Celtic recently completed a Treble Treble (3 years in a row of winning the Premiership, the Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup each year), and Neil Lennon was named permanent manager. They'll be competing in the first qualifying round for the 2019-20 Champions League, the draw date is June 18, with the first match to be played the second week in July.

Steven Gerrard will be entering his second year as manager for Rangers.

The NT are in the midst of a Euro2020 qualifying campaign, and Hampden will be hosting Euro2020 matches from Group D for the tournament itself in June of that year.

Here's to another year of scintillating Scottish fitba!

Edouard puts Celtic up 2-1 in the 51'

Sinclair makes it 3 - Celtic should be clean through

Looking up the Glasgow - Sarajevo flight itineraries for fun... good on the folks that made the trip, that is a dreadful journey

Looking forward to the new Season. I think Rangers might win the league. I think Celtic's top brass underestimate Rangers, and overestimate Celtic. I don't think Lennon is the man to take Celtic to a new level. I'm a little worried that it takes less time than before for a decent Celtic player to want to push for a move elsewhere.

Also Scott Brown, loved by Celts an aw that...is shite when it comes to CL league level. He can boss a match against Falkirk but his best is long past him and Celtic have no replacement on the horizon.

It is getting harder and harder for teams outside the big leagues to get into the CL and get a decent draw...it's basically rigged these days, to the detriment of the competition. If Celtic, and when it's their turn Rangers want to compete at CL level, and by compete i mean not be embarrassed, they need more money - and that's only gonna come from a good TV deal. We have the worst in Europe. It was celebrated by the cunts who run Scottish football. That's how we do it over here. But at the end of the day...we do need more money to compete, to hang onto players that one extra season.

I hope Aberdeen get some investment. They play a wierd anti football...be nice to see them get more progressive. Also the Edinburgh teams could use some cash. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland but it's more and more an English City, hence i visit there less and less. God knows why Hibs and Hearts are paupers in a city full of money...I mean Edinburgh is fuckin minted...if we could get some of the English middle classes along to watch the kickabouts that would be good.

As ever, God Bless the USA.

I was happy to see Lennon take over at such short notice given the circumstances. He seemed like the logical choice, however, I would have been more delighted to see him leave this summer. I just don't think he takes Celtic to another level, been there done that. I just don't rate him but happy as always to be proven wrong.

Celtic will do just enough to win the league again, by far the best squad. They do lack a bit of quality though. They have been dismal in the last year or so as far as transfers, but if the whispers are true that Rodgers was making it clear last summer that he wanted out as soon as a suitable offer came along, how much would you want to trust him with the transfer kitty? Plus, of course, he was by no means great at buying talent. Very good coach yes, but transfer wise, not rated highly.

As far as Europe, it's one big protectionist fix. Keep elite teams elite. 19 out of the 32 guaranteed places go to 5 countries. It's a fucking racket. France is one of those countries, when the fuck did a French team win the Champions League? If you don't count that 93 year ( a year where Marseille bribed opposing teams), its been well over 50 years.

Meanwhile, Ajax get to the semi-final this year , have to sell star players and one reason is they are not guaranteed CL games this season. Meanwhile the fucking French get 3. Italy get 4....for fuck sake, the last time an Italian team won was back in 2007. Germany get 4....name another team not called Bayern that's won in recent years. Ajax win the Dutch league, have to qualify, meanwhile the 4th German team can just swan in there. Fucking rigged as Fletch says.

Heading over to the UK in the next few days, going to take in the British open. May try and see the second leg of the Celtic qualifier , don't know yet. I'll be making my services available for Celtic at right back...it's been years since they have had a half decent one, and in the last two years they have failed to find a quality one. The ever incompetent Lustigis now gone. Seriously, how difficult is it to find a semi decent right back? Something I learned today and had no clue...Kierney was born on the Isle of Man.

Celtic were supposed to playing at home the first leg, but to avoid any mishaps and the short notice for getting visas, Sarajevo had to play at home first. I was watching Reporting Scotland recently, I saw that an Orange Walk marcher playng the flute spat and shoved a woman in Glasgow.....stay classy my friend...stay classy. The more things change...the more they stay the same.

