September Call-ups - Who ya got?

Summer vacation is winding down and the calendar will soon turn to autumn. MLB teams can no longer call up half their upper minors roster; they are limited to 2. So who ya got? I'm guessing Bello and Casas (or Belllllo and Casssas if you prefer). I'd love to see Valdez but only 2 allowed.

What are the new rules to September call ups? Is it the roster only expands by 2 players and they have to be prospects? Wouldn't Bello not count since he's already spent time with the club if he took another player's roster spot?

They certainly don't have to be "prospects". They can be anyone on the 40-man roster. The only new rule is the limit to 28 as opposed to allowing all 40 players on the 40-man roster to be active at once.

I'll go Paxton and Bello. If there is a positional injury they can shuttle guys in and out. Seabold could be an emergency length guy.

I think arms are more important than platoon bats and Casas would be an awkward fit. As much as I'd like to see Valdez, there aren't really opportunities for him without injuries because he doesn't have a position. You'd be bringing a rookie up to be a pinch hitter. I think he's better served as a cheap JDM replacement next season.

I'm wondering how injuries are going to factor into this. My guess is a lot - if Story doesn't look like he's ready, for example, do you bring up Valdez? How does that change the calculus?

I don't think it's going to be any two specific players. They're going to treat the extra spots the same way they did in April. They'll add a pitcher and a position player initially because I believe the roster still has to be balanced, then they'll shuffle guys on and off as necessary.

And whether they're in it or out of it will likely affect the decision. I really hoep thy're still in it, but if not, I'd love to see Valdez as a potential DH/utility IF to have a better idea for 2023.

I'd like that too, but I'm not too sure who to DFA to get him on the 40 man roster. But it can be done.....

How about Franchy? He is out of options after this season, so he's headed for a DFA this winter anyway. It's not like he's got a likely role for the last six weeks that Valdez couldn't fill. It's not as though Franchy has set a high bar.

They’ve got a lot of guys they could DFA. Familia, Ort, Plawecki, Franchy, Davis seem eminently fungible. They will need to potentially open up a spot if Paxton returns, too.

He's hitting .872 at AAA since his demotion. Unless they think they've got a fix for him, they may as well trade him to a cost-conscious non-contending team for a low-minors lottery ticket or two. Frees up the 40 man, gets you maybe-perhaps-something in return.

Given Bello's struggles in the majors wouldn't be wise to keep him down and allow him to continue to develop his skills in the minors?

That's possible. It's just a question of whether they want to wait until this winter when they can make that trade, or do they want the roster spot sooner. He's not the only expendable guy they have, but it seems like he'd be the best one-for-one exchange for Valdez given what each could potentially contribute.

I think that's a fair way to look at their bat-upside overlap. Franchy's a decent OF with a good arm. So he may have some value to a team that's thin there and believes they can fix him.

They'll probably keep Plawecki over Wong if they're still mathematically in it. Experience with the staff and all that. But if McGuire shows he can take over catching and Plawecki continues not to hit. . .

Ort. . .they control him, and he has good AAA numbers. But he's 30 and hasn't been effective at the ML level. He might be the last to go of this group, actually.

They'll probably hold onto J.Davis for a bit, as he is OF depth, has actually hit a bit, has options, and because they could control him for a few years if they want to. If Hernandez is back full-time and Refsnyder is healthy his potential role diminishes quite a bit.

Familia. . .they either think they can fix him or he is just an innings eating arm they grabbed for a week as a break-glass option. He signed on August 9 and they haven't used the guy once since then. So. . .I don't know what his role is. If it's break-glass he's the first one gone.

Franchy - dinged, to a degree redundant.

Story and Paxton. And hopefully Josh Taylor, but I have no clue what's up with him, he hasn't pitched in over a month.
