I don’t know if this deserves its own thread, but it’s a long write up on the rape scandals associated with the 86 Mets, centering on a gang rape accusation against Gooden, Coleman and Boston. It also discusses allegations made against Cone and Dykstra.
Thank you for linking, that was pretty powerful. I remember it well, I was in my 20s at the time--spent lots of time at those bars like Perfect Tommys, American Trash, Wildlife...while I didn't know the victim, I was acquainted with many in her circle. No one I knew doubted her story--and it was just kind of assumed that the players skated because of wealth and fame. It ruined her life, and I'm glad the article recounts the story.

I'm pretty sure one of the rules of covering baseball is assuming that anything coming out of Nails's mouth is a lie.

Are you under the impression that a claim by Dykstra has anything to do with anything that we are discussing?
I'm saying that Nails probably did it and is trying to save face by a frivilous lawsuit against Darling.

The confusion stems from the fact that the thread was bumped (and the discussion was about) a different article from that same period. And Dykstra really isn't a part of that discussion.

In fairness, Dykstra is mentioned in the article as facing multiple accusations of sexual assault:

In 2011, three-time All-Star Lenny Dykstra’s former housekeeper accused him of forcing her to perform oral sex. Dykstra denied it—“This is a maid. That’s not even worth commenting on,” he said—and prosecutors decided not to file charges, saying there wasn’t enough evidence that the oral sex was forced. A year later, Dykstra went to jail after pleading no contest to charges of lewd conduct and assault with a deadly weapon; he’d recruited women for a job as his personal assistant via Craigslist, then stripped naked and demanded massages when they came in for interviews. When one of these women refused, he held a knife to her throat.

It’s insane to me how many accusations were levied against members of that team.

I somehow have no recollection of this. I remember the stuff about Cone in the bullpen, but the rest I don't remember at all. What a bunch of bastards. Sick, sick stuff.

A judge has dismissed Lenny Dykstra's defamation and libel lawsuit against Ron Darling, ruling that the former New York Mets outfielder's "reputation for unsportsmanlike conduct and bigotry is already so tarnished that it cannot be further injured."

The closing summation is almost as delightful:

It’s one thing to have everyone on the planet think you’re a scumbag, but it’s another thing altogether for a court to rule that, as a matter of law, you’re a scumbag. That takes years of work to do, really.

I hear you. I just fume when I see players trash former teammates with character assassinations. Schiraldi didn't fail because he was a loser; a loser doesn't slam the door in a 1-0 World Series game on the road, right? Schiraldi was COOKED. 55 pitches, 3rd inning of work....I mean, the guy was probably gassed.

What the Mets are doing is trying to ascribe their championship to character. We won because we're better people. To which I say, given all that's transpired in the time that's passed since they won: FUCK THAT NOISE. They are clearly mostly objectively terrible people who were really good at baseball.
I agree. Even if you're going to send Schiraldi out for a third inning in that situation, you better have someone else ready from the get-go just in case.

There's plenty of blame to go around but between that and Stapleton being on the bench, McNamara will always be my scapegoat.

Old Guy time out: I remember Sparky Lyle throwing 5 2/3 innings of relief in the playoffs against KC. Might have been a Game 5. 1977? I will look it up. Just trying to make the point that relief pitching didn’t really get specialized until Eck and the A’s, 10 years ago Sparky. That was Gossage’s whole point when complaining about modern save totals.

update: It was Game 4, 1977. Forced a decisive fifth game.

Also, Schiraldi pitched three or more innings six times after he joined Boston in July 1986. He finished four games in the ALCS. But the Mets had his number. I forgot they knew him well because Schiraldi pitched for the Mets briefly in 1984-85. They must have known Cal threw a heater with no movement.