Edit: Also, I have trouble buying fizzy Irn Bru, my wife bought me a bottle as a surprise in South Carolina. It was completely flat , also no sell by date.....anywhere. I find this a lot....I have bought some from Amazon, New England , Texas.....almost all flat. As soon as I hit the airport in Scotland I buy a bottle...and all is well...fizzy as fuck.

If you're in Glasgow we could mibbe meet for a quick swallie. I'm no much of a drinker these days, but i'll take a decent pint of Tennants once in a while if the craic is guid.

This trip is more work related ( the golf part), that's why I'm not sure about the Glasgow visit. However, I'm looking at two weeks in November , prices are relatively cheap for flights, plus I'm spending half my time in S. Carolina as opposed to Arizona because we bought a house there, so it's not such a pain in the arse to fly ( avoids 5 hours from Arizona). Tennent's lager is one of my favorites , not because it's particularly any good, but because I can't get it over here and reminds me of my student days. Unfortunately, most of the pubs and hotels in Stornoway are owned by the same person, and they did away with Tennents . Some European shite instead....so my heaviest drinking tends to be in Glasgow or Edinburgh.....plenty of Tennents there. You are right about Edinburgh though..more anglified. I seem to remember when I was a student confusing some Edinburgh students for English ..because of the posh accent. Morningside and all that. But I love Rose Street , particularly the Black Cat . Usually the bars I'm in around Gasgow are out by the airport but I need to remedy that and actually go into the city.

To keep the post related to football....I hear the cries of going for 55 are back...such enthusiasm. In fairness, Stevie G did better than I thought in his first season. But I do think 10 in a row, is a high priority for Dermot Desmond.

If you’ve got a wegmans near you, they usually carry Irn Bru in the international section
Even if I take my SC address the nearest one is in VA, I guess they are more a NE corridor chain. To be clear, it's not a huge problem finding Irn Bru, I can find it in most states, the problem is that they are completely flat...no fizz. About a year ago my wife ordered a 12 pack off Amazon, they were flat and the sell by date was 11 months over. More recently, I can't even find the sell by date any more.... flat.

On the plus side, it's something I can look forward to when I land in Scotland and head straight to the airport Tescos. Well that, the prawn cocktail crisps, chicken masala sandwiches and the 4 pack of the large tubes of Tennents lager. My American wife loves Tescos. I wish they had them here. Unfortunately, since our move to SC, there is an Aldi down the street, she keeps wanting to go there, I hate the place, limited brand names, limited choices, and having to bag all your own shit after checkout, plus only one check out lady no matter how busy the store is....AND screwing around with quarters for the carts, I don't carry cash. UGH...fuck Aldi.

Should've also added that the ones I've gotten from there have been fresh / fizzy - but yeah that sounds like a pain in the ass. Went to an Aldi once when I was in Chicago and had a similar experience, never again

Well, today I decided to check out a Publix about 4 miles from the house. I haven't been in a Publix since I stayed in Ft. Lauderdale, well over a decade. To my surprise they have a very small Bristish section. On the bottom shelf 4 plastic bottles of Irn Bru....very tempting, had a date on the neck of December 2019. Decisions , decisions, do I scoop them all up? Due to an "abundance of caution", I decided to buy only one. I'll try it this weekend....on the bright side I did find some Jammie Dodgers which I used to love as a kid...two packs made their way into the cart.

The Daily Record is running with a story that Martin Skrtel may be joining Stevie G's revolution....for some reason I thought he had retired. I know he is 34...but not heard about him in years...oh...he went to Turkey, could explain things.

Celtic safely through to the next qualifying round with a 2-1 victory at Parkhead. Next draw is on Monday 7/22.
Host Estonian champs Nomme Kalju next Wed. for the first leg. It is criminal that a side like Ajax is playing in these rounds of qualifying.

Good to see Griffiths back. Now sign a right back!

