That certainly weighs in favor of signing him to a one year deal. But I worry about any player who pulls a Jody Reed (turn down lots of guaranteed money and then have to settle for much less). I heard that Schroeder is a FA right now because he turned down $84M from the Lakers.
Who made a worse decision......Schroeder for turning down $84m GTD or the Lakers for offering it?

This is where an Agent earns his stripes in finding a way for the Celtics to rid themselves of Dunn’s $5m this year so his client can earn an additional $3.6m.

That’s a tough one. Has Schroeder fired his agent yet?

This reminds me of Dan Duquette's Jody Reed story. Back when he was the GM of the Montreal Expos, he negotiated a deal in whic he sent 2B Delino DeShield to the Dodgers for Pedro Martinez. Martinez was coming off of a rookie year where he was a dominant bullpen arm.

The then Dodgers GM told Duquette that he would do the deal if his second baseman, Jody Reed, turned down the extension he had been offered.

Duquette: "What did you offer him?"

Dodgers GM: "3 years, $8 million" [a lot of money in 1992]

Duquette: "Well of course he'll take that. Why did we even discuss this trade?"

Dodgers GM: "You don't know Jody."

Needless to say, Reed turned down the deal and because a free agent. The trade was made, the Expos turned Pedro into a starter, and the rest was history. (Reed ultimately accepted a minor league deal from the Brewers, won the 2B jon in camp, and played on a one year deal for $750,000).

This would be most excellent, especially as it seems both Schoeder and Irving hate each other. Kyrie has owned him over 16 games with 27.3 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in 16 games. Schroder has averaged 12.8 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.3 rebounds in those 16 games.

I've only seen Schroder play a whole game a few times, but this is my read on him. Good not a great shooter. He's excellent at breaking down his man and driving to the basket and you can probably pencil him in for 15-20 ppg in 30 min. On the other end, I've seen him make a few athletic plays but what's the board's take on his defense? (Obviously, Kyrie torched him like he does everyone, though)

I heard that Schroeder is a FA right now because he turned down $84M from the Lakers.
Yes he did. And Mark Murphy is reporting that he's "shell shocked":

“He’s only interested in one year, and then getting back out there,” said the source, who added that Schroder has also run into another problem — the sudden lack of available starting point guard jobs.
The Celtics have pitched Schroder the idea of backing up Marcus Smart next season.
“He needs time — I think he’s in a state of shock because of what he’s done,” the source said of Schroder turning down a four-year, $84 million offer last season from the Lakers, who responded by trading for Russell Westbrook.

Note if Schroder is looking for a 1+1 at the full MLE that would be $19M and would result in the Cs being hard-capped. That's a big difference from the $5.9M Taxpayer MLE or the $11.8M if the Cs were to give him a player option for the 2nd year.

If you are Schroeder what you're focused on now really needs to be role and opportunity in 2021-2022. That $84 mil is gone for now.

Celtics likely have him as a 25-30 minute a game guy, so similar to his last couple of years. They will want him to be at least a partial crunch-time guy and likely want him to be a secondary scorer whenever he is on the court. That's a pretty good situation for him--he might want more shots, but they also can show he can operate in a winnning situation.

OKC can offer more money and a bigger role, but have to wonder whether they will. Their likely play with him would be to give him lots of chances and then flip him in Feb for more picks. They should have the minutes in front of Maledon, but who knows with them. Since he played there two years ago no way to really be sure what fit is---could be a plus, could be a non-starter for either.

Would Denver pop up with an interest in a quasi-Murray replacement for much of the year? That's a potential fit for him, though I tend to think Celtics a better opportunity.

Who else is likely bidding---as much with role as money?

if you Squint Schroder is pretty similar to Lonzo who many here thought would be a really good fit with the Jays.

Career O +D rating
103 110
103 109

WS/48 Career
.063
.067

20-21 OWS DWS
1.5 1.7
1.0 2.7

I am by no means qualified to spout the sorcery that is NBA advanced stats but I encourage you all to take a look and see if you came to a similar conclusion.

Obviously some numbers favor Lonzo (3pt shooting) but other then that the Play was great Mrs Lincoln.

For instance Schroder scores more....even if not as efficient. He also is more of a playmaker with more assists and similar TO%. Dennis also shots FTs better for Crunch time.

Lonzo rebounds slightly better and is listed as 3 inches taller (6'6 to 6'3) but I assume that Schroder has been playing NBA defense the last 8 years and hasnt been hunted to death. (which is where we really drooled about Lonzos height).

I guess we could ding Schroder for playing with James last year and getting the Lebron bump. But basically last year was a bit down to avg for him while Lonzo had a (young) career year. Lonzo might continue to improve a bit while Schroder is probably what he is.

