bothered me. And Tebow's deal was grating at worst. If Russell is genuine about his faith, who am I to knock it?

Yeah, don't have any problem with it either, unless it seems fake. If the guy is an arrogant piece of shit and keeps spouting off about Jesus it can get under my skin a bit, but Wilson is by all accounts a great guy.

Jackie MacMullen goes and commits some actual journalism, doing a heartwarming backstory on Malcolm Butler and his many mistakes and setbacks on the way to his current promising career.

I'd normally add "of course, don't read the comments", but in this case, the comments are all unanimous in bashing MacMullen for her previous unthinking slams on the Patriots, and asking her when she's going to apologize.  Well done, Internet.

Long time fan of hers, but to be honest, that's the first thing that came to my mind (her assuming the Patriots were guilty).

I meant the producers/network wouldn't want to saturate the program with representatives from a single team/region, not that the Patriots wouldn't allow it.

This was my reaction as well.

On the one hand, Butler should probably milk this for all it is worth.

On the other hand, he may want to lie low and work as hard as he possibly can to make sure he sticks on the active roster next year.

I don't know. If I were a Seahawks fan, it would probably piss me off to hear Wilson blaming God for his terrible performance during the first three quarters of the NFC Championship Game.

I'm probably just high on Super Bowl fumes, but I not only expect Butler to make the roster next year: I expect him to have a much larger role on the team. He showed in the preseason that he has a nose for the ball and an ability to stay with the play and compete -- and some of these reps were against the opponents starters. He showed in the Super Bowl the same things we saw from him in the preseason, only on a much larger stage.

(He's also very easy to like once you see his interviews, which could also be distorting my expectations.)

Interesting attire. BB's gone Hollywood with his personalized hoodie and Rex is sporting the throwback Thurman Thomas jersey.

Where's your helmet, Rex?

Hey look, pal--this is the bask in the triumph thread and I'm with the muppet: Butler was lights out in the second half.

I still remember his first great play and thinking, "What the fuck is he doing in there--someone must've gotten either hurt and benched." Then on the second excellent play, trying to explain to a couple of people that he really wasn't even supposed to be in there.

That turned out to be some pretty awesome foreshadowing.

There was a lot of love for Butler even during pre-season if I recall. I'd have bet on Butler sticking around for a while, even if the pick didn't happen (i.e., Browner mentioning that Butler got the most number of picks during practice, although Garoppolo probably threw most of them.)

Well, Butler was humblebragging a bit on some interview (can't remember where I saw it, maybe nfl.com) about how Tom kept being like, "you intercepted me again??". Plus, the reports of him running a 4.4 40 in a private workout, good situational awareness and an ability to recognize/learn from a practice situation to game play, all bode well for his future. I just hope that his instant fame doesn't make him too complacent, because obviously the Pats saw something great in him to create a roster spot at a position that was already deep with talented players.

I'm optimistic he won't get complacent because the moment where he came up huge was born out of preparation and study.  Obviously you need great physical tools to make that play, but that interception doesn't happen if his practice habits and film work don't lead him to have complete recognition and awareness during that last play.  Hopefully a vet or Belichick will be in his ear reminding him of that frequently over the offseason.

I'm so happy that "25 got benched, 21's in" has replaced "make them go to Manningham" in the foreshadowing department.

Yup, 11:40 is where he nearly knocks the ball out. It was definitely a catch at that point and there were like 4 Pats there to one Seahawk, but still.

13:00 also has Belichick with the high-pitched "WOOOOOO, WOOOO!"

The one shot I haven't seen anywhere that you'd think has to exist is Belichick's reaction to the Butler INT.

That's a really good point.  He celebrates after the encroachment penalty, which makes me think that maybe he was all business after the Butler pick -- trying to figure out down and distance, what the flags were about, how to avoid the safety.  There were so many damned cameras there that if he'd gone ballistic and jumped up and down, I'm sure we would have seen it.  He was probably on to the next play.

Now I have to go back and watch the other SoundFxs I have saved. There is one where Carroll is asking for Tom to "give us another one, you know you can do it", something like that, asking for an interception on the final touchdown drive. I thought it might have been this one, but it's not. Sorry, Pete, your guy is the one that had an INT in store for us at the end.

I'm positive the live broadcast showed Belichick, just briefly, after the butler pick, and that he was completely stone-faced and focused.  There was still game left to be played.  He broke character only after the encroachment, as you say.

I just re-watched the live feed, and there is no Belichick reaction shot.  After the Butler pick, he isn't shown on screen until 2-1/2 minutes later, when the Patriots call a time out at the 1 yard line and Brady goes over to the sideline to discuss strategy with Bill, just before the encroachment penalty.  Perhaps you're thinking of one of the various NFL Super Bowl specials.

Pre-game video as the guys on both teams get ready to go. Some great stuff:

0:24 - Russell Wilson walks the sidelines making bird noises (funny as hell)

1:08 - Edelman doing one handed warm-up catches

2:00 - Edelman: "I got some quick feet today!"

2:10 - Edelman lines up opposite Revis to demonstrate those "quick feet". Faceplant. "Oh Snap!" (as he's going to the ground)

2:20 - Edelman talking after he gets up, "Too excited, too excited". Then "Sniper!" (fakes taking a head shot) This one KILLS me every time!

3:38 - Brady pre-game speech: "It's our time"

4:00 - D-backs pre-kickoff huddle. Devin McCourty seriously fired up, "This is why we all came here!" (then pokes Malcom Butler in the chest and points at him) "This is why YOU made it!" (Talk about premonition chills....Holy shit!)