Another year another Flag Day at Paradise today. Celtic 7 St. Johnstone 0. Team looks refreshed from last season which was a bit of a struggle at times. I really think Ryan Christie (3 goals today) will establish himself as the best player in Scotland if he stays healthy this season. I think this Celtic team has the potential to be the best since the MON days.

Need to get the Tierney situation settled and if he is sold, use the money to buy quality. I was reading earlier that AC Milan and Leicester are looking at bidding for Ajer which would be a huge loss.

Cluj next in the "champions" league. Here we go 10 in a row.

I think they were sort of going through the motions last season, just like the manager was. Christie as you say, if healthy, can be the Player of the Year, no doubt about it. However, I think McGregor is the best player on the team, I'd rather they flog Tierney than McGregor. Celtic will lose games because McGregor did not play, I don't feel the same if Tierney does not play. That's the player the teams in England should be banging the door down to sign.

I'm being a bit conservative in my thoughts on the game against St Johnstone, Celtic were more direct, fast but at the same time St Johnstone simply don't look good. They have already lost to the likes of Forfar and Montrose this season. The fact that 4 goals were scored from outside the box is telling. Defending was woeful. Having said that, the shots were on target, not being blasted over the bar etc.

Mikey Jonhston is also looking good, I think he can have a break out season similar to Forrest years ago. He is one to keep an eye on.

If Celtic get through against Cluj, they play Slavia Prague, that's not the team I wanted, they were pretty good last season. Arguably the strongest team Celtic could have to face.

I see Stevie G is saying that if the games lasted 86 minutes , they would have won the league last season. I also saw their wild celebrations as they scored a late winner against killie, pitch invasion etc. Killie are really going to miss Steve Clark.

Cluj 1: Celtic 1

Assuming Celtic qualify for the next round, if they play like this defensively away, they will get buried by a better team.

Lewis Morgan should not be starting in Europe. Bolingoli is a defensive liability , I know it's early days, but he's not a left back. I'd rather have Lionel Blair playing left back.

Tierney fee finally agreed apparently, given the insane money being spent on bang average players down south, 25M will be a bargain for Arsenal.

Job half done in Romania, should beat Cluj by 2-3 next week, they won't be able to handle the pace of Mikey Johnston if he's fit.

Simunovic has glass knees...

That's all I have.

I didn't see the match, but saw that the deciding goal was scored in the 7th minute of stoppage time. 7 minutes? Was that legit?
I don't know shit about soccer but that jumped out to me when I looked at the score. I follow Celtic because a good friend of mine in the UK follows them. I asked him and he did not really answer, just a stream of (*&^%&*(*&^&*()(*&. Interested in hearing someone more rational.....

Probably a blessing in disguise. This team, as presently built, should not be anywhere near the CL. They would have been onto complete shellacking even if by some miracle they got by Prague. Cluj are a terrible team....says it all really. I just can't wait for the Pats season to start...can't wait.

Edit: The 7 minutes were ligit. Not so much for injury, Cluj were time wasting....he even added time to the added time for time wasting. Prague will break their legs.....they are a dirty team.

They'd better win the Europa play-in, or the loss of European revenue is going to wash out the Tierney money and they'll be in the same financial position but worse on the pitch.

At this point I really don't care about the EL, I'd prefer they keep Saturday football than playing Sundays and focus on domestic. Unless they sign a couple of players who are first team ready.

Ugh regret my 8/3 post. Didn't see the match (thankfully). Both newly signed expensive (for Celtic) defenders on the bench. McGregor to LB weakening the MF and he has proven he cannot play LB. 4 goals surrendered at home to an average side....what happened to Fortress Parkhead? The Board have a lot to answer for not spending and NL has a lot to answer for on tactics.

I haven't seen the Brown penalty and don't want to from what I have read about it.

i watched the Celtic match with my mate who's a die hard Celt. It was painful. Still can't fathom what Broony was doing with the handball. But that whole passage of play was a mess, terrible defending, butter fingers keeper, then Broony topped it off with a moment of madness. The defending in general was woeful. If McGregor was left in his normal position i think Celtic win the tie.

A lot of folks over here pissed off with the board. If the Gers make a better start to their league campaign than Celtic I can't see Lennon hanging around too long. Let's face it, it's a big step down from Rodgers.

