First game Sunday at 1 PM EST against the Blue Jays, Michael King starting.

Because teams have fewer players in camp this year, games will be 7 innings until March 13, unless the managers agree to play 9 or 5 (!) beforehand.

Yankees are scheduled to play 190 games over the next 218 days, that is the happiest sentence I have read in a while.

We need baseball more than ever, with a season that begins carefully and hits full stride in summer with fans gradually returning to parks as the pandemic wanes. I will watch the first few innings tomorrow.

Also I saw somewhere that 23 of NY’s 28 spring games will be televised, that has to be the most ever.

King is doing better than our old buddy Ivan Nova for the Phillies today, 5 ERs while just getting one out.

I am watching on delay, but if this was a real game, Judge would have caught Semien’s flare in the 1st and King’s outing would have looked a lot better.

Stanton in LF and Frazier at DH would be better for the team than vice versa, it will be interesting to watch how this develops this season.

Only saw the 6th inning of this one, was the non-mask wearing in the crowd shots as bad in the rest of the game?

I know it doesn't work that way, but I'm trying to convince myself that Stanton regularly working LF would keep him stretched out and injury free.

Absolutely a majestic shot by Sanchez. Near dead center, over the batter’s eye. The pitch to do so had no movement but that is a special brand of strength, from your catcher no less.

Michael Kay sure repeats a lot of faulty info, he just was raving about how well Cole clicked with Chirinos in HOU. In our time-space continuum, Martin Maldonado became Cole's personal catcher in the middle of that season and caught every one of his starts the rest of the way.

I’m all for ripping Kay, especially of late as you say, but I’m not sure I’d choose this example to do so. As much as MM fulfilled this role down the stretch like you noted, the Cole-Chirinos combo in 2019 resulted in the following for Gerrit in 69 innings pitched: 1.57 ERA, 114 K, and 11 BB. Not a great sample size, of course.

You are transposing Maldonado and Chirinos' numbers, Chirinos had a 2.46 cERA with Cole that year in 102 innings.

Wow, I missed dingers like those. Prodigious power from Gittens, always enjoyed how hard he hits the ball. A few years ago, second best average EV in baseball, including minors, behind only Gallo.

Should be said, I hate that kind of delivery by Zack Hess, strictly from a pitcher’s perspective. Michael Bowden had it for the Red Sox and Cubs back in the day. It exposes too much of the ball for too long at peak point prior to wind and release, so you can cheat it more easily than most.

Gittens was the MVP of the league in AA in 2019, glad he hasn’t been picked off in the rule 5.

I keep forgetting that Andujar is on this team. A lot to prove for him this year and hopefully he gets off to a hot start in Spring Training. Would be a really nice trade chip if he could hit again.

12-0 Phils in 7th. Guess we won’t have to worry how to spell Wojciechowski. Or Abreu. They took the brunt of a 9-run Phillies outburst in the fourth.

Big props to the Yankees pitching coach/interim manager for not ending the 4th inning before it ran its course. Fun inning. 7th was ok too.

More evidence as to why Abreu isn't close to being ready, I wonder how long NY has known he had a 4th option (the rest of us just learned a few days ago).

Domingo German gets the start today, his first appearance in pinstripes since late 2019 before he self-immolated.

If you replace Brett and Andujar with Clint and Gio, this looks like an Opening Day lineup.

DJ LeMahieu 2B
Aaron Judge RF
Aaron Hicks CF
Giancarlo Stanton DH
Luke Voit 1B
Gleyber Torres SS
Brett Gardner LF
Gary Sanchez C
Miguel Andújar 3B

Against the Tigers and Spencer Torkelson, 1 PM on YES.

German looked good, 2 1 0 0 0 4, 3 of the 4 Ks on changeups, touched 94 with the FB and was sitting 92-93.

Bad weather in Florida today has NY delayed but maybe starting very soon.

Taillon gets the start against his previous Pirate teammates, and all three outfielders are competing for that final bench spot (unless they start with five bench players and four SPs as I think they will):

Mike Tauchman CF
Gio Urshela 3B
Jay Bruce RF
Clint Frazier DH
Derek Dietrich LF
Mike Ford 1B
Kyle Higashioka C
Tyler Wade 2B
Thairo Estrada SS

Jay Bruce homers in his first AB, he is now 4-5 this spring with a double and a homer.

I'm kind of hoping that Bruce is the one who makes the cut. I haven't been able to watch anything, so I haven't seen him defensively at all. I hope he's at least adequate out there.

I don't think he would play OF much as he would be the sixth OF behind Judge/Hicks/Clint/Gardner/Stanton, he would backup 1B and DH and maybe play some in NY's small RF.

Yeah, I know he's in RF today; I was thinking mostly about 1B. Adequate in RF would be a nice bonus though if Judge/Hicks/Stanton keep getting injured.

Edit: As you've pointed out before, I don't think there is any question that if Bruce makes the team, it is in place of Ford.

Montgomery is the first NY pitcher so far this spring to go 3 innings, 3 2 0 0 0 1.

Also Stanton ripped a double into the left field corner at 109 MPH, prompting the YES stat guy to tweet this amazing and hilarious stat:

MLB Hardest-Hit Ball of Season

2015 Giancarlo Stanton 120.3 MPH
2016 Giancarlo Stanton 120.1 MPH
2017 Giancarlo Stanton 122.2 MPH
2018 Giancarlo Stanton 121.7 MPH
2019 Giancarlo Stanton 120.6 MPH
2020 Giancarlo Stanton 121.3 MPH

The best part of that is that he only had 72 regular season PAs in 2019 and still ended up first.

NY's bullpen is very crowded, but Lucas Luetge looks great. He is a 33 year old lefty who hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2015 and who seems to top out around 90 MPH, but he just struck out the side on 12 pitches, McCutchen, Gregorius, Bryce Harper (!!!). This makes his spring numbers so far: 3 2 0 0 0 8.

Also now that I'm actually watching, the only two hits off Montgomery were a bloop just over Gleyber's head and a 40 foot dribbler down the third base line.
