The Dodgers have DFA'd Mat Latos.

Wow, what a fall. He's not even 28 years old. I have to imagine he gets some kind of Masterson-like pillow contract next year.

No real decline in peripherals or velocity. Bad luck and an abnormally low LOB% (62.6%) seem to be the culprit.

Listening on the radio. Cubs trail the Cards by a run in the ninth.

PR Quintin Berry caught stealing for the first time of his career by Tony Cruz.

Mets soon to clinch at least a tie for the division. Going to be tough to Mets it up now.

This Astros collapse, continuing today, reminds me of the Pirates long slow fade the year before they started their string of playoff appearances

The Pirates might win 100 games and be an underdog in the coin flip game.  Going out in 1 game after winning 100 games would have to be the sickest thing since the 93 Giants won 103 games and didn't even make the playoffs.

Mets clinch the NL East... Will that be the story, or the fact that Harvey went 6+ and almost 100 pitches?

My take on the story is that they won one of the few weakest divisions of all time and two superior teams have to play a single game elimination just to get to the NLDS.

By the way, those two teams (CHC/PIT) won all 13 games they played against the Mets this year. Yes, that's correct.

Maybe they can take inspiration from the 83-win 2006 Cardinals and do to the NL what was done to them back then... (But seriously, unless they can get their starters into the 8th, it's unlikely on the evidence of the last few weeks.)

Robles/Reed/Clippard/Familia all have the capability to be above-average... the rest of the bullpen is atrocious, but in a short series (and especially if Niese and/or Colon can be anywhere serviceable in relief) it's definitely not a strength, but it's not as big of a weakness as it's seemed when they've been trotting out people who are likely not going to be on the playoff roster.

I wouldn't dismiss the current Mets team as an artifact of the NL East - the division title is definitely in part due to beating up on the Braves/Phillies (and the Nationals completely falling apart), and the only reason they were competitive early on was great pitching and good luck, but they've had one of the best offenses in the second half (#1 by WAR & #3 by wRC++) and certainly have the starting pitching to dominate a playoff series. Anything can happen, but I like their chances against LA.

They're a tough team to get a bead on, because not only did they add Cespedes and a few others at the deadline, but they got back D'Arnaud and added Conforto, but at the same time they've built up those gaudy second-half numbers against awful teams. The only above .500 team they've played well against the last few months is WAS, which of course worked out perfectly for them.

I'm not saying they don't have a chance to beat the Dodgers or even win the World Series, I'm just saying that they are very lucky to be in the position they are. They've played all of the AL East teams except TOR since August 1 and have gone 4-7 in those games, not winning any of the four series (0-3-1).

Kinda sad to see all the excitement about Hudson and Zito - Hudson didn't make it out of the second and Zito didn't make it out of the third.

Hudson was pretty clearly hurt (one of the Giants' beat guys said he might not even have been 50%, much less 100%), and Zito is obviously not a major league pitcher anymore.
