What, is he going to respectfully disagree with that call but it's ok because his team - his expertly assembled and coached team - just needs to overcome?

This shit show probably cost Jacobs $10 million bucks, so I’m if that doesn’t get him up Bettman’s ass, I don’t know what will.
The only way to get jacobs to care is to stop buying tickets. End the sellout streak until the bruins get fairly treated in the playoffs.

No problem! But who is his dad? I can't put my finger on it?
Colin Campbell. Formerly in charge of the officials as VP of the league. If you get a chance, read about the emails involving him that ended up as part of a lawsuit a few years ago. It shows how petty a lot of these guys are.

That's it.

I'm pretty sure old Colin isn't unemployed though.

(I'm just having some fun with having to only connect two dots while wearing my tin foil cap, and it is more fun because, as you note, he might be a guy with a track record of putting a thumb on the scale to help out the interests of his kid. Good times!)

Man... normally I can let these go, but this one just sucks hard... cause I know the Bruins aren't a better team, but they are literally built to steal series with the Goalie and D setup they have, but it's literally being ripped out of their hands by this insane officiating. The Bruins should have been able to steal this game tonight, and potentially be tied going back to Florid 2-2, and maybe getting in the pnathers heads a bit.

Instead, you are being officiated to such a different standard that even if you were a better team than the opposing team, you would be hard pressed to over come it.

Quoting ctillion for having the courage to stand up for the team losing, despite the truth in everthing he is saying.

Give this guy a membership imo. he is not just a reactionary poster.
haha... thanks, but I am very reactionary in different situations. I had a set feel for this team going into the season, and they've hit most of it. So it's a bit easier to let this go. If this was last year, I'd be all over the place if this was going on.

A GM calling a press conference during a playoff series is highly unusual.

He didn’t say whatever he has to say tonight because all the reporters have gone home and a statement on an off-day from a GM will get much more coverage and play.

Should be interesting, for what he says or what he doesn’t say.

Didn't you hear? Panger set the record straight, he got hurt later in the game

Fuck this league and its water carriers
That was so asinine. Completely set up for “nothing to see here!” from the league. All that shows is that:

1. The league “concussion spotters” are there for security theater, and really don’t do anything.

2. Marchand had 2nd impact head contact after the concussion, which is exactly what causes serious, long term brain injuries.

The NHL protecting players is a joke.

So I didn't watch last night. Combination of Mother's Day and needing a day off from all of these Boston playoff games. Kept up through the game thread. Was actually thinking best of both worlds when it was 2-0 - Bruins would win and I wouldn't be stressed about it. Read about the play. Finally saw it this morning. It's so depressing, especially on the heels of the other interference call this series, and Bennett scoring is the cherry on top. And the reverse angle of the hit on Marchand not surfacing until yesterday. I want to believe that it's on the up and up, but I am having a hard time getting there. The worst part is that it breaks my son's heart. I get that more often than not you're going to have sports break your heart. But it's not supposed to happen like this.

It remains miraculous that they beat Vancouver in 2011 considering how badly we wanted to beat them after the Burrow and Rome incidents. I'm basically at that level right now, except they also have to overcome the league, and that's just too much.

Ugh.

Is there anything in particular that more knowledgeable hockey types know for why the league seems to have it out for the Bruins? Is it just a general not liking Boston? Payback for having the nerve to win in 2011 instead of laying down for the Canucks? Beating the Leafs in game 7 in 2013? This last one feels like the most likely candidate to my (admittedly casual fan) eye. I don't remember the Bruins getting screwed quite so badly before 2013.

Judging from the emails between league people that got leaked during that deposition a few years ago, it’s the same kind of internal politics that go on at most big companies happening at the league office. Boston gets the short end because all of the guys that work at the league office live in Greater Toronto and have heard constant bitching from Leafs, Habs, Canucks fans about the Bruins going back years on sports radio heading into work every morning. I don’t think there is any kind of conspiracy or anything, it’s just the same thing that happens with the Patriots in the NFL office. The NHL thinks the Bruins are goons, so everything is viewed through that prism. Just like the NFL thinks the Patriots cheat, so everything is viewed through that prism.