Must be, or one of the postgame shows that I watched that night until like 3am.  I just very clearly remember seeing the sideline explode around him while he stood there and probably mumbled something about the upcoming offensive formation.

Not that that changes the original point, which is that an image showing BB at that moment, flanked by everyone going nuts, would be a great picture.

Shortly after that clip, at about 4:05, there's a nice little pre-game shot of Butler doing a pirouette all fired up (top right) as a dozen or so of his teammates are all jogging in a linear path.

I know it's probably in the "it's been done" category by now, but I still think the Fly Over with a bunch of jets like before the Super Bowl (or any big game) is awesome.

It's moments before kickoff, everything is fired up with anticipation, and here are some fucking jets screaming over head, just because this moment is already awesome and this will make it even more awesome because 'Merica bro.

I love it.

That's Alex Guerrero ("body coach") visible occasionally to Brady's left. They are almost literally joined at the hip. As Pats fans we owe that guy some kudos, as he plays a big role in Brady's ability to perform at a high level all season long.

It was actually just before the TD pass to Amendola, Pete says "make a mistake, make a mistake right here. C'mon Tom, it's about that time again." Who is he to be that familiar with the future hall of famer. And, he was having far too much fun for a coach that ended up losing. At 45 minutes in SoundFx Super Bowl XLIX. I think that's the best 60 minute replay of the game.

The money quote comes in at the end, when Bill Polian says:

When you're in the middle of a rivalry, you can't see the forest for the trees.

Since I've been a radio analyst with ESPN, I've come to have a completely different view of how Patriots play, how well they're coached, how well they're put together.

They do week-in and week-out in every phase of the game as good or better a job than anyone in the NFL coaching.
That's really a telling (and I thought very sincere) statement from a former -- and bitter -- "rival" GM who battled BB for years.

From a classy Seahawks fan -- a selfie video on Seahawks' last drive (Butler INT happens at the 7:03 mark):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxmtQqkKYtA

To all the Patriot fans... Congratulations on the win. Brady was great and your team made plays when it had to, especially Butler at the end. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

To all the Seahawk haters out there... go ahead. Spew your hate. Talk your trash. We blew the game at the end. This is your chance.

To all my fellow Hawks fans... Wow. What can be said after a loss like this?

First of all, grieve. Grieve in whatever way you feel you need to. If that means having one good cry, screaming your lungs out in anger, or cursing out the ___ (fill in the blank), it's OK. Go for it. Sure, this isn't like the loss of a loved one in real life (heck, it's just a football game, right?). But like I said earlier, this game, this team, this season, transcends just a box score. It has become a part of our lives. And when you lose a game as big as this, as passionate as this and historic as this, it is a personal loss. It does feel like something inside you has died. And we won't get it back. It's over. It's history. People will tell you to get over it, move on. There's always next year. But those words don't help comfort much when the pain is so strong. So grieve, my friends.

Obviously, we all collectively share the frustration and the burning question, "WHY?" in regards to that final play. I have not watched any sports highlights or read any articles yet. It's too soon. We may never know who really was responsible for that decision. Maybe in time, I will learn the X's and O's reason why the slant to Lockette was called. But for now, it makes absolutely no sense: 2nd and goal at the 1, 50 seconds left with 1 time out. The playbook is completely open to you. There is no hurry. No panic. Lynch is having the drive and the game of his life. He just got you to the 1 yard line and you DON'T give him the chance to win the game for you, at least one or two times? I just don't get it. I kept saying "Give it to him again. Give it to him again!" Instead... disaster, shock, disgust, game over. Could someone with a better football IQ please give me one good logical reason why passing the ball in that situation was better than running it. Please? Because right now, I just don't understand it. Coach Carroll preaches "It's not how you start, it's how you finish" and "It's all about the ball".... Both went horribly wrong on the final play...

I love this team. And anyone who knows me, knows how much I believe and trust in the Seahawks. But, just like with the people in my life, there are times when I get frustrated, angry and disappointed with them. It doesn't mean I love them any less. Same goes with this team.

At the same time, unlike a lot of folks out there, I DO NOT believe OC Bevell should be fired because of one call. One mistake does not define a player or coach's value to a team. For one bad call, there were plenty of amazing calls made throughout the course of this epic, historic game. It also does not change my perception of Russell Wilson or how I value him as our QB moving forward.

I think what saddens me the most are the lost story lines that could have been and never will. It should have been Wilson beats Brady. Seahawks: Dynasty in the making. Greatest Super Bowl game in history. Jermaine Kearse: greatest catch in Super Bowl history. But now because of the loss, all the miracles this team accomplished this season, in the minds of the rest of the outside world, will be quickly forgotten. Instead, 2014-15 will be all about Tom Brady's return to MVP greatness, the Patriots rising as the superior team, etc... Oh, and guess what? It's not just our miracles that will be forgotten. Deflategate will be a distant blip on the radar, too. A water cooler, "oh, yeah. I forgot about whole silly story" anecdote people will joke about before they go back to talking about how great the Patriots are and the "See, I told you the Seahawks were just another one-hit wonder" conversation.

But... as I said, I love this team. I am a die-hard 12 and I trust in these coaches, the management and these players. They played their hearts out. They performed like true champions, answering every shot by the Patriots with one of their own. The Patriots were really good. It was a historic game. Russell was incredible. Beast Mode was fantastic. Chris Matthews, wow! The defensive stops. Two picks on Brady. The Kearse catch. So many great moments. When the season starts over again, I'll be right there to record and capture so many more. But for now, I got some grieving of my own to do...

GO HAWKS!!! And thank you, 12s...
