I had no idea that nip was ethnic slur. But Curtis most certainly did. He needs to go away. Banner couple of weeks for Boston radio.

And even if he tries to claim ignorance about the term, what is he going to say? "I was talking about her breasts!"?
Forwarded the tweet to a coworker of Mina's. This shit has to be dealt with.

And your point is....

EDIT: Not defending what was said on the show.
That was the entire point of the segment (before the racism). Mass is looking at getting nips (the alcohol mini's) banned because they can't be recycled. Everyone here already knew that and that's the main topic they were discussing.

I just want to add to the chorus that I had NO idea what that meant and actually went to look it up. I'll turn 39 in a couple weeks and I listened to the clip twice because I thought I was missing something. I feel like you have to be PRETTY deep into your slurs to know that one, and both those guys did with the looks they gave each other.

"Nip" is ABSOLUTELY a slur when applied towards people of Asian descent and while I'm old (51), I'm not THAT old. I feel that such a term is an obvious slur to most people when used in that fashion.

Sorry to be shrill (as usual) but if it's not widely known that's a slur then I'm utterly shocked.

In that clip they are talking about nips in reference to the small bottles of alcohol (which is a common term) before the unacceptable racial comment by the soon-to-be-unemployed douchebag on the right.

Yeah, they were talking about their favorite nips with Courtney saying Dr. McGillicuddy's and fireball and someone else saying screwball. Dipshit just says Mina Kimes with a grin on his face.

edit......of course there's no doubt as to his intent. It didn't take me long to put 2+2 together and assume it was something racial. I had just not personally heard it before.

Yup, that's the disgusting part. He knew what he was doing.

It turns my stomach.

If it's not commonly known that term is a slur in reference to people, then we need to educate more.

I promise you that I'm not being critical of you or anyone else who was equally unaware. But, like SJH, I find it surprising.

I hope I wasn't coming across as saying it was no big deal that the incident happened. I was actually thinking how much WORSE it was that it was a "niche" slur. (and I say this tounge in cheek)

It was clearly done with shitty intent.

No, you're all good.

I very clearly remember reading "West Side Story" in 8th grade and learning that "mick" and "wop" were racial epithets (I literally had never heard them before). So learning takes place at any time and age. You can tell by the look the racist gives to his co-host after his comment that he knows he uttered a racial slur and thinks it's funny. So he knows what he's doing.

I haven't listened to EEI in years. Is this the same Curtis who was a producer with Dennis & Callahan & Minihane? If so, clearly he should have been flushed with the rest of those racists.

Count me among those that were unaware of this particular slur, but the context was pretty clear anyway. I mean, if he was trying to make a breast/nipple reference, Mina Kimes is a really odd top of the mind selection for such a conversation.

It really appears that they're going for the "it was sexist, not racist" defense:

I'm 40 and I'm in the same boat. Never knew about it until now. Agree that he had to know it.

I can't believe I'm writing this, but in trying to give people the benefit of the doubt, I actually think there's a non-zero chance he was doing a "BOOBIES!" joke and actually did confuse the two people. I think it's POSSIBLE that it's an unfortunate coincidence that Kimes is Asian. Especially given people here saying they didn't really think of the racial slur. I think it's worth considering the possibility. Still not cool, but a different type of not acceptable. I dunno.

I couldn't disagree more. Even if he meant it as a boobies joke, he still blurted out a person of Asian decent in response to the word "Nip". It was still in his mind Nip = Asian people. I'm surprised more people haven't heard that term, which is a good sign for society.

The only benefit of the doubt I can give is that maybe there is some kind of office in-joke about Mina Kimes. Like someone on staff has a crush on her or something so bringing her name up in the context of breasts (or even in confusion with Mila Kunis) was an attempt to take a dig at the staffer. But that feels like a huuuuuuuge leap.

Mina Kimes also has to be one of the most beloved people in sports media. Obviously you should never make a comment like that, but the fact that it was about her and not someone more divisive is an even bigger fuck-up.

I mean, how do you explain the joke? Why would anyone make a nipple joke about…. Mila Kunis with that specific syntax? He states the name in response to a question that itself uses the word ‘nip’ as a noun. Mila Kunis isn’t a ‘nip’……she HAS nipples. And what would be so funny about it that the two guys would share looks like that?

No way.

Yeah if he had made it possessive like Mina Kimes’ nips then yeah I guess you could claim sexism over racism. But that isn’t what he’s doing. Look at his face. He knew.

Lots of people no longer know that it's a slur derived from Nippon.

But this guy clearly fucking knew. I'm not sure I would even care that much if I someone said that during bar talk or whatever--it would be wrong and shitty, but in a sort of "what did you say dumbass?" way.

But you can't be doing this shit on the air, and it's not terribly close call.

The in-house joke excuse is the same as when some GOP representative called Barney Frank “Barney F*g.”

It’s awful then and it’s awful now.

I don't listen to the show enough to know these guys backgrounds, but I think he was making a BOOBIES!!!! joke. Don't know if that makes it better or worse.

I briefly felt sorry for Curtis when Minihan used to just brutally rip him apart each segment several years ago. Then once Minihan (mercifully) was no longer on the station I realized Curtis was also just a tool. Hope they move on from him. Can't stand the guy.

Yeah Curtis is a holdover from AT LEAST one sensitivity training session, so I don't think sending everyone back into a day off training like the last time will cut it now. It's getting enough publicity that WEEI will need to make a substantial move.

I only know the slur because Pink Floyd used it in “The Post War Dream.” I’m not surprised that others here are unfamiliar with it. But I’m not sure why that matters.

I mean, do people actually think a guy making a crass boobies joke reached for Mina Kimes, of all people? Come on.

It’s obvious that it was a racist remark, and it’s obvious what should happen next.

There was an old Bugs Bunny cartoon made in the early 40s called “Bugs nips the Nips”, which is where if first heard it. This was the height of WWII propaganda.

I’m 44, I know the slur thanks to reading a lot and a grandfather who fought in the war and tried real hard not to be as racist as his contemporaries. In 2023 one has to dig pretty deep to come up with this one, but it’s not an accident or a boob joke gone wrong.

If it weren't for the knowing look they give each other, I might be able to buy this.

There's another ethnic slur that people in New England use all the time (it gets used on this board a lot, actually), that I had no idea was a slur until my wife (from Texas) heard me say it one day and said something to the effect of "Don't ever use THAT word again". The word is "dink", and it was used to derogatorily describe Vietnamese soldiers during the Vietnam conflict.

It has since been co-opted by New Englanders to mean something like "being an idiot" (I used it all the time growing up, and had no idea), but is also used in America at large to mean "Dual Income No Kids" these days.

As far as I can tell, "nip" doesn't quite have the same potential double meaning in this context.

These guys should rot, but it looks like 'EEI is going to let it slide.

One week suspension because corporate bought that tripe. Gross.

I still can't believe the excuse "I meant to say another women's name and was talking about her nipples being the best" gets him off the hook and only suspended for a week. He got off easy.

I play a lot of poker. There are terms I use all the time that many of you would not have heard before. Many of you would find them confusing and not understand what I am saying when I use them. But the people that I play a lot of poker with all know these terms and know exactly what I mean each time I use them. That’s because they use them all the time, too, and because we are all very, very interested in poker. Many of you would find the whole thing strange and confusing, but trust me when I tell you that it makes perfect sense to us, and that we really love poker.

Not sure what this has to do with the subject. I use accounting terms all the time that non-accountants would find strange. But none of them are also slurs and we don’t exchange knowing glances when we use them

and I always thought “dink” was a childish term for a penis.
