I had no idea who the Honest Men were.

This is an amazing quote from their wikipedia page though:
"In 2016 Ayr were criticised for there shirt release, by painting there new kits onto women with big knockers. Craig Mclurkin was in favour of the move."

The Honest Men are my non-Old Firm side, so named from Ayrshire homeboy Robert Burns's "Tam O'Shanter," in which he proclaimed the city unsurpassed in "honest men and bonnie lasses".

The name alone makes the team worthy of allegiance, but Ayr is also where my mother grew up, most of that side of the family is still there.

My Dad grew up in Kilmarnock and was a Killie fan for most of his young life. Having spent a bit of time with my family that remain there, the rivalry between Killie and Ayr is an intriguing one, I'll tell you that much...and yes, I'm well aware of the complete and utter, derelict shithole Kilmarnock has become since both Massey-Ferguson and Johnny Walkers closed.

As for Rangers, looking like 5 decent signings from Warburton, who knows the English lower-leagues inside-out. The obvious standout is Barton, but Josh Windass from Accrington is a good get - 17 goals from MF last season - as is young Rossiter from Liverpool on loan. There's also talk of getting Steven Taylor from Newcastle to shore up the leaky defence, although I believe Celtic are also interested. Bit of a tug of war possibly, but maybe the Barton-influence, as they played together for the 'Toon, might sway him?

So, Lennon is back in Scottish Football as the new manager of Hibs. I guess he needed to get back into management, but I'm surprised no English Championship side came in for him, it wasn't exactly his fault Bolton had no players, money or anything else to help them stay up.

I've wanted Hibs and Hearts to get stronger for a while now. If Lennon's plan is to hang around at Easter Road for a while and really try and build something, it could be really positive for Scottish football. I know Hibs are pretty tight with the cash, but if they can get promotion, bring players through from the youth set up (the old chestnut), hold on to most of their best players and maybe spend wisely, who knows. 150,000 folks lined the streets of Edinburgh when Hibs had their Scottish Cup Victory Parade. There is a large fan base.

It wasn't that long ago (was it) that Hearts and Hibs both filled out their grounds for home matches.

Absolutely, you can see how the fan base at Hearts were buoyed by the new ownership regime, you've really got to hope that the Scottish Cup win, and a feisty Manager like Lennon, will energise Hibs' fan base in a similar way.

However, another year in the Championship without big games against Rangers, Celtic and, especially, Hearts isn't exactly a tinderbox waiting to fire up said fanbase.

True, but a run to promotion might be, i imagine Hibs and Dundee Utd are favourites for promotion. Raith might have a shot this year.

Anyway, was reading a write up of the last Scotland game v France and the tone of it was that Scotland gave the ball away too much. Old Story. I would love to see some Scottish sides playing a passing game, take a chance, learn to love the ball. Passing and movement are wonderful things. Maybe the mighty Raith can work it into their training drills.

It was striking in the Rangers - Celtic semi, how Rangers, the lower-ranked side, were playing the passing football, whereas Celtic were the long ball bullies. Was that a reflection of the styles of the manager, or the fact that Rangers had a lot of players that were brought up in English "Football" systems - Zelelam at Arsenal etc? I know it's not a reflection on Scottish football, as there weren't a huge quantity of Scottish-qualified players on show, but still?

I have an EPL team (well, actually, they're in the Championship this year, so I guess I don't), and I read what folks say about the Scottish league here and find it interesting. A lot of people already root for Celtic, and I have a soul so I'm not gonna root for fuckin' Rangers, and I like Hearts' shirts more than Hibs.' So Hearts it is. I also found it interesting how they came back from bankruptcy and got back into the SPL after a couple of years in the wilderness.

I mean, I'm an American with no Scottish ancestry at all, nor English for that matter. At some point you make a random choice and go from there.

Get ready: Hearts are hosting the legendary FC Infonet Tallinn on Thursday in the first leg of the first round of Europa League qualifying.

So Hearts and Aberdeen are through to the next round of Europa. Although Aberdeen were far from convincing.

Meanwhile over at Celtic, it's panic stations. Only one signing has materialized. They face a precarious trip to the Lincoln Red Imps tomorrow, a side bursting with 9 internationals no less. The game starts at 7PM local time. I'm taking a narrow 7:1 aggregate win for Celtic over the two legs.

Rumor has it Fletch may be seeing Helen Flanagan sauntering down Sauchiehall Street frequently.... if the rumor is to believed.

God I feel old, every time I see Ryan Christie playing for Celtic, it reminds me I played against his dad when he was at Inverness Caledonian.

The worst result in club history. This makes Artmedia look like a great result. I came home from work a few hours early to watch the replay....luckily someone texted me the final score and saved me from watching it. The players are a disgrace. Most of their opponents had to work their real jobs today prior to the match.

Brendan Rodgers being Brendan Rodgers.

The Red Imps are my few underdog team. I am going to see if any bookies take bets on these guys.

Celtic with 2 quick goals before the 20-minute mark, but that won't make me rest easy.
Calm doon gadgie. The Mighty Celtic have the beating of these upstart Imps.

But fuck me with a broken bottle, the tight arse Celtic board need to spend some decent cash and add some quality to the squad. I don't fancy Celtic's best 11 against anything resembling a decent line up moving forwards.

Lets be honest here besides Celtic who can win the scottish prem league. There is not a whole lot of quality team who have the money like Celtic. Here is an idea could the epl and spl make a deal where the winner of the spl get in a promotion battle with one of promotion candidates from the championship or have a relegation battle with one of the three teams that get the drop kinda like the bundesliga in germany? What are your guy's thoughts just an idea to make the footballing world more interesting?

Celtic scored a stoppage time goal to win their tie against Astana, they're through to the playoff for a spot in the Champions League group stage. Draw is on Friday, they'll play one of the following teams: Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria), Copenhagen (Denmark), Hapoel Be'er Sheva (Israel) or Dundalk (Republic of Ireland). Things looking a bit better than when they were beaten by an off-duty cop a few weeks ago.

The way things are politically in Scotland and Great Britain in general there is no way Celtic or whoever wins the SPL is getting into the English league. A British league might be possible in the distant future but that is so far off it's not worth even thinking about. I've said it before, if Scottish football was competitive, if Aberdeen and Hearts and Hibs (post promotion) could contend, we'd have a half decent league...and we'd be a more attractive proposition from a TV entertainment perspective. But that's a long way off too. The folks that run Scottish footie are not fit for purpose.

The Celtic match t'other day wasnae even on telly. The current SPL TV deal is worth buttons. But there is hope...there's always hope.

In other news, the Helen Flanagan saga may finally over by the looks of things....in Glasgow for a medical apparently.

I was watching some of the Aberdeen V Maribor game in the Europa...that ref was criminal. The Scottish commentator referred to him as a balloon at least twice..and that was too kind. I think he must have been paid off. Of course...this comical own goal did not help matters.

On a personal note...trying to deal with the Celtic ticket office has been a nightmare. It looks like the only game I can attend will be the home game v Motherwell in October.
3 e-mails and only an automated response. However, John Paul Taylor , liaison officer answered my e-mail in a matter of minutes. The game day may change depending on CL or Europa commitments. So...the itinerary and hotel bookings will have to wait until about 3 weeks out.

I know you're all waiting breathlessly with anticipation: I bought a Hearts shirt today. Mostly because it's white and I need a white shirt to play soccer in this fall, but still. Guess I'm officially a fan. I should go learn some of the players' names.
