There are two playoff locks right now in the NL (CHC/WAS) and then six teams going for the other three spots (LAD/SFG/STL/PIT/NYM/MIA). If the Padres hold on against the Dodgers (4-2 in the 8th) all six of that second group will have lost tonight, that's tough to do.

Matt Shoemaker got hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Kyle Seager today. Walked off with the help of trainers. Ball came off the bat at 105mph.

I was having too much fun yesterday, obviously, as I was sure Russell Martin got tossed when I saw Gibby rushing out to 'have his back'. Can't beat Tampa with a 2 run homer if you're on the bench!

Angels announce that Matt Shoemaker had successful emergency surgery Sunday night to stop internal bleeding in his head area after getting hit with a line drive Sunday. Hopeful he can leave the hospital Tuesday or Wednesday. And expected to make full recovery. But his season is obviously over.

Dozier going nuts. 9 hr in last 8 games, including one tonight (so far) and 3 yesterday. Up to 39 on the year, 2 behind Trumbo.

AL record for HR by a 2b: Soriano 39

31 of those 39 are since June 25, 31 HRs in his last 267 ABs. Crazy.

Pirates closer gave up HR, 2B, HR, HR with 2 outs in 9th for their 8th straight loss. Hurdle knew when the game was over the season was cooked following that one.

San Francisco blew a 5-3 lead in the 9th and lost to Colorado last night.

They are now 17-32 since the ASB and are 5 games behind the Dodgers.
Forget about the Dodgers, they're only 1/2 game ahead of STL and NYM in the wild card race. Their team OPS for September is .486.

Bizarre incident in Astros / Indians game just now.

Bases loaded, pitch in the dirt by Paulinho that Ramirez checked his swing on but still managed to hit the ball to the backstop. The umpire says nothing, the Astros catcher is looking at the ump asking why he's not called a foul ball, meanwhile Lindor & Napoli run around to score.

And none of the umps saw the foul ball, it's been scored as a wild pitch and 2 runs scored.

The Houston manager didn't exactly go nuts - as I would have done - but he's been ejected anyway. The play isn;t reviewable so it's the umps call and they've screwed up big time.

And the HP ump was Jim Joyce who, having had time during the current rain delay to see the bat hit the ball, is probably writing up his latest apology

Outside of the dramatic change of direction for the ball, how the hell did Joyce not hear it hit the bat?

So much weirdness there.

I'm really surprised that's not a reviewable call; I don't really get the distinction between that and hit by pitches (which are reviewable). I completely understand ball/strike not being reviewable, but 'did the batter hit the pitch or not' seems like a no brainer.

I mean that's just a run on a blown call - I was going to complain that he should've just gone after it and not bitched at the umpire until watching the video, but with the way that went off the bat there's no way that they could've gotten to that ball to stop a run from scoring.

Gary Sanchez had a catcher's interference against Encarnacion the other night that none of the umps saw, and that also wasn't reviewable. They probably need to review what's reviewable again in the offseason.

Joyce comments after the game (but before seeing the play)

"We did not have the ball hitting the bat," Joyce said. "Me originally, and then I went to each crew member and asked them the same thing. If any of them had it hitting the bat, I would have turned around and called a foul ball. My partners couldn't help me on it."

Joyce explained he called time because he was discussing the play with Castro and wanted to stop the action on the field.

"I have not seen the play yet," Joyce said. "I will be looking at it tonight, you can bank on that."

This may be the biggest screwup of a screwed up play.

There is still a runner out there on the bases and the ball is supposedly still in play and rolling around at the backstop (as no foul was called). How is Joyce calling time in the middle of a play to discuss things with a player?

So, apparently Andrew Cashner would consider re-signing with the Marlins but only if they revise the team policy against beards.

Despite not enforcing the ban in 2014 or 2015, manager Don Mattingly says he plans to enforce the policy because “it makes us more disciplined.”

Somewhere, the ghost of George Steinbrenner is smiling.

"I had a player discussing with me what had happened and he was emphatic about it," Joyce told a pool reporter after the game. "I'm not going to let bases loaded, keep rolling. To use a little bit of common sense and some fair play on that one, I wanted to call time and figure out what had happened."

I guess now we know why Stephen Strasburg was willing to sign mid season for way less than he would have gotten on the open market if he wasn't going to miss the rest of the season with an injury that most often leads to further suck before eventual admission that you need Tommy John Surgery. Sad. Might never see him pitch again. Or he'll be Daniel Hudson or Kris Medlen bouncing between middle relief and the DL.

In San Fran, the Giants entered the 9th inning with a 4-1 lead over the Padres. Rookie second baseman Ryan Schimpf hit a 3 run HR with 2 outs and 2 strikes, (his 19th), to make it 6-4 Padres. Game over, Padres win!

Schimpf is 28 years old and did not debut till June 14. He is batting under .230 but his OPS is over .900.
Jake Smith, a former Giants grounds keeper got his 1st big league win in relief.

Lester is 7-0 with a 1.02 ERA over his last 9 starts, has a 1.47 ERA since the all star break, and for the season is 17-4 with a 2.40, and his WHIP is 1.02. Would love to see him continue this and maybe get a Cy Young.

Miguel Cabrera just hit a homer that bounced off the top of the wall in left center at Comerica. Tigers up 7-6 over Minny in the 7th.

Interesting to see which bad teams like playing spoiler this time of year.

San Diego just swept a 3 game series at San Francisco
TB just won 2 of 3 at Toronto
Oakland has won the first two games of a 4 game series in KC
Minnesota beat up Detroit in Detroit last night
Oakland shut out KC 8-0 tonight. KC is toast.

The Verlander/Carrasco duel lasts precisely one swing, as Kinsler lines a single off Carrasco's finger and he's pulled. 5 innings later, the Verlander/Cleveland bullpen duel remains scoreless, and Verlander has something special going on.

Yup, that will make 4 years running (and 5 out of 6) where the WS champs miss the playoffs the following season.
But-but I thought KC had invented a whole new way to try to play baseball that only they truly understood and practiced. How could this happen?! Or, maybe it's really hard to be a top team when your starting pitching is mediocre.

I think it's hard to go to the WS three straight years, regardless of your playing style

I think this is more you not being capable of understanding "this team is really good" doesn't have to suggest the bolded.

Or: what E5 said.
