Kreider just boarded Jarvis, then Trouba came in high to retaliate on Jarvis. Somehow, only Kreider took anything, and it was just a minor.

Eight minors called so far in CAR-NYR tonight, and things getting chippy mid-way through the 2nd.

Go Rangers. The Whalicanes have been a thorn in the Bruins side since they were in Hartford.
Not trying to jinx the Bruins here, as they still need to get past the god-forsaken Panthers

ESPN nearly pulled a Heidi there, cutting away to the next game in the last minute of the 3rd. I can’t imagine the fallout if someone had scored before they came back.

Trouba, who should have gotten a stern talking to for just missing on his attempted murder of Necas about 10 minutes ago, proceeds to trip Necas and put Carolina on the power play.

In all seriousness, that’s a penalty, right? Suspendable? I’m sure it won’t happen, but he launches off of both feet and that left elbow flys out and would have hit him in the head had he not ducked. Looked very Matt Cooke’ish to me. I love the battlers and the gritty guys, but I hate this intent or high probability to injure shit. Regardless of which team I am rooting for.

What's the penalty though if nothing happens? Same thing suspension wise. I can't see how the NHL would suspend a guy and say "we know what he was trying to do, he just failed at doing it". Maybe there's an example of it being done and I don't follow the NHL closely enough to remember an example of it happening.

Intent to injure is a major penalty.

Of course, whether they would actually call it or not is another question.

I don't see the issue with the non-hit. He only "launches" off his feet because his skates hit Necas. Sure, if Necas stays up the elbow probably catches him (which would definitely be suspendible). I don't think he was going after him with the intent of elbowing him - it looks like Necas pulls up (which causes Trouba's skates to his Necas', which in turn causes Trouba to launch) and when he pulls up Trouba pulls the old chicken wing elbow move. Certainly suspendible if it connects but it's a normal reaction to someone avoiding a hit at the last second (and we've seen it from countless players). No harm no foul here.

Trouba is enough of a punk that he should never get the benefit of the doubt. But it’s also the Rags so I would not hold my breath on any discipline.

I’ve never been a big “outcome determines severity of the punishment kind of guy”. In my real life, I value intent more - be it with my wife or kids, etc…
Nothing happened, but something was attempted… in my eyes he launched himself in an attempt to hit the player and came flying in with his elbow out right where his head would have been.
If Trouba came in super hard with a shoulder check, I’m good, but I thought you weren’t supposed to leave your feet and the attempted elbow to the head - especially at that velocity reminds me of Matt Cooke and we don’t need that in the game. And the game can still be very physical without it.

Good catch. I missed Necas’ skated taking out Trouba’s skates. Still hate the elbow, but I stand down.

He was already coming up out of his skates to hit him which is why he ended up airborne when the skates connected. If he was playing through the body and not trying to take his head off he would have stayed on the ice and perhaps tripped but not ended up flying over him, certainly not to the extent he did. Then add on the clearly targeted elbow and I don't see how it can be deemed a harmless play. Had he connected with that elbow Necas is probably in concussion protocol right now.

It was an extremely dirty attempt without a result.

I feel like many of you didn't read the post referencing the NHL rules (rule 602 for those interested). There is indeed a penalty for intent to injure. I've never seen it used/called, but it's certainly in there.

He really wasn’t “coming out of his skates.”

Trouba went for a huge hit and missed. There’s nothing illegal about flattening a guy. He was going to run him over, likely without using his elbow, until Necas pulled up (which is what caused his elbow to swing out - happens all the time when someone is going for a hit and they “adjust” at the last minute). The elbow connecting would have definitely gotten him a suspension but I don’t know how you can say this was an intent to injure when it mirrors the pattern of so many big hits. It’s a harmless play because, well, there was literally no harm.