Maybe some day, the Bruins will figure out how to have a better relationship with the league office, but until then, shit like this will continue to happen.

why the league seems to have it out for the Bruins?
Look, @Salem's Lot is probably right, but I'm in a mood this morning.

Allow me to lay out a tinfoil hat theory for everyone, available in the dark places of the internet already, more or less:

The tinfoil hat theory:

Gregory Campbell has been part of the Panthers organization since 2020 and on and off since they drafted him in 2002.

Gregory Campbell's dad Colin -- NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations -- is constantly in the ear of the refs about how innocent and salt of the earth his son's Panthers are. And the Big Bad Bruins are a bunch of goons. Colin Campbell has always hated the Bruins anyway, except for the little window when Gregory played for them, and he is forever pissed about the role of the Bruins in it being revealed that he's a corrupt scumbag willing to use his influence to help his son.

So now he leans into it.

And thus, not very far behind the scenes, the refs are on notice that any incidental holding penalty caught on film from Boston that they let fly is going to ding them on their reffing score sheet and any call against Florida better be nearly blood drawing.

And while this is sorta about Boston, it is mostly about Florida, which is why the hockey world was in shock last year when the normally untouchable Leafs got mauled in round 2.

And the people in Toronto on the monitors get this memo too.

How memo-y does the memo have to be? Probably not very explicit at this point. People are not fools. They know who butters their bread.

And indeed, what is the single biggest evidence people who hate the Bruins use to confirm that the league actually loves them?

Well, all roads lead to Rome. And it is not hard to see the argument that 4 games was a hell of a suspension for that hit, even if it was late and warranted more than just 2 or 5. It was hardly more than what Trouba seems to go for every shift. And... who was camped out on the 4th line of that Bruins team? Gregory Campbell. But that is ancient history.

And while Campbell Jr. lasted on the Bruins through 2015, since then though, I'd be willing to bet at least SoSH has been complaining pretty hard about the refs.

Indeed, only a few short years after Jr leaves the team, the Bruins are back in the finals vs. St Louis and are mauled the entire way. And that was just the warm-up based on Colin being a skeevy old prick, back to hating Boston with Jr out of the organization.

Now we've got his son involved on the other side, making it doubly hard for the refs to see clearly.

It does not take a Glen Beck bulletin board to see the action here!

(I can't decide if I'm writing this as a joke or because I kinda think it is true.)

Friedman/Marek's take from today's pod. They do carry water from the league but I thought they had reasonable takes.

They started by joking that Sweeney was going to go full Brian Burke today and that he should just walk out and put a blank check on the podium made out to the NHL fines or whatever the account is.

On Bennett/Marchand: Friedman wasn't surprised there was no supplementary discipline because the league never suspends for that type of play. Didn't offer a personal opinion but said he was surprised at how many players/former players were saying it was a bad play. Particularly Biz who is typically ver pro-player. He said the Bruins were upset that there wasn't any scrutiny on the play, it seems like the NHL told the Bruins very quickly that they weren't taking a look. Marek added that Bennett is is a nasty, vicious player. I disappointed neither offered their opinion of if they thought it was suspendable. Or at least hearing worthy.

On the goal. Who boy.

Friedman said he didn't think the goal should count, citing the rulebook. He thinks there were 2 factors that worked against the Bruins. First was that the NHL viewed Coyle as going down easy and the second was Jon Cooper (the ever whining shithead) making a stink about GI in the first round when he had 2 goals overturned on review in game 5. Cooper made a horrible comment but the gist was that the goalies need to battle harder. Marek said he suspects the league determined that Swayman couldn't make the save without the contact so they just allowed it. His big issue with this is they don't apply or use that for offside reviews when we analyze pixels for a speck of white ice 45 seconds before a goal and take the goal away.

First, I think Marek is correct in that they basically came to the conclusion that Swayman couldn't make the save without the contact. That may be correct but A) who are they to make that judgement and B) most importantly, there is no fucking language for this in the rule book.