IDK about Darko and all that magic. But I was surprised that they seemed so close.

Plus we would retain flexibility which has value.

I’d be all for DS at 5.9M, 2nd year player option or not. Would be highly unlikely he takes it anyway.

Hard to believe he may actually sign for that given some of the other deals this off-season. What a terrible decision by him and his agent on that 84M….

The stories of him being "in a state of shock" make me wonder if he might wait a little longer to see if he can get a bigger deal or if he's in a sort of furious denial. But I have no idea where more money would come from at this point.

from wikipedia
His agent is former German basketball national player Ademola Okulaja.
am thinking Okulaja won't be expanding his client base (though, just to be clear -- this is on Schroder, who frankly seems like a hard-headed sort).

That said, if the Celtics can get him at $6 million, that's a steal.

I've seen enough missed 3-pointers from Carsen Edwards to last a lifetime.

Yes. Good to see!! The pieces are coming together for us to make a major leap next year. Loving this.
After Nesmith opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, I figured you'd take this game off. (ducks)

That is an amazing coup. Poor Dennis lost the game of musical chairs.

Isn’t he a locker room cancer or am I confusing him with someone else?
Don’t really like his style of play but this seems below his worth.

People would have been thrilled if he signed for 40/4 last week.

Schroder is a guy who I've seen play a fair amount and I have no idea what to make of him. He seems like a guy who shows flashes of brilliance but has struggled to show consistency. His shooting seems inconsistent game to game. I'm very curious to see what happens to a guy who enters the season knowing that his last chance at a huge contract is having an incredible season -- that kind of pressure can cause selfishness, anger, incredible play, and everything in between. Obviously, he's a massive bargain at this price.

Isn’t he a locker room cancer or am I confusing him with someone else?

He kind of had that rep. This article mentions that. Here's another article about his mercurial nature.

Edited to add -- he's made $70m so far in his career, so while the $84m "loss" is a real kick in the balls, he'll be OK (assuming he's not the German Antoine Walker, spending-wise).

He realizes he gambled and lost. One would think he knows what he needs to do this season to cash in next summer.

This is a roughly fair value, for a low end rotation level level guy.

I love this move as a business decision. Not sure how this is going to shake out on the court, but I will keep an open mind. Kid isn't afraid of anything.

The move looks even more deft when you consider all the bloated contracts that were handed a few days ago.

I will say that I am not eager to hear his name get mangled on a more regular basis.

He's a prickly guy. Reminds me of Rondo in that respect.

He'll likely be shoveled off to a contender for a 2nd and a trade exception.

Roster now:

G: Smart, Schroder, Dunn
G: Richardson, Pritchard, Edwards
F: Brown, Nesmith, Langford
F: Tatum, Grant, Parker*
C: Rob, Horford, Kanter, Fernando
2-way: Hauser

That's 16 guys for 15 slots, so, at minimum, Parker is not long for this team and there may be additional moves on the way. Dunn seems like a good candidate to be shoveled off, and Carsen Edwards is the sort of guy who occupies a roster spot if there's room.

Is there any cap-related reason the team needs to dump Parker now? Based on his minutes at the end of last season, he seems like a guy I would be happy to leave on the end of the bench to eat up minutes during the regular season, especially in back-to-backs where the Jays and others are being load managed. Maybe he provides some instant offense off the bench a handful of times over the course of the regular season.

I’ve seen enough of Carsen to know that he is completely useless against actual NBA players - I’d rather fill the last roster spot with anyone else

Parker's contract is not guaranteed. All of the other contracts are guaranteed. That's why he's likely on the outside looking in, unless they free up some spots. But, technically speaking, they are allowed to have more than 15 players under contract during the offseason, so no pressure to move him.

I like it. Nesmith and PP are going to have to shoot the heck out of the ball.

A lot of other “meh” shooting in the rotation outside of the Jays.

Game seems to be based on athleticism. 27 years old. One or two more years. 6'3" in sneakers is decent size for a combo guard. Seems tough, mentally.

It's really going to come down to Udoka. How much can he squeeze out of a player. Is he a whisperer or not.

The toilet.
I like it. He was a pest when he was with ATL. Think he'll be a Smart/Marchand type with that attitude: hate him if he's on the other team, but love him if he's on yours.

Sorry Bill, but there's no way Schroeder sits ahead of Smart on that list. And I say that as someone who likes the signing and isn't a Smart fanboy.
Won’t they both start to begin the year?

If healthy I would think Schroder/Smart/Brown/Tatum/TL

If it's a depth chart, I take it to mean that both Smart and Schroder will start in the backcourt. I don't think that Schroder and Pritchard can play all that much together given their size and no way the latter is starting, so it's likely the former does.
