deep inside Guido territory

Brett Brown will return as the Philadelphia 76ers coach next season, managing partner Josh Harris told ESPN on Monday night. Harris, Brown and GM Elton Brand met today to discuss offseason priorities, including draft and free agency.

I don’t think the assessment about Harris is right. If they max Butler and rescind their Bird rights on Harris, they’re cooked because they both don’t have the cap space (they can go into luxury tax territory to keep their own) and they’re not going to find a better player at what they’d get for Harris.

As someone much wiser explained to me, they’re going to max Jimmy and the rest of the chips (max Harris, return of JJ) will fall. There’s no way they made these trades this year so that they could throttle themselves going forward. It seems they knew and are okay with getting hit with the luxury tax bill, which should get bigger with Ben’s new contract next year. It’s going to be 21-25-23-33 for the next 4-5 years.

Anything's possible, but Simmons isn't in the same universe as Kawhi when it comes to shooting.
I apologize in advance for the snip, but I couldn’t resist. This is one of the funniest or most obvious things ever written. I’ve tried to envision Ben actually taking a shot from 12 feet out and I just can’t do it.

Edit: To be clear, I understand the context of your response and fully agree. Ben’s incompetence as a shooter of a basketball is great, and otherworldly when compared with his court vision and passing ability. Humans may never figure this out. Why can’t he just pretend he’s passing to someone who’s inside the hoop?!?

The real issue is why Simmons hasn't worked like hell to develop a shot. There's been no improvement that I can see since LSU.

You think Tobias Harris is happy being the 3rd or 4th option in Philly? I don’t. I bet the Sixers would like him back. I’m guessing he’ll look for better opportunities, such as Brooklyn.

I have no idea what truly goes through the mind of Tobias Harris, but I will guess he likes the idea of playing for a team that will annually have a shot at a title. That’s truly a hunch, but not an unreasonable one I hunk. I suspect he likes the idea of the extra year the Sixers can give him at $33M even more. Call me crazy, but 5/188 sounds better than 4/150 (or whatever the difference is; the NBA cap is confusing). Not that I put much stock into what I’m about to write next, but Harris doesn’t strike me as a highly egotistical person.

The argument made to me was more from the team’s point of view, and it fairly assumes Butler and Harris would not have an objection to a return. I asked why they wouldn’t just try to sign Butler and look to FA for a replacement over Harris (the fact that they surrendered assets to get him is beside the point now). It was suggested to me that it’s not that simple because a team cannot simply exceed the cap for any player, but they can for one for whom they retain the rights. So to sign Butler means they have no room for a non-Sixer FA, but they do for Harris, assuming they are willing to pay luxury tax - which they obviously are. That was my friend’s explanation. He seems like he knows what he’s talking about. I’m open to other assessments.

Your friend is right. The way for Philly to maximize their talent is to retain Butler and Harris. Doing so will require ownership to pay some serious coin. It’s quite possible that this happens but I wouldn’t be surprised if Harris left for a chance to be a top 1-2 scoring option again. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

One reason Brooklyn specifically seems like it could be a strong possibility for Harris is he went to high school in Long Island.