I think this is almost certainly why the call and review went that way. Which leaves no room for a goalie who has been playing pretty out of his mind.

Let's let them talk before we kill them? Christ.

Sweeney will be measured, he typically always is, but I'd be stunned if he doesn't make a few pointed comments about the officiating and leagude decisions. I'm sure there will also be a heavy dose of "we've got to play through it." We'll probably come out of it happy that he said something but disappointed it wasn't the full flame thrower.

As for Maroon, he's the most logical candidate to talk. Swayman, Coyle and Pastrnak had their turn last night. Marchand is presumably in the protocol and thus unavailable. Maroon is the most veteran guy left in the room and has handled media in this series.

My guess is that Vancouver and others gave the league a whole bunch of shit for years about the Aaron Rome suspension (even today you can find Canucks fans on Reddit screaming about how unjust the suspension was) and ever since the league has gone out of its way to fuck the Bruins in order to show they aren't biased in favor of them ever.

Bennett is a repeat offender for this shit. He didn't even get a hearing. Christ.
I think a few things happened in that series and season and even the next season that helped build things up to how we have seen the last several years play out.

First, Chara "paralyzing" Pacioretty. Amazingly, but correctly, no supplemental discipline which I am sure the league never heard the end of from Montreal. This was kind of the beginning of peak Big Bad Bruins hysteria. Beating them in the playoffs just a pile of salt in the wound.

Then the Rome hit and suspension which turned the SCF, killing a shot at a Canadian cup. The narrative coming out of that series was nonetheless that the Bruins "beat up" the more skilled Canucks and got away with murder, famously exemplified by Marchand speed bagging one of the Sedins after a whistle. Lots of asinine narratives around preferential treatment for Colin Campbell's son's team. Johnny Canuck videos shared around league offices, tears in eyes, surely.

Then the next season there was a VERY heated rematch. Lots of fights, and Marchand upended someone and got a 10 min misconduct. Just kind of feeding the beast that the Big Bad Bruins were a dirty team while the league is shifting to favor speed and skill. Of course, the irony of the last many years now is that the Bruins BECAME a speed and skill team but we're still tagged with the old label in really bizarre ways. Marchand's licking, a remnant of the distant past at this point, remains a far worse infraction in the league's eyes than anything actually injurious to the league's players.

The comparison to the NFL league office is apt—this is a bunch of big dumbasses dressed up in suits. These are not sophisticated people.

Also ignores the highlight reels the NHL puts out of goalies making insane saves when they are completely out of position and the guy just has to tap in a puck

It will be a suspension, I think. You are responsible for your stick, the game was over, and it was another Canuck that put him in a bad position. Plus, whatever you think of the Oilers, McDavid does have a legitimate gripe that he gets the Gronk treatment — players get away with penalties on him that get called on others. It’s weird. I think several years of complaining about it culminates in player safety getting involved here.

The way the league has handled this makes me not even want to watch tomorrow night. It's hard enough to win a series as an underdog against a better team, but it's far worse to try to do so knowing that the league and the officials have tilted the ice against you to boot.

I'm pretty disgusted. I hope Donnie goes nuclear (he won't).

In other sports there seems to be a principle that you always assume a big league player can make a big league play, and the offending team doesn’t get the advantage of saying otherwise. Pass interference in football. Fouls in basketball on three pointers. Fan interference in baseball. Stuff like that. I’m not an expert on goalie interference reviews, but from what I’ve seen, they usually use similar logic.

I think in the NHL, Toronto gets input from the on ice officials and when they articulate a clear judgment ruling, maybe Toronto defers? Like if the ref says, “I was focused on the puck and didn’t get a great look at the push,” they review it less deferentially. But if the ref says, “I saw it the whole way and my judgment was there was no way he was making the play,” maybe they are more deferential?

