Just a head scratching decision to start Buehrle today after he threw 100+ pitches on Friday when home field advantage is still in play.

Maybe they're content to play the AL West champ in the LDS and take their chances beating the Royals without home field in Game 7?

Which is not that wise considering how much better the Jays and Royals are at home.  KC is probably going to win today anyway, so the loss today does not matter much for Toronto.

Since Buerhle is so preoccupied with his own personal stats, he will be happy to know 0 of the 8 runs he gave up today were earned.  He lowered his ERA in his final career appearance.

Dustin Ackley playing a sub-professional brand of 2B in Baltimore. 3-1 Birds, with bases loaded vs Capuano...

Boston made a fatal mistake getting rid of Adrian Beltre. I miss him so much.
Um...

Blake Swihart (Red Sox-1) - Pick from Rangers as compensation for Free Agent Adrian Beltre

Jackie Bradley (Red Sox-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Adrian Beltre

Parra knocks two in, MFY down 5-1.

Damnit, I had seats at the Toilet for Tuesday. Root for the Yankees one damn time....

Well, he will come in second to Cabrera
Will Cabrera qualify?

I mean, he's pretty obviously the best hitter in the AL, but the devil's in the details....

Texas is seemingly putting away the division here, but can't say that given Texas' recent history ...
Yankees losing Wild Card Game at home is a schadenfantastic possibility

Man. A little bit of a crushing end for the Angels here -- 6 runs in the 7th. Ouch.

Now the Rangers are up 9-2 and cruising to the AL West title.

edit: as others have said, the last drama is basically whether it will be HOU @ NYY or NYY @ HOU. Meh. Add me to the group that would find it even sweeter for the Yankees to lose at home.

Can't wait for the playoffs this year, especially in the NL.

That's the strongest group of playoff teams I can remember. The 100 win Cardinals, the Grienke/Kershaw Dodgers, the deGrom/Harvey/Thor Mets, and those great Cubs and Pirates teams. That's going to be some incredible baseball, and we don't even have to root against the ones we worry are most dangerous.

Texas clinches the west.

C'mon, Houston!
Texas's reward? A trip to Toronto and David Price!

Still, congrats to the Rangers. No one gave them a chance going in to this season, and a lot of people ridiculed their trade for Hamels as wishcasting. That's a fun team they have.

Right, sorry. Last I looked he seemed on pace to take it with the Gwynn rule but he's not close to qualifying.

Not sure what you guys are talking about, it's 502 PAs to qualify for the batting title, not 502 ABs. Cabrera qualified a few days ago and will win his fourth batting title in five years (especially amazing for a slow RHB).

I think he does qualify. The rule is 502 plate appearances, and Cabrera was at 511 coming into today's game.

Edit: beaten by seconds

It's kind of shocking how little home field advantage has mattered in the playoffs in recent years. Teams with the better record have a losing record not only in series overall, but also in deciding games. Not counting single-game wild cards, home teams have gone 5-8 in the last five seasons in series that went the distance (5 or 7 games).

Chris Davis with his 47th HR, probably his last AB ever for BAL. He's going to get paid big, and then that team will almost certainly regret it within a year or two, like most huge FA deals these days.

The AL wild card game comes down to one thing: How effective will Keuchel be on three days rest.

Yep, and honestly NY hasn't been able to hit any lefties lately, let alone one as good as him. People always underestimate how few guys are effective on three days rest, though, even most aces can't do it.

I don't know why Houston didn't pull keuchel earlier on Friday in preparation for Tuesday. He pitched the bottom of the 6th with a 10 run lead.
I was scratching my head over that decision, too. Makes no sense leaving him in once the game is a blowout when you need him again on Tuesday.

In their slight defense, it was far from clear they'd definitely be in the playoffs at that point and they needed that win, and that game was 7-2 with two outs and no one on in the top of the 6th before HOU scored three more with two outs, and their bullpen has been awful down the stretch.

I agree anyway, just saying it's not quite as obvious a dumb decision as it looks.
