All of this is why I’ll never quit Twitter. It’s like a giant colosseum and the only weapon you have is words. It can be awful in so many ways, but bullshit artists don’t win. The truth generally rises to the top.

The best part is not that Whitlock doesn’t know nip is a slur – it’s that he still refuses to believe it is now that he’s been told about it:
Even his take on the n-word being used in hip hop (by “rappers”) is wrong and sounds like some person who’s never actually listened to hip hop.
The worst part of all this is that we're giving Jason Whitlock attention again. He's the worst.
Whitlock 's got no talent, and is just begging to get "cancelled," as the talentless call it, so he can monetize *that* because it's much easier than "working." Many folks have pointed out that it *is* a slur. Many have said they didn't know it was a slur. NO ONE has said it is NOT a slur. Until now.
Whitlock only writes for aggrieved, white, racist folks now. He’s gotta play to that.
It *is* sports-related. It also started locally. And he's defending people who are making life worse locally. So fair game, IMO. (I get the "he only wants to occupy space in your head" argument.)
This is 100% true. Because his argument is basically: "I've never heard of this slur, so it can't be true." And "It's not a slur because it's not as bad of a slur as the n-word." Both are insane arguments that if you started in a bar would get you thrown out or punched. Maybe both!
Personally think Howie is a scumbag of the highest order, but he's got some interesting nuggets in here. (including that someone unloaded 7 million shares of Audacy stock last Friday)

Man, I got to know Whitlock posting on the old SportsJournalists.com board (which I believe got into some sort of war with SoSH way back when). Anyway, he is the thinnest skinned piece of shit in the sports journalism business and that is really saying something.
I got queasy when I heard about the Curtis incident that this thread would have the same energy. Thankfully, it wasn't that many "I've never heard of [X, Y, or Z Asian slurs] before" posts.
By the way is Minihane still a thing? I clicked through one of the twitter links and scrolled around a little bit and it looks like he's in a trivia contest with Joe Murray...?
Not really following you here...are people supposed to be keeping a running database of all things slurs? Some of the Asian ones I would've only known from older Vietnam war movies like Full Metal Jacket or Platoon for example. I'm 47 and in my experience I've never heard those words used in "real life". Not to say it doesn't happen but everyone's life experience is different.

These past 6-8 years have been a stark reminder that we still have a lot of work to do as a nation when it comes to racism. One thing I will say is that I do find it encouraging that some here were unaware that the word used by Curtis is a slur, assuming of course that that they didn't associate the word at all with Asians. The fact that generations younger than mine have largely grown up unaware or vaguely aware of many ethnic slurs that were common place in the 50s, 60s and 70s is a good thing, but the Curtis' of the world must be addressed and serve as a reminder that this is not acceptable.
Could Lou Merloni get his own thread? I feel horrible having to click on here looking for information on Framingham Lou's new career as a Red Sox analyst and instead have to read about the stinking set of racist garbage that is WEEI. Lou isn't paid by or have a show on EEI anymore so why can't he get his own thread. He has absolutely nothing to do with Curtis or any of the other assorted sorry excuses for mouth breathers employed by WEEI.

Fantastic article. The reflexive defensiveness is what is keeping Boston from addressing the "Boston is racist" narrative.
Unfortunately, I think that a lot of people (myself included) are guilty of this. And like the author said, I'm not even sure why I do/did it. I've heard enough stories about POC and their problems in Boston and I'm like, "Well, before the Braves moved they had Sam Jethroe and people back then really liked him, so it was more of a Tom Yawkey thing." Which is absolutely wrong.
I'm not sure exactly how this problem can be fixed, but I think it begins with white people to stop saying, "It's not so bad" and bringing up examples of shit that happened 50, 60, 70 years ago.
Right: as white folks it's kinda on us to stop pretending we know what it's like to be a POC, and especially don't know it better than that POC. Arguing with a Black guy about whether or not they experience racism is...kinda insane when you think about it.

I really don't think that show is that bad. I've listened to it here and there, it's fine and it's kinda growing on me a little bit. But 18th is tough, man. Oof. I'm not sure how much longer it will be around.
I agree with you. I think it is better than F&M and if I am in the car in the afternoon (which is not very often) I will tune in to WEEI. I like Mego and Arcand and I don't take Jones too seriously but he seems to be a decent guy. Part of it may be how much I dislike the on air personalities of F&M.