Dunno. It’s an inexcusable call to me, whatever the process. There’s a rule that exists for a very specific purpose. Allow the keeper the chance to make saves. An attacking player thwarted it. The end. Goals are too valuable to fuck that up. It’s not like basketball where a bad judgment call maybe means two free throws out of 110 points. It really is infuriating, and if process got in the way of the reason we have replay, it just sucks. Having to take a two minute bad challenge penalty on top is awful.

I think Montgomery knows he is gone. He is preserving his league reputation over fighting the NHL on how they have officiated the series. Probably smart for his long term career but sucks for the team he currently coaches. Fuck him, i hope he doesn't work again if he won't support this team. Can't fight city hall, and city hall is Toronto.
How does Monty not standing up for his team preserve his reputation? If you're a President/GM, what about this inaction draws you to him as a candidate? Do you think the same relevant decision makers view Keefe less favorably? To keep this close to home (as much as it hurts but illustrates my point), do you think Berube will have trouble finding a job in the offseason? If Tampa ever lets Cooper go, do you think he won't get picked up?

This shit show probably cost Jacobs $10 million bucks, so I’m if that doesn’t get him up Bettman’s ass, I don’t know what will.
Judging from the emails between league people that got leaked during that deposition a few years ago, it’s the same kind of internal politics that go on at most big companies happening at the league office. I don't follow the ownership situation as closely as I used to, but Jacobs basically has to be a league-friendly owner. He's the Chairman of the League Board of Governors! The tension here is that league-friendly owners typically get to make big decisions affecting the league (more focused on financials/economics than anything else, e.g., PA negotiations, expansion, relocation, etc.) and toe the company line when the league is under scrutiny. OTOH, squeaky owners will poke the league at basically try to draw scrutiny when they feel mistreated. Both things can be true to some extent, Jacobs could greenlight some pushback based on last night and still be in the league's good graces, but typically one aspect wins out. It's almost certainly more important to his bottom line to remain in a position of league power than any benefit from fans thinking he sticks up for his club, or authorizes his FO to do so.

Toronto is kind of a unique position, in that the club is in the geographic epicenter of the hockey world, so they can have their cake and eat it too. Kinda like the NY Giants in a way, even though the Maras have been pretty pro-league from what I can remember. OTOH, and I don't want to relitigate all of the Pats' stuff, but from my recollection Kraft came out pretty clearly pro-league and the Pats took their lumps relatively quietly.

The other end of the spectrum is Mark Cuban. Is there a similar owner(s) in the NHL? How does their FO handle similar controversies? Did it make a difference?

Friedman/Marek's take from today's pod. They do carry water from the league but I thought they had reasonable takes.

The bolded is what drives me insane. Also, the contemporary calls on similar plays in the playoffs. I mean, that Cirelli play!??!? It baffles that the TB play was waved off (it should've stood), and last night's was upheld. They're such different instances of the "same play" that there's plenty of gray area to come up with a better standard. I have to stop, because my head is going to explode.

I was thinking about this in much the same terms. I remember a PI flag that got picked up or not thrown because a pass to Gronk was deemed uncatchable, but he really just would have had to tap it with one hand to himself. And, it struck me as insane, because he’s a guy who can do that. I don’t think it’s inexcusable for officials to have that level of discretion (though I oppose additional discretion in hockey because the dozen or so factors besides the rulebook that refs very consciously take into account destroy consistency already), but the issue should be one of physical impossibility rather than a baseball error-esque analysis of “greater than normal effort” or something.

My biggest problem is there is no language in the rulebook to allow for a goal to stand if they determine the goalie wasn't going to make the save without being contacted.

It'd be one thing if there was actual language that allowed for a judgement like "uncatchable" for DPI in the NFL. There isn't. The rule says if the defending player gets pushed into his own goalie and a goal occurs it is to be disallowed.

Yes, sorry if I was unclear. I agree with that in terms of strict rule analysis. If you squint, you can possibly read something kinda maybe sorta like that into what actually prevents the goalie from playing his position (like, does the contact actually prevent him from playing his position if he had absolutely no hope of making the play anyway?), but I also agree that doing so is a huge stretch.