What pisses me off the most was this could have been a good year for Scotland's clubs in Europe.

Mon The Hoops.

This is an interesting fixture for non footballing reasons. There was a sectarian riot on Friday a stonesthrow from where i live in Govan. It's made the papers and the news on't telly. But Govan gets by fine the vast majority of the time. We've got a growing Eastern European community and an African Community - they've got shops that are doing better than ever. We've got a Rangers pub on my corner and a Celtic pub 20 feet across the road. You can bring trouble to Govan. So i hope things are fine today and nothing much untoward flares up.

A scrappy match for the most part. But Celtic made the most of their chances, and it's nice to see Hayes come off the bench and get a goal.

Three of Celtic's back four had old firm debuts and they handled the occasion well. Rangers under performed, but Celtic didn't give them too much time on the ball, and got right in about them from the off.

I really do with there were more away fans but it's not to be.

Govan Rd is relatively calm, lots of Gers fans streaming out the boozer, but my guess we'll not see two sectarian riots this weekend.

I think we have dissected the problem with the game at the national level in previous threads. Grass roots level and all that. But just taking things at face value, an entire generation of Scottish kids have watched ( and probably turned off the TV) for the last 20 years. That’s hard to get back. Think about it…..a generation.

Huge 3 points v Lazio tonight at Paradise. 7 points from 3 games and top of the group. I just watched the highlights after work but just an incredible save from Forster at the end.

That Nazio supporters were marching through Glasgow doing Nazi salutes was disgusting but not surprising.

Decent result for the Huns as well to be fair.

Away to Aberdeen Sunday could be tough.

I watched the entire game, I decided to break down and subscribe to Bleacher Report Live that carries all the EL games, as well as Celtic away games, usually I find a dodgy stream for home games.

I thought a draw would have been a fair result, Celtic controlled much of the first half, but no real clear cut chances, in fairness, some last minute tackling bailed out Lazio. The second half, Lazio was more comfortable on the ball, defended higher up and just looked the better team for the first 15 minutes or so. In general, they exploited Celtic's left flank. Bolingoli is a wingback, not a left back...that much is obvious...but good enough for the SPL. Elyounoussie had a dreadful game, wasted possession was subbed off eventually. In an odd way, Lazio reminded me of Celtic under Rodgers, they continually tried to play out from the back and got themselves into trouble a few times by not having an out ball. Celtic hunted in packs, high energy forced quite a few mistakes. I don't watch much of Lazio but on this showing, I don't think they are that good defensively but they are very good on the counter attack. These are the kind of games Celtic would lose under Rodgers, I'm not a big fan of Lennon, but I think he manages Celtic better in Europe. It was a fantastic atmosphere, the thunder appears back for Euro nights, I hate the EL in general as far as what it does to the domestic schedule...but on nights like these, I can live with it. Forster, man of the match for me...the Lazio goal I thought he could have done better...he just kind of keeled over to the side...but he produced 3 brilliant saves after that.

Nazi salutes....nah...more like National Socialist Roman salutes...easy to get them confused. Vermin. I hope the green brigade didn't open up a can of worms with the "Fuck Lazio" sign...no doubt UEFA may have something to say. As I said...I hope Celtic fans are wary during the away leg.

I get it is a Roman Salute....just don't see much difference. And just pay for Celtic TV! The commentary is terrible but is a good feed.
I was not a fan of the Lennon hire but have no doubt (maybe talking myself into this) that Celtic loses tonight under Rodgers. This past summer has looked to be pretty decent in terms of signings considering the anguish of the supporters.

I was agreeing with you regarding the Nazi salute. Just being "dry" - hence vermin comment. I actually watch 99% of games with commentary off, I tend to watch where the ball isn't rather than where it is for player movement. What put me right off Celtic TV was the reliability complaints and comments that it wasn't really HD. I think someone said at some point they were still on 720. I'm willing to give it a try at some point.

What? No love for the sign that read " Laziale Parto Anale"?

