Pro sports franchise valuations ceased to bear any rational relationship to business fundamentals a long time ago. Determining whether Sherman is overpaying for the Royals is like determining whether someone overpaid for a Picasso.

if Glass is unencumbered to sell, whatever became of Kauffman's attempts to ensure that the team never left Kansas City? I thought it basically became a public trust of some kind.

Quick calculation comes out to about a 12.5% annual ROI. That's certainly good but it's not materially different than solid private equity returns.

That Royals team that won the 2015 World Series has to be one of the worst teams to win the WS this millennium. Lorenzo Cain was their best player and Chris Young was their best pitcher. The other candidate for that title would be the 2014 Giants who beat the same Royals team the year before; who won the WS with a team OPS of .699.

You're assuming he made no money as the owner over 19 years in this scenario.

Wade Davis was their best pitcher. You probably mean Young was their best starting pitcher. Not disagreeing with your overall sentiment but the bullpen was their strength IIRC.

Royals 5 best pitchers were probably their relievers. Davis+Herrera+Frasor+Madson+Finnegan, plus they had 5 (positional) starters and utility guy Zobrist with 119+ OPS+. Won 95 regular season games. Hardly one of the worst to win the WS.

Also went to the WS the year before. They had a good little run.

Rich people actually AREN'T like me and you. If he thinks he can make money moving the team, he'll move the team.

That being said, I'm not sure MLB will let him move, nor do I think there are (m)any places that would work better for a team than KC

I disagree.

A $1 billion investment in a small-market MLB team is completely unjustified by business fundamentals. It’s a vanity project. By all accounts, Sherman styles himself a pillar of the community in KC, and I’m sure his relationships there have great value to his other business interests. He’s not going to light all that on fire to squeeze a little more cash out of a venture that he’s obviously not getting into based on its merits as an investment.

I would say that if there was someone looking to buy a franchise and move it, it would be the Rays.

Considering the appreciation of that franchise and pretty much every other Major League franchise in all 4 sports (Not sure about soccer) in the US, I'd say it's a pretty good bet to be worth more money than he paid for it in 10 years, whether still in KC or after a move to Las Vegas or some other place that wants a team.

I would hope he wouldn't move it, but I expect this pillar of the community will follow the money.

It was a long time ago, but Art Modell was a pillar of the Cleveland community

So on my MSN homepage there was a blurb that read, "Royals may move to Malibu". So naturally I click onto the link because when has any of us heard Malibu associated with the relocation of ANY sports franchise? Turns out that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are considering a change of scenery.

Why would the Rays want to buy another franchise, never mind move it?
