The cradle of the game.
... since The Precious?

I've literally viewed the entire game 5 times, the pick maybe 300 times, every fan reaction video the Internet has to offer, the game thread, and every public appearance by every team member. My DVR is busting at the seams.

Yet I still can't get enough.

This actually reminds me that I haven't watched the entire game from beginning to end this week. And yes, I've tried to make it a weekly thing.

I've been consuming every thread on BBtL on an hourly basis for the past four weeks.  I find myself sitting in front of the laptop, waiting impatiently for the next post.  It's been a feast and I offer many thanks for all the amazing links people have put up here.  I shudder to think what the rest of the winter would have been like without SOSH as the place to revel in.

According to this, the DVD will be released Tuesday

The NFL Films’ Patriots 2014 season recap will be released Tuesday on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download, packed with never-before-seen footage and interviews from the preseason through the Super Bowl. Haven’t seen it yet, but it’s going to be a keeper.

Note that this is not "3 Games to Glory IV," which the Patriots are making and will ship in April.

(Teasing it on PFW, they said that this one has practice footage of Butler getting beat on a certain play during Super Bowl week...)

The cradle of the game.
My fantasy baseball team is going to blow. "Hmmm - take a look at catchers... or fire up the clip of Kurt Warner and his Lombardi Trophy promenade, teeth-grinding grin and all."

It just does not get old.

I have all 3 playoff games on my DVR and I watch them on a rotation, along with Sound FX and Inside the NFL. Has not gotten old and probably won't. I may never delete the games.

I got real drunk last night and I'm told that I commandeered the tv and put the super bowl episode of sound fx on, cheered along to it like I was watching it for the first time, and kissed everyone in the room when the Butler pick happened.

Savoring every minute. It's still gold. And because this was the one we realistically waited for the longest, it may be the sweetest of the four.

Spent this time getting excited about next season too.

When you consider that nobody expected the Pats to win 36, and 38 and 39 were like so bang bang, and we were right there so close but no cigar for so many years since 39, it just might be. For sure it was the most win or be miserable for a long time of all the super bowls, at least for me. Like Brady said, if there were a game he most wanted to win, that was it.

I ripped the Youtube clips of Inside the NFL and converted them to mp3's.  I put them on my iTunes for listening pleasure as well.

This is kind of how I feel.

SB 20 - Just an epic disaster all the way around.  First trip to the SB, beating hated Miami on the road in the AFCCG was sweet.  But the SB itself....awful.  Recovered the fumble early, couldn't convert the TD, and then got just crushed the rest of the way.  Oh well.

SB 31 - Had a good chance to beat a superior team.  Felt like this was a team on the rise.  Lost, and then lost Parcells.  So the whole thing left a sour taste in the mouth.

SB 36 - the dream come true.  Opened the door for all the rest.  Totally unexpected.  Huge upset.  Incredible experience.

SB 38 - Favored, coming off a great season.  Beat a scrappy Panthers team.  Made SB 36 even more legitimate.

SB 39 - Favored, the best team in the league, cemented this as a dynasty.  Great win, felt we should have won it more easily.

SB 42 - The disaster.  A chance for immortality in every way.  The lead up being the Spygate stuff, and the Tomase story.  After the Brady-to-Moss TD, I thought we'd see the 19-0 season.  But Tyree, no flags, and Plaxico.  Ugh.

SB 46 - The revenge game that wasn't.  When the Pats went up 17-9 and Brady was slinging darts all over, I thought the Pats would win. But Manningham...ugh.  Twice to the Giants.

SB 49 - The Deflategate nonsense.  Beating the Ravens in stirring fashion in the Divisional round.  Brady's third MVP against a great, great defense.  The Pick by Butler.  Just...unbelievable.  In many ways, for so many reasons, the sweetest victory of them all.  Ring #4 for Brady. His legacy cemented for all-time.  An incredible game and an incredible performance agains a great defending champion.  Watching Warner walk down the line as the Pats touched the Lombardi...priceless.  In every way, unbelievably sweet.

What's amazing is that starting with SB 31, the Patriots have been to 7 Super Bowls in 19 seasons.  They went:  SB appearance (loss), four years missing, SB appearance (win), one year missing, SB appearance (win), SB appearance (win), two years missing, SB appearance (loss), three years missing, SB appearance (loss), two years missing, SB appearance (win).

So since 1997, this team has not gone more than four straight years between Super Bowl appearances.  That's incredible.

Don't forget they could have one more appearance (and a SB win for sure) had they not blown it against the Colts in the AFCCG.

Could you imagine Brady with 5 rings and Peyton with none? Holy shit.

Hell, it's absurd that only a handful of plays and some shitty luck is all that's stood between Tom and 7 rings.

Yes. But consider that a pretty big weight lifted from their shoulders last month. The 4th was the defining one. It got the HC and QB to top rung, indisputably. It's house money now.

It's helpful in that regard that Kraft, Belichick and Brady won the Super Bowl and are still totally pissed off.  Oh and another angle:

Do any of you recall the video taken by a fan from the exact opposite angle? It was on Deadspin. I assume a link was posted in one of our threads, but if so I missed it.

In any case, this video demonstrates more than any other I have seen that the play unfolded at lighting speed. Butler's recognition was instantaneous. And even then he broke for a ball like a lightning bolt, and had to.

Just remarkable.

It's linked to in the "links" thread- and I think it's the best video of the play, hands-down. It shows the best view of the play from start to finish and how he broke immediately to exactly the perfect spot. What it also has is the instant reaction of the crowd- both sound and visual, which you don't really get from many of the other shots. It's just incredible.