Actually, I have mixed feelings about the Green Brigade. Sometimes their humor works, but sometimes I'm not sure if they are just trying to be too controversial and political. I know people disagree but I don't believe in the politilization of the terraces. There is enough politics to go round without it at a football game. But hey, that's just me.

What I am curious about is the behaviour of some Lazio fans outside the stadium. I know there were some 700 fans escorted by police to the stadium and there were videos posted of some doing Nazi salutes. I don't know did this continue in the stadium or not. I don't know what the laws are, but I think if some random Glaswegian pulled that shit on Sauchiehall street there would be a good chance he would be arrested by Glasgow's finest. I guess they figured it would cause too much trouble if they actually arrested them.

I don't know what the laws are, but I think if some random Glaswegian pulled that shit on Sauchiehall street there would be a good chance he would be arrested by Glasgow's finest. I guess they figured it would cause too much trouble if they actually arrested them.
This confused me too. I mean, there's footage. But then again, and this is just off the top of my head, i recall the unionist celebrations in George Square the day of the Indy Ref and there was a lot of that type of thing...dunno if there were any prosecutions, don't recall there being any. And even just a few weeks ago i think there's footage of Unionists on an Orange/Proddy march doing some 'saluting'.

I also have mixed feeling about the Green Brigade, although I'm probably 75/25 in favour, I do think they have to be really careful with their imagery and wordings. But, i see them as a reaction to the philosphies that might come from the more extreme end of the Rangers fan base. I think they are trying to be as hard lined but to the left as opposed to the right...which can sometimes get you into hot water in regards to the groups you might signal an association or sympathy with.

Anyway, i think it was a good night for Scottish Football and that is my number one concern. Rangers did well to get a point in Porto. And if both teams can get out of their groups there's a good chance the coefficient points will result in one extra Champion's League Spot (and one less qualifying round) for the Scottish Clubs in the 20/21 season - or was it the 21/22...it's hard to keep track.

I think Lennon has just about found his feet again as Celtic manager. They play some good stuff, and when they don't panic they are more solid at the back in these Europa games. It's taken a few weeks for the new signings in defense to bed in, that's normal. Obvious caveat is that the opposition is weaker, but i think Lennon was right when he said that both Old Firm clubs will be back in the CL sooner than later. I really like Frimpong the young Right back they got from City. Shame he's cup tied for the group stages.

So I'm heading back home for a couple of weeks next month. Wife is going too and she wants to go to the League Cup Final on the 8th. I'm all in and I know tickets will be like gold dust. I've never found a site in the UK like Stub Hub etc, where if you have the money, you can get any ticket you want. Any ideas? I'm willing to pay way over face value....it's the wife's bucket list after all. So within reason..money is no object but none of this 'gies a mullion and they're yers!". I've heard hotel concierge can be a good start but we are flying into Edinburgh the day before so it would be short notice. Of course, it would have to be on the Celtic side. Somewhat work related , I'm also heading to Fife to check out Dunbarnie Links which opens next year.

Who would have thought both Hearts and Hibs would sack their managers within a few days of each other?

Oh my word. Ntcham dinks the ball over the keeper to score the winner v Lazio. First win for Celtic in Italy - final score 1-2. A great result for Celtic and Scottish football. Oh my word, wiz hanging on for the point and they get the winner, wow.

Good game, pleased to see Lennon change things bit by playing 3:5:2 instead of 4:2:3:1 to start. Lazio cut their own throats again by trying to play out of the back...madness. Kind of funny thinking about what a difference a few months make at right back. Frimpong makes Elhamad look slow ( and he most definitely is not), and Elhamad makes Lustig look like Metal Mickey without legs ( which he was).

Result wise, I think it's up there with the 3:1 win in Amsterdam but nothing close to 2:0 at Anfield. Beat Rennais at home, secure first...send reserves to Romania. This team shows spiwit and dewwing-do in Europe ..unlike under Rogers.

Edit: Rangers up by two against Porto......

Yes, a fine night for Scottish football. Rangers getting the win v Porto. I watched the second half and they were good value for the 2-0 win. This is good for the coefficient. I don't have wish one or two other Scottish teams could get their act together though.
