I suspect EEI would run commercials for just about anyone who would pay them.

It was a long time ago, but the worst I ever heard when I used to listen their station was for a company that performed paternity tests. It had a bunch of dbag bros talking about their big trip to Las Vegas and how one of their friends was a sucker and couldn't go because he got some girl pregnant. The idea was that he could take a paternity test and if the kid wasn't his he could just dump them and go on the trip. After the commercial break, even Dale Arnold mentioned what a terrible commercial it was and I don't recall ever hearing it again.
Jesus Christ, that's awful. That sounds like a Mr. Show sketch.

Jesus, and I thought the current non stop cycle of IRS problems/ credit card debt/ dick pills was yuck. (on both stations to be fair)

The latest I heard was constant ads about being a Sperm Donor on the podcasts.

Northeast Men's Health must dump a shit ton of money into WEEI and 98.5. They're probably more than Leonard Hair Transplants and Awaken180. I don't really remember any credit card Dept or IRS problem ads on 98.5 but I probably blocked them out.

Think you're right. Usually bounce back and forth between the two stations but seems like I hear the same sponsors. "Watched Braveheart, long, veteran move". heh.

This is fascinating to me. In the ever shrinking sports radio market landscape, Boston manages to have 2 stations in the top 12 -- with the TSH the kings at #1. I guess this means EEI is still viable in its current form?

I take this with a huge grain of salt. In reading the article this was a voted award from industry folks around the country, and had nothing to do with listenership. Some radio person in the mountain west region may remember hearing about some WEEI controversy from way back in the day and is like 'Yeah they seem like a pretty important station.' When talking about the grumpiness of Boston fans, "WEEI caller" is still the example a lot of folks in the media talk about. So in that respect, 13th place out of 33 is actually a really bad sign IMO.

Great point. I sort of read it from a surface level skimming.

Yesterday I wasn't aware that the Sox were playing a day game but around 1:30 I told my Amazon Alexa device to turn on 93.7.
When it came on, and to my surprise, it was streaming 'EEI's Red Sox broadcast. Tested it on another Alexa in a different room and same result.
Guessing it's a temporary oversight, but just sharing for anyone out of market that might want to listen to the game.

edit: after a quick 15 second Google it appears the station does stream the games if you're "in market". For some reason I thought MLB only allowed it through their paid platform.

oh that’s sweet. In the past they always didn’t which was extremely annoying

Can anyone explain why a producer like Chris Curtis is allowed such a long leash talking on the Hillman show? They might have something there if they turn his mic off.

Every time I see this thread get bumped I think it’s because EEI is getting shut down.

Which, as long as it has the Sox, I don’t think will happen.

I've always envisioned the scene from Private Parts where they changed the format to a country music station, and Stern had to wear a Cowboy hat before quitting. EEI converting to a country music format would be a perfect end to things.

Kirk Minihane said it's because Curtis sucked up to Greg Hill. Greg has very good ratings and is the reason the lights stay on at WEEI, so he's basically running the station and what he says goes.

The morning show is all the station has currently, WFAN is the same with Boomer and Gio, after those morning shows it drops straight off a cliff on both stations. It's already time to fix the afternoon show again as im sorry it is time to move on from Fitzy, can we please get someone with some edge and maybe a tad controversial! Other than the occasional old football story from Ted that i have not heard before, the afternoon drive show is just a boring listen imo.

Maybe the ratings suck after Hill, but the only time I come close to turning the station to WEEI is if I'm on the road between 10-2 with Jones & Keefe. Which is why it is so stupid they are on at midday. This should have been the combo when Jones was on during drive time previously.

I've become a consistent listener to them on the podcast. I hate both afternoon shows, so I usually listen to them after 2 if I want to listen to something. The show just works. Even Jones has turned less negative and you can tell they're having a lot of fun and genuinely like each other.

Per the above, Fitzy does have to go as a full time host. He's fine if you brought him in for a segment or two, but his jokes and delivery gets so old so fast. It's half talking and half a standup routine and just doesn't work for extended periods of time.

And the whole "Fitzy from fahkin Southie" schtick was played out in the 90s. It's so lame.
I think he also stole half of his schtick from Chris Berman with constant nicknames.

Oh funny call Edelman The Squirrel for the 5,000 time or say Bergy instead for Bergeron etc. it’s so lame. There’s so many I can think of where he does the Berman Eric “Don’t call me” Bennemy thing but I think I blocked them all out.

Holy shit, Fitzy got a radio show gig!? The five minute YouTube clips were fun for awhile, but four hours a day? That is legitimately insane.

This is where i'm at too. I will tune in live if i'm in the car but then i'll Podcast at night or on the weekends. I typically don't miss a show. I agree they genuinely do like each other. Gresh was awful but Keefe somehow made it nearly tolerable. I don't understand why the ratings would be good for the Hill show, i've tried to listen to it and it seems awful but i guess it's quite subjective.

I'll tune in to Evan and Tiki sometimes as well to get some NY coverage.

That is easy, because they dont spend 4 hours on straight sports talk. It's why the Big Show was ranked number 1 for so long because the show was broken up at times with just goofing off, political talk and imo at times great callers, todays call ins are all straight s#@t to listen to imo. I'm sure someone will come in here and tell me how wrong i am, and how sports talk radio should be all sports talk, but the ratings do not lie. As long as they remain in the 100% serious all the time sports talk format, their shows regardless of who is doing them will be poorly received ratings wise.

It just comes down to different strokes for different folks. I wondered why T&R, when they were together, did the ratings they did by playing interviews with "drunk" fans, the various sound effects, fart noises, etc., and Wallach laughing every 5 seconds. But there was a big audience for that in this market. Regarding Hill's show, it just comes down to Greg being established and good at building a show. Wiggy is a better and wackier version of LB, Courtney is a big upgrade of Danielle. I personally prefer it to T&H, but I wouldn't say it's a great show. It's fine for what it is - having it on in the background while I commute to work.

Political talk is an instant turn off, and while their ratings are good, that's part of why their show will never be number 1 in the market. Too many voices, too much fighting, too many topics where you either completely agree with what they're saying or can't change the dial fast enough.

Felger is entertaining and does sports talk in an entertaining way. Being boring like Dale Arnold and reading box scores and talking about the Bruins 4th line and the 8th man on the Celtics is bad radio.
Of course, but Felger is also 100% pure sports talk. Whenever another host or caller tries to deviate to some other non-sports topic he immediately reigns it back into just the sports topic on hand.
Other shows like Zo & Bertrand, Hill Show, Keefe & Jones have plenty of leash to talk about pop culture, food, whatever which makes them way more entertaining, imo.
