Tronna takes a 1-0 lead over Bawlmer on a double by Encarnacion.

ed: and then Pearce hits a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first. Earl Weaver would be proud.

Can the demand for playoff tickets really be that high when the place is half-empty for games in the middle of the pennant race?  This isn't the Braves fans getting spoiled and bored with regular season baseball either, the Royals are in one of only a handful of pennant races they've seen in the past couple of decades  I was there last week for the Sox series and there were large swaths of the stadium that were unfilled.

Pulling for Kershaw's 20th, at Wrigley in a wind blowing out day. 8 - 3  Dodgers but Kershaw is having his 2nd worst outing of the year. Didn't help that Kemp lost an easy pop in the sun and Crawford completely botched a deep fly to left. How many players in the ML, just considering 25 man rosters, 750? Can't think of anyone  I dislike more than Carl Crawford.

Kershaw now with 106 pitches through 5. I thought he'd start the sixth because the Dodgers bullpen got destroyed in Colorado this week. But, he's PH for. Noticed Kershaw with some loud (probably) F-bombs into his glove coming off the mound. Joc Pederson F'd out loud when he struck out PHing, and Lester's not been shy with them lately. The Peavy influence?

Puig with a 3 run bomb. I could hold this lead for Clayton now.

California. Duh.
Yeah, with all the times Kershaw has gone 8 or 9 innings in 1-0 or 2-1 games, it's good to see the Dodgers offense bail him out when he struggles a bit.

Not bad when your second-worst start of the season is giving up 3 runs in 5 innings.

Huge call.  Perez didn't tag up, but apparently it isn't reviewable?

* I guess it is.

And just like that a would-be 2-1 KC lead is a 2-1 Detroit lead

edit: Make that 3-1

They showed later that verlander threw to 3rd to appeal then ausmus came out. The broadcast missed it initially.

According to on-field audio and @Ken_Rosenthal report, the play was not reviewable. But if I am understanding this, Larry Vanover seemed..

DShulman_ESPN Dan Shulman
..to reverse his call based on the replay. Oh boy. If all that is true, #royals have a beef.

Between the horrible bunt decisions by Yost, and Perez forgetting to re-tag, the Royals deserved this. But if it's true that the umps changes a call after looking at replay on a non-reviewable call, it's going to be a mess.

Imagine that happening in the post-season

The Royals now have an insanely bad 25-76 record at home since 2004 when drawing over 30,000. Stay home for the sake of the team, people!

Oh my. Karros via Rosenthal suggesting that the umps reversed the call based on replays shown on the big board at Kaufmann. So the play was not officially "reviewed" per se but umps were able to see the replay and confer anyway.

So, to recap:

Umpires initially allow run to score
Tigers ask for review
MLB tells umpires play was not reviewable
Tigers appeal play at third
Umpire who originally said run was good, changes his call
FOX gets audio of Hanover saying something to the tune of he changed his call based on seeing the replay (on the scoreboard, we know now)
Royals lose by a run

Now, in the end the correct call was made. Perez never re-tagged. But, umm, that's an ugly set of cicumstances

Was the game protested? If so, I bet KC wins the appeal. If not, what a shame.

The Royals final week is brutal... all on the road AND they have to complete that extra innings suspended game (a game they are losing too). At least it's Cleveland and the White Sox.

Spoke after the game with Larry Vanover, the crew chief and third-base umpire. Vanover said that Ausmus came out to challenge that Perez didn't properly tag. Vanover said he was 90 percent sure that the play was not reviewable. But he got on the headsets with New York because he wanted to be "1,000 percent" sure. He was told that the play was not reviewable.
At that point, the umpires still needed to decide the proper call. That is when the crew got back together and walked through the play. Vanover acknowledged that a lot went on in that sequence - the ball was hit, the throw went to second, the ball skirted into left field. He had initially ruled safe after the appeal. But the umpires reached a "consensus of information" that Perez never got back to the bag and was indeed out.
I asked Vanover if the umpires are allowed to look at the video board for help; the replays shown at the park clearly illustrated that Perez had not tagged properly. But Vanover said no, they are not allowed to look at the scoreboard.
Vanover said that Ned Yost also wanted to know how the call was made. Again, Vanover did not give a definitive answer. He just said that the umpires reached a consensus.

Royals officials are in discussions with MLB headquarters to see if they have any recourse in terms of protesting this game.
***
Again, it not the that the call was "wrong," but that the umpires changed the call after seeing the replay on the stadium scoreboard. Audio of the coversation was picked up by FOX.

Doesn't a protest have to be put in before the next pitch?  If that didn't happen, I don't see the Royals having a leg to stand on.

Jerome Williams with his win against the A's today becomes the first pitcher to beat the same team 3 times with 3 different team in one season.

Cleveland did end up winning the suspended game. The Royals got a run across, but they needed two. Deficit is now 2.5.

CJ Wilson obviously feeling sorry for Oakland. 2 singles and 4 walks resulting in 4 runs with 2 out in the first...and he is out of the game.

Sandoval GIDPs on a ball the shortstop (Hanram) backed up on and they still got him easily at first. Goahead run in the tenth would have scored from third if he could run. Do not want this slob in Boston.

The Dodgers have decided to televise the last 6 games on local channel 56 for any of you guys out here in So. Ca. Starts right now with the Giants.

One small step towards those of us who don't have Time Warner being able to enjoy Vin Scully again.  It's been a travesty that so many people in the area haven't been able to watch these games all season.

Fascinating story emerging at Dodger Stadium..If Dan Haren pitches six full innings, a $10 million player option vests for next year..

And he did it, going 7.0.

That is an interesting option vesting very late in the season. But he will get another start on the 28th won't he? So he goes over by an inning and a start rather than just an inning. Unless dodgers do something funky to line up their rotation I guess.

The Dodgers ended up losing in 13, but they were only able to go that far because of this game-saving throw by Yasiel Puig in the 11th:

The Dodgers' magic number remains at 3 with Greinke vs. Bumgarner tonight and Kershaw vs. Hudson tomorrow. The energy at the Ravine was fantastic last night and will only intensify tonight and tomorrow. Can't wait.

I hate to be a beeyotch, but, as one of the Giants announcers pointed out, the crowd didn't really pick up until the fifth inning when the Dodgers first scored and tied it at 2 - 2. Puig's throw was awesome. Later in the game, with the same runner on second, average at best speed Brandon Belt, base hit to left, Belt is sent again and scores easily as Carl Crawford threw the ball to Glendale, some announcer said.   May sound like piling on CC, but he pulled up and played  rookie Susac's hit on one bounce when it looked like he may have been able to catch it.

Agree on Crawford. I thought he definitely had a chance at it. Instead he pulled up, played it on a hop and uncorked a lollipop that was at least 15 feet up the line.

He had zero chance on a catch (unlike a certain game 162 where he definitely did, or at least should have tried) but if you can't throw a slow runner out on a perfect one hop line drive from there then you should be playing shorter to cut off the run. Though I guess for Crawford that would mean deep shortstop. That is abysmal defense.

King Felix doing his Cy young chances no favours. 7 earned runs and out of the game after 4.2, with 2 of his runners still on base with two outs.

EDIT: 8 earned runs total.