Me, I've been floating around all month. Just this morning I offered to run to Walmart so the wife wouldn't have to go- we needed just a few things, so I went pretty early to avoid any rush or what passes for it out here in the desert. As luck would have it, as I passed the electronics department an NFL Network promo video came onto all the tv's and showed the SB highlights. I just stood there and soaked it all in, with a big smile.

The biggest thing for me on the play was not only did he recognize it immediately, but he was able to exhibit enough self control to wait juuuuuuuussssstttttt long enough to jump the route as to not tip off Wilson. But not too long to allow the catch or end up with an incomplete pass. A second sooner and he might pull it down and not throw it. A second later and maybe it's just third down. Just such an amazing play and it must have been incredibly hard for him to not go too soon out of anticipation.

AND he has to take that hard shot right as the ball arrives and not have it jostle his arm and have the ball come loose (and end up landing in Wilson's arms for the craziest TD in NFL history).

Door #1. Thanks for posting it. The play is still ridiculous.
The added comments above are exactly right. Add extraordinary body control and precision to the timing, anticipation and athleticism.
One of the parts I love about that video (ok maybe 30th on the list) is watching Tom Hill (the side judge, no. 97) calmly strolling up field to take his position on the change of possession like it's a pre-season scrimmage in August. Ok, that happened, next play. The next time we get one of those threads about Roger telling the officials to make X team win, we should pull that out. I think these guys have a sense of the moment, sure, and they want to do a good job on the big stage (and surely sometimes make mistakes trying to call a very fast moving game), but in the end they really don't give a fuck who wins. In the moment they are as in the zone as the athletes and the best ones have a very Belichickian attitude -- do your job, forget about what's in the past that you can't control and get ready for the next play.

The part where Butler manages to make the catch during a perfectly timed and severe bump in the biggest moment imaginable is really cool too.

A second before the ball is snapped, it looks like Butler is securing his chin-strap.  I find this little detail fascinating, it seems so nonchalant.  It's probably an unconscious thing for him, having done it thousands of times.  In my imagination, I see myself struggling with a small detail like that at a huge moment.  There's also the brief exchange between he and Browner--Butler leans in to sort of check in with Browner, who points to Lockette, as in "you're on him".  A couple of seconds later, boom.

An underrated part of the still photos of the play, even better than in the videos, is the posterization of Lockette.

The poor guy was knocked arse over teakettle and for his sake I hope his NFL career becomes known for something more than having a relatively bit part in The Greatest Play in Super Bowl History.

I spent the month wearing Red Sox and Patriots hats around town.

I was getting into my car in the downtown Portland(OR) mall parking lot and a guy sitting in an Explorer started razzing me about my Red Sox hat. Told me I should go back to Boston, cheaters etc..

I looked at his truck and saw a Seahawks license plate holder and a Univ. of Oregon sticker in the back window. (It looks like a toilet seat). My reply was something like "that's pretty funny coming from a two-time loser", he shut up right away.

I've spent my month smiling with every mention of the Super Bowl.  I've had to put up with a small ration of shit from a few jealous fans of other teams trying to get under my skin with Deflategate references, but I've laughed them off - that crap literally has zero effect.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks and their fans have to endure the latest ESPN faux controversy after Marshawn Lynch's comments over the weekend that he was expecting the ball on that play.  Sure is nice to be on the winning side of a controversial play that gets shown over and over on the WWL.   :q:

I noticed that too, and assume it's when he told Browner to "hit him good" meaning he knew what would be the call.

The cradle of the game.
After a solid month of watching that replay, a few other things come to mind. Butler's back is toward the goal line camera, so you really couldn't see the pick clearly as it happened live, yet Al Michaels called it a pick right away. I wonder if he had a better view or camera angle to watch. That and Browner's immediate signal were the only live cues that the ball was intercepted. Also, considering how much receiver contact Butler caused, I was a little surprised how easily Wilson, Carroll and everyone else just accepted that there wasn't a flag. I know the rule, but there wasn't even a hint of protest. Finally, if Hightower's contact with the ball post-interception caused Butler to drop it and fall on it at the 1 yard line, what's the call? Did Butler make enough of a football move by running forward?

I think it would've stood if the ball popped out. Butler catches it as he slams into the receiver, falls back into the endzone, gets a firm hold on the ball, plants his feet, and dives forward. I feel like possession was well established by the time Hightower tried to help him to the ground.

Denver, only physically
Part of my thinking self-assignment for February was to wonder why I had devoted such inordinate attention to figuring out whom to root for in the Miami/Denver game some weeks earlier.  Would I root for the Dolphins so as to improve our chances for first round bye or even HFA if we would be so fortunate as to win the Division?  Or, would I root for the Broncos so as to improve our chances for just winning the Division?  All that cogitation brought me back to the quotation on the plaque that hung on my parents' dining room wall: "Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday, and all is well."  My main pragmatic activity for the month was gathering my tax information for 2014 so that my CPA could prepare my tax returns via Turbo-Tax which I'm still too computer-scared to personally use - such gathering of information by hand I refer to as "MasTurbo-Taxing."

Yeah, catch fumble is how I see it, if the ball comes out, but once they get under the hood, who knows? One other interesting minor point. Lockette does a 270 and Butler actually comes down on the backs of his legs, which is what makes him down by contact. But for that, it's still a live play once he gets on the ground and fumble is still a theoretical possibility if he goofs and assumes the college rule. I don't know what happened to the ball in the dogpile though.

Here
I have one of those Bop speaker things. Every morning I stick it to the shower tiles and throw on some highlights, or replay that Vine of Brady screaming over and over. I've probably seen or heard that Vine on loop 5,000 times. I also enjoy the fan reactions, and my friends and I are all upset we didn't tape ours. We went pretty nuts. Oh well.
