Elias seems like the inevitable choice. I am hoping he can keep up the good recent work.

Cuevas's peripherals are not good (6.21 K/9 3.61 bb/9 0.72 HR/9 .247 Babip 80.0 % LOB, 2.74 ERA/ 4.10 FIP). Aaron Wilkerson, on the other hand, looks intriguing statistically speaking. Will he be the next up--given that E-Rod probably needs more time rehabbing?

Worth noting that the start on Friday might not lead to more starts regardless of his performance...

Sean McAdam @Sean_McAdam
Elias starts Friday, with Porcello pushed back to Sat. Elias in rotation isn't necessarily permanent but Sox like match-up this time

Alex Speier @alexspeier
Elias will start for Sox on Friday vs Mariners. Farrell said decision was in no small part matchup based. (Sea has hammered RHPs.)

I'm confused - rotation was going to be Porcello, Wright, Price. Who are they bumping? SEA has hammered RHPs, so it can't be Price. But Wright has been by far the best starter on this team, so they couldn't possibly reduce the number of starts they're trying to give him.

They're not bumping anyone, they're just pushing everyone back a day so no one is going on short rest. Elias on Friday, Porcello on Saturday (5 days rest), Price on Sunday (4 days rest), Wright on Monday (4 days rest). They chose Elias to make the start because they want two LHP to start against the Mariners.

Wright is pitching tomorrow. They needed another starter by Saturday.

Cano and Seager have significant platoon splits, and the Mariners as a team are built for power to RF. This seems as a good a time as any to start Ruinous Elias.

Nice.

Yeah, he's been pitching well lately, and the Mariners are pretty heavily LH and have never faced Elias in a Game That Matters. Cruz and Dae-ho Lee could give him some trouble, though. People are sleeping on Dae-ho this year. I mean, yeah, he does not look...athletic...but he does look like a decent hitter. Still, seems like the perfect time to give Elias a shot.

Yes, but they could have kept Porcello on regular rest and still had two LHP starting against the Mariners. Elias' last start was Friday, so maybe minimizing his rest and giving Porcello an extra day are both factors in the decision.

So a three man bench consisting of Marco, Leon/Vasquez and Rusney or a banged up Young which could mean a two man bench including your catcher which is essentially a one man bench. Would be a HUGE help if the offense can put this one away early tonight.

Good velocity, tons of movement, poor command and control -- and by poor, I mean awful. He tried to nibble, but missed by feet, then got wild in the strike zone. His delivery could be tough on lefties, but has easy visibility to the other side of the platoon: RHB devoured these belt-high pitches.

In addition to the above, which is interesting (Thanks, Sprowl!) is there no thought given to the emotional element of pitching to your former team? Once they started hitting him, the stress must have been intense. Also, who knows his weaknesses better than the team that let him go?

This was also another case of Farrell being asleep at the switch to me. Girardi or Showalter would not have let Elias face Gutierez again with the bases loaded. Hembree was t ready at that point, but they would have had him up earlier or had Elias make 4 throws to first base interspersed with people untying and re-tying their shoes until he was.
