well, Mike Fiers probably isn't starting a playoff game. at least, I hope not for their sake.
If they choose Manaea or Bassitt to start the wild card game and lose, he won't, but... he's basically been their best starter over the course of the year.

Bruce Bochy has managed from 1995-2019. His career record is 1995-2019.

Astro magic waning? Wade Miley can't finish the first inning for the second start in a row.

Meanwhile, Acuna robbed a HR, but while celebrating it came out of his glove before he showed complete control... and it turned into an inside the parker HR.

A's with some revenge tonight, up 15-2 with no outs in the 4th. Miley got knocked out in the 1st for the second straight game, nice to see him reverting to the Wade we all know.

all the A's starters have at least two hits, first time since 1908 for them (and I imagine this is an extremely rare feat anyways).

Kudos to the Astros for scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth in their game against Oakland and lose by a score of 21-7.

The Yelich injury is a bummer. Trout is better, but I find Yelich more compelling to watch play. Baseball needs stars and it’s a blow to lose Yelich for the rest of the season.

Speaking of guys who are fun to watch, Francisco Lindor becomes the 2nd shortstop in history to put up three 30 HR seasons before the age of 26 (A-Rod, of course, being the other). Not bad considering his power potential was the biggest doubt about him when he was drafted.

Huge blow, for Milwaukee and baseball. I love watching him it, it's a damn shame.

Miley will likely be asked to start one game in a seven game series, and would be available out of the pen the rest of the time. His regression doesn’t do much too hurt the Astros chances in October.

Rays Rangers is 7-7 in the middle of the 2nd. tha'ts pretty wild.

I also find the Rangers' schedule with an imbalanced quirk - Rays just visiting now, their final homestand is against the Red Sox and Yankees. that's a lot of AL East backload.

Rays are 11-1 over the last dozen games. They start off with 2 in top of the 1st against TEX tonight, but then give up 7 in bottom of 1st. Bummer. But then score 5 in top of the 2nd! 7-7 after 2. This team has some fight to it. Have to like the way they are peaking at the right time of year. Glasnow back now. Snell back soon, Chirinos back soon, Lowe back soon.......

"As it turns out, the right time of year to peak is October."

The Dodgers rotation is trending in the wrong direction heading into the postseason. While they still have the best ERA in baseball, LA has a 4.65 ERA since August 15. Kershaw and Ryu have been particularly bad, with Ryu posting a 9.95 ERA in his last four starts.

The Dodgers finally get Rich Hill back tonight, so that could help.

Giolito just struck out 8 guys in a row, new White Sox club record.

I gave up on the Mets too soon. 4 game sweep of the Diamondbacks. 2 games behind Cubs and Brewers for WC2 with 16 to go.

Remaining schedule:

Cubs (78-68): Pirates (3), Reds (3), Cardinals (4), @ Pirates (3) and @ Cardinals (3)

Brewers (78-68): @ Cardinals (3), Padres (4), Pirates (3), @ Reds (3) and @ Rockies (3)

Mets (76-70): Dodgers (3), @ Rockies (3), @ Reds (3), Marlins (4) and Braves (3)

Phillies (75-70): Braves, Red Sox (2), @ Braves (3), @ Indians (3), @ Nationals (5!) and Marlins (3)

That 11 game road trip for the Phillies is brutal.

Cubs should be able to take care of business and earn a playoff spot. If they struggle with the Cardinals, then the Mets have a soft last week since the last weekend will likely be meaningless for the Braves.

In a shocking turn of events Rich Hill made it through 2 outs then left the game with an injury. Left knee this time.

I wouldn’t put Washington above the fray either - they have Atl, Cle, plus that 5 game
Series with Philly - and they’re only 3 up on Chicago and Milwaukee. They’ve been doing well of late, but a 3-7 stretch could see them get passed easily

The Turtle is hilarious, made a running catch into foul territory along the 3B line with his hat in his throwing hand.

Jon Lester gave up 4 runs in the top of the 1st, the Cubs have scored 5 in the bottom of the inning on three HRs, including young Nico Hoerner's first career one.

It's an unfortunate result of the 2-game home-and-home interleague series. I've seen it with a few other teams over the summer, but presume everyone has done it once this season.

...Jake Odorizzi was 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 4 starts against Cleveland this year, but he immediately blew a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning tonight. It would take an epic meltdown for the Twins to lose the AL Central, because they play nothing but the dreck of the league after this weekend, but the Indians would be a ½ game out with a sweep. If they can take it tonight with Civale on the mound, they have Clevinger and Bieber starting the next two.

d'Arnaud with a bases-loaded double to put the Rays up 3-0 on LAA in the 6th. A's continuing to roll, up 8-5 on Rangers in the 7th.

Slight difference in parity between the leagues this year with most teams having 13 or 14 games left to play. In the AL 13 of 15 teams have already determined whether they'll have a winning or losing season. In the NL only 6 teams have guaranteed that so far.

Ryan Braun keeps the Brewers playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 2 out Grand Slam in the Top of the 9th to give the Brewers a 7-4 lead.

All of a sudden, the Cardinals lead over the Cubs in the Central is down to 2 games.

Cubs sweep the Pirates scoring 17,14 and 16.

The A's are a juggernaut. Race seems to be turning into Indians/Rays for the final spot. Rays have a tougher schedule and are prone to periods of quiet bats. I have a bad feeling.

The Seattle Mariners, as of today, also have a record of 1995-2019 since 1995.
The Mariners were the 9th team to which this kind of stat applies:

1) As of April 17th, 2009, the Twins had gone 1984-2009 from 1984-2009.
2) As of June 15th, 2006, the Indians had gone 1981-2006 from 1981-2006.
3) As of May 30th, 2001, the Expos had gone 1976-2001 from 1976-2001.
4) As of June 4th, 1998, the White Sox had gone 1973-1998 from 1973-1998.
5) As of September 9th, 1992, the Twins had gone 1968-1992 from 1968-1992.
6) As of September 2nd, 1992, the Astros had gone 1968-1992 from 1968-1992.
7) After the first game of their July 14th, 1940 doubleheader, the Dodgers had gone 1915-1940 from 1915-1940.
8) As of July 5th, 1928, the Red Sox had gone 1903-1928 from 1903-1928.

"Sam Hilliard, a rookie hitting .195 in 17 games entering today, has homered off Noah Syndergaard twice.

Rockies 2, Mets 1, bottom 4"

The cool thing about this is that both Hilliard and Syndergaard are from Mansfield, TX, a year and a half apart.

Will anyone eventually cross the plate in Oakland today? The Royals and A's are in the 11th inning looking for their first run. The A's just doubled their hit total in the 10th but still failed to score. The two teams have combined for 7 hits, 3 walks and 28 K's. All-time greats Homer Baily and Danny Duffy each pitched 7 scoreless innings.

Yasiel Puig drives one off the right field wall for his 4th hit of the night and a walk-off in the 10th for Cleveland, 2-1. For the next hour or so they'll be tied with Tampa Bay for the final wild card spot. The Rays and Dodgers are tied 3-3 in the 5th. This is Cleveland's 16th consecutive win against the Tigers this year. If they beat them again on Thursday it will tie a franchise record with the 1954 team that beat Baltimore 17 straight times.
