Jack does raise really good points in his statement.

The government are trying to get him to go quietly when they gladly profited off his dealings.

It will be incredibly interesting to see how this plays out ----once it doesn't play out in appeals and head to Privy Court because that could literally take a decade or more.

Elections are in early September and Jack will probably really ramp up the batshittery to drown the ruling coalition in a flood of evidence.

Uh, Jack's gonna get tossed in the back of the Saturday afternoon flight by some US Marshals in the next couple weeks and the T&T government will gladly look the other way when it happens - as long they aren't on the list for extradition.

The idea that he can make it off the island to anywhere but US custody is laughable.

How far is it from T&T to Venezuela?  He should be able to charter a boat pretty easily.

He could try. That boat would not arrive in Venezuela, though.

Alternatively, they could just knock him off.

I'm only half joking. There are some corrupt fuckers running the country.

Seriously though, forcibly dragging him off would end badly for everyone involved. Dude has too many fingers in too many pies.

I'm curious to see if he'll drop the fight if he really thinks they'll kill him.

Come on, you've got to appreciate an ad from an accused corrupt official which has text at the end with the subhead, "have you gotten your fair share?".

We love caricatures.  Jack Warner is like a Trinidadian Donald Trump, with somehow even less intelligence.

It's really not very far at all from the Fox News model and millions of Americans watch that.
Hell millions of Americans watch the History channel specials on Aliens building the pyramids, and secret Illuminati conspiracies and believe every word.

That is incredibly complicated.

The long and the short of it is money and football. He has always been a fixer of sorts. He is as corrupt as anything but he actually gets shit done for the people (or political parties) who ask, and has been doing so for decades. Hell, he propped up Blatter's predecessor.

Calling him Donald Trump is an insult to Jack.

And Trinidadians aren't "lapping it up" or even rooting for him per se, it's just that this is honestly the most corrupt government in a really long time and everyone knows it.

Everyone knows he is corrupt but it was never in anyone's interest to do anything about it or him.

So for them to target Warner and pretend that he didn't personally fund their victories with all his dirty money, is infuriating people. Especially in the case of the embarassment that is the current Prime Minister who is claiming ignorance.

There are money launderers that the U.S. has wanted for almost a decade roaming free as birds around Trinidad right now---so if they wanted to protect him they absolutely could.

Everyone (that isn't the coalition) is basically praying for him to release everything.

Like I said, it is really complicated shit that predates my birth.

Eta: Good lord that got long. My bad, guys.

No, don't apologize. That was really good info. Thanks for going into detail.

Even if it did, as much as Maduro would like to embarrass the USA, why would he pick Jack Warner as the guy to help? The soccer-mad South Americans have been lapping up this story of corrupt oligarchs getting what's coming. It wouldn't be very Bolivarian to give one asylum.

Besides, he's right. Fox feeds its viewers stories of the depravity of the Other to keep them focused on imagined threats. Warner's doing the same thing in a much less sophisticated way.

But he's playing right into Oliver's hands. Warner may be a great fixer/skimmer, but his public appearances are always amateurish. Oliver can buy another six minutes of TV time and mock Warner over the background music, his calling Oliver an American, etc. Warner is wrestling a pig and doesn't realize it.

Oh yeah.
It's sort of legitimizing for Oliver to have an actual news source engaging him like this. Oh and I forgot Warner engaged the Onion too. And you're right no chance Warner comes out on top in this one.

Banks in Switzerland have reported 53 possible acts of money-laundering in the investigation of FIFA's 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests, the country's attorney-general said Wednesday
Michael Lauber said the "suspicious bank relations" were filed to comply with Switzerland's regulations against money laundering.

The federal prosecutor described a "huge and complex" case which targets "criminal mismanagement and money-laundering" in the bidding contests which sent the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar.

Lauber is prepared for either country to be stripped of the hosting rights if new evidence proves wrongdoing.

This statement has to be referring to formal suspicion, right?

Lauber said he "does not exclude" interviewing FIFA President Sepp Blatter and secretary-general Jerome Valcke in the future, though they are not currently under suspicion.
Like, he doesn't have evidence yet that directly incriminates them?  Because how can they not be under suspicion in the ordinary sense (that one suspects, but is not yet in possession of proof, that they may have engaged in corruption)?

That tells me they most likely suspect him but don't have as much evidence as they'd like implicating Sepp.

On Wednesday, Alex Soosay, a senior official at the Asian Football Confederation, stepped down. He had previously been suspended by the AFC amid allegations reported in the local press that he tried to conceal evidence from investigators looking into corruption.
In April, the Malay Mail, a Malaysian newspaper, reported that it had obtained a video, dating from 2012, of an AFC official telling a FIFA investigator that Mr. Soosay had asked him to hide or tamper with documents. Those documents were related to an investigation tied to Mohamed bin Hamman, a former president of the AFC. At the time, the confederation was conducting an audit of itself under Mr. Hamman’s presidency.
In 2012, FIFA banned Mr. Hamman from all soccer-related activity for life, citing ethics violations. He has denied wrongdoing.
The AFC suspended Mr. Soosay in May after it said that it had verified the authenticity of the video reported by the newspaper. Mr. Soosay, a former soccer player from Malaysia who became AFC’s general secretary in 2009, has denied all wrongdoing.

How big was the load in Sepp's diaper when he heard that news? Better, how long does Webb hold out in an American prison, even some remote, gentle, resort prison for white collar criminals such as he, before he sings louder than the lead of Lohengrin?

Interesting that he dropped his opposition to extradition. Does he want to be first in line to cut a deal? Or perhaps he thinks extradition is inevitable and he might as well get moved to the US so he can post bond.
That's if he is even eligible to bond out. He's most likely entered the country on an immigration parole status since he is a foreign national.

Andrew Jennings testified to Congress that he can't find any evidence that FIFA has reserved space for attendees for an EGM to vote on a Blatter replacement.

The last time we heard "FIFA" and "independent" in the same sentence the Garcia Report had been handed off to someone who was basically inner circle FIFA.
