A few days early, but the league year is about to pick up. Tons of notable unsigned RFA’s as camps open up in the next few weeks.

Anyways, dicey subject to start, but the league announced today that they are declining an option to re-Open the CBA. The PA has until 9/15 to re-Open it. If they do that, then the CBA will be expiring after this season.

They’ve had 4 work stoppages in a row so I’ll believe it when I see it, but apparently there have been some quiet, promising negotiations. Friedman hinting that a new deal could be done before the 15th, or they could mutually agree to move the PA opt-out back.

I guess something to keep an eye on, but I’ll never give them the benefit of the doubt on this. I’ll believe it when I see it.

"This is the first time in my life that I've felt unsure of my aspirations with regards to hockey,"
said Williams. "For as long as I can remember, my whole off-season until this point has been hockey and doing what was necessary to prepare for the upcoming season. Because of my current indecision, and without the type of mental and physical commitment that I'm accustomed to having, I've decided to step away from the game.

"It's important to me that the focus of attention is on the current, very talented group the Carolina Hurricanes have assembled, as they prepare to build on the momentum and growth we established last season."

Carolina is going to be a beast for the next 5 years. For all the shit Gardiner got in Toronto, he’s a very very good hockey player.

Help me understand what's happening with the Leafs and the cap. CapFriendly says they're at almost $95M against the cap of $81.5M; the $95 includes it seems $13.3M in LTIR, and $1.2M in retained salary from Kessel. So, what I understand is that they enter the season with essentially no flexibility. Any additional LTIR that requires a call up will put them over the year end salary cap. Is this right? What happens if they go over the year end cap?

Mismanagement. But seriously, if they are over the cap on Day 1 they have to waive whoever they have to get complaint. I think the rule literally says they’re not allowed to play games until they’re cap compliant.

Horton and Clarkson are on LTIR and since it is career ending they don’t have to be cap compliant day 1 with those 2 to do so, they just stay there. That is like $11 million. They won’t be able to carry a full 23 man roster. They’ll waive som min salary guys, then put Dermott and Hyman on LTIR and boom, cap compliant with some wiggle room for callups.

Back to the CBA, the PA will announce today if they are re-opening the CBA. If they do, the CBA expires at the end of this season. If they do not, we’re good through 2022.

McKenzie has a lengthy thread on the ins and the outs of it so I won’t post the whole thing. Essentially they’ve been negotiating for a while now. Apparently they have made progress but aren’t all the way there. League apparently doesn’t want another lockout. If the players re-open it, they run the risk of the league reverting back into hardliners. If they don’t re-open they’d be taking the league at its word that they’ll continue negotiating in good faith with 3-years left on the current deal.

Cap friendly has them at 23. They will likely only keep a 21 man roster, LTIR Hyman and Dermott and be ok. It's not usually a great move to set the market for free agents, RFA centers and RFA wingers in consecutive offseasons. The leafs are good but they don't strike me as nearly good enough and will likely lose Muzzin and Barrie next year. They currently have $68.6m committed next year to 11 players. They need 5 D and they have a bottom 3rd farm system (though their top 2 prospects are D). Dubas is an interesting exec. I don't really get the "go all in" move with THIS team but he's certainly earned his salary this offseason.

The Hockeyville pre-season game was played tonight. Just like two years ago, because the arena in Renous, NB, is too small for a game like this, the festivities were held in Renous but the game was in Bathurst, 120 km away (a bit more distance than 2 years ago, when O'Leary, PEI, won the Hockeyville contest, but the game was played about 60 km away here in Summerside).

Anyway, here's a quick story about the tragedy that led to the Hockeyville bid.

I think it's a good deal for a whole bunch of reasons, but Chabot's already a stud, IMO. Even if he only stays about as good as he is now, that's not a bad deal.

CAR trades Justin Faulk to STL for Joel Edmundson, Dominik Bokk, 2021 7th round pick. STL also extends Faulk form. 7-years, $6.5 mm AAV.

Bokk was the 25th overall pick in 2018, Pronman at the Athletic had him as STL’s #2 prospect and #50 overall.

That’s a Krug template both for trade expectations (which I think is a loooonnng shot) and the Faulk extension.

Canes trade Faulk to Blues for Edmundson and Bokk followed by Faulk signing 7/45.5 extension (6.5 AAV).

The points go to cshea for the extra detail. @NYCSox you get the home game, thanks for playing.

I’m amused by the Leafs paying $1.65 million more to Marner than what the Avs are paying Rantanen. Jets also get Laine and Connor in with juuuust enough leftover to squeeze in Byfuglien is he chooses to return.

So with all the RFA drama nobody signifivsnf will end up missing games. The only 2 left are guys with trade demands- Honka in Dallas and Puljujarvi in Edmonton. Puljujarvi is playing in Finland while awaiting a trade.
