Probably more likely that Matt Quatraro would be.If the Dodgers lose the World Series and Dave Roberts gets fired, would Roberts be a candidate?
Mostly agreed. My primary concern in regards to Cora is that he might not want to take the job right now with the team not looking to be very competitive next year.I will note once again that these are all people they could've hired before the season, but didn't. They even interviewed Urueta back then! What could have changed since then?
To me, this suggests that the hope and maybe expectation is the return of Cora, and these other candidates are in case he takes a different job - he is a free agent, after all. At a minimum, I think this idea that Bloom has some super-secret candidate in mind doesn’t quite scan to me.
As BMHH suggests, Matt Quatraro is a very likely target for Bloom who is not yet available for interviews while the Rays are still playing. He was a name that came up last spring but was not interviewed because Bloom wouldn't (or couldn't) "raid" his former team for staff. A season later, that's unlikely to be an issue any longer.I will note once again that these are all people they could've hired before the season, but didn't. They even interviewed Urueta back then! Ive seen this a few places now. Rays coaches off limits for 2 years to Bloom.Cotillo says Quataro is “not a candidate.” Maybe disinformation, but he’s fairly connected.
The last time we got a Mendoza from the Yankees it didn't work out so well (the first year, anyway). Hard pass.Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza has also interviewed.
You already have a home in Boston, perhaps? If you're Cora (or anybody else for that matter), why is Boston a better job than the White Sox? Way better young talent base (including... wait for it... Pitching!) in Chicago, lesser divisional competition, less media headaches...
Has Cora been rumored to the White Sox? I thought they were more interested in Hinch if they don't make the hilarious choice of an antique La Russa. If you're Cora (or anybody else for that matter), why is Boston a better job than the White Sox? Way better young talent base (including... wait for it... Pitching!) in Chicago, more resources to trade for a needed piece at the deadline, lesser divisional competition, less media headaches...
You're also sharing the spotlight with the Cubs. Some guys like that limelight. If you're Cora (or anybody else for that matter), why is Boston a better job than the White Sox? You aren't even really sharing it. The White Sox are the 5th team in Chicago. Okay, maybe tied for 4th with the Bulls. Some might like that, some might not. You're also sharing the spotlight with the Cubs. Some guys like that limelight.
They've already done, what, 4+ interviews, right? That to me is somewhat a sign Cora isn't a lock for this.I would think they’d wait a few days, interview him and maybe a couple of others, just to give the appearance of having a process.
Even assuming they want Cora, they need a backup plan in case Cora doesn't want to return to the Red Sox.They've already done, what, 4+ interviews, right? That to me is somewhat a sign Cora isn't a lock for this.
I'd have to think this has informally been figured out months ago.Even assuming they want Cora, they need a backup plan in case Cora doesn't want to return to the Red Sox.
This story should blow up regardless of whether anyone else in the park last night gets COVID. They were supposed to be quarantined in a "bubble" to prevent infections. That was the whole point of doing the neutral site stuff...minimize travel and limit outside contact for the players so teams wouldn't lose players. MLB was proudly touting their zero positive tests since the playoffs began. So the big question right now isn't "will other Dodgers (or Rays or media) contract COVID from Turner?" it's "how did he contract it in the first place?" What protocols did he break prior to last night? Why, when he had an inconclusive test on Monday that prompted the re-test, did the Dodgers proceed as if he was cleared instead of isolating him and, you know, not putting him in the lineup for Game 6?MLB news should rightfully focus on the WS Champion Dodgers for a few days. As an aside, I can't believe Justin Turner sat next to Dave Roberts for a team pic sans mask knowing he tested positive earlier that day. If Roberts or anyone else on the Dodgers gets COVID, this story will really blow up.
We all know the reason for that, though. Why, when he had an inconclusive test on Monday that prompted the re-test, did the Dodgers proceed as if he was cleared instead of isolating him and, you know, not putting him in the lineup for Game 6?
Even if they plan on hiring Cora, and it’s essentially a done deal, how often does a team interview one candidate and then hire them? They've already done, what, 4+ interviews, right? That to me is somewhat a sign Cora isn't a lock for this.
The interviewees get their names “out there” as potential managerial candidates also, so they’re benefitting too, even if it is a charade, as that can lead to them getting interviewed by other teams in the future (or present)Even if they plan on hiring Cora, and it’s essentially a done deal, how often does a team interview one candidate and then hire them?
Not sure the politics in regards to MLB hiring, but I would think teams would at least want the optics of the opportunity being accessible to anyone who may be interested.
Granted, they only interviewed Chaim Bloom for his position, but “considered” multiple internal candidates. Different situations, however, since you can’t really seriously “consider” external candidates without an interview.
I agree with this, I say Sunday evening Cora is announced, it will be a football Sunday and the election will be 40 hours away.Detroit hiring AJ Hinch would potentially give the Red Sox some cover to let the media focus on that story first and rehash everything, and then have the Sox announce Cora as manager right as it dies down and there is not as much national appetite to hear it all again.
At least, that is what I am going with because I am at the point of wanting him back officially.
According to multiple industry sources, the Red Sox have been in contact with former manager Alex Cora multiple times since Tuesday, when his season-long suspension – the result of an MLB investigation into sign-stealing by the 2017 Astros – ended with the conclusion of the World Series.
It is unknown how Cora’s candidacy is viewed by the Red Sox. He remains extremely popular with many members of the organization at the ownership, front office, and player levels.
...
Some of those candidates, according to one major league source, have been informed that they are no longer in consideration for the managerial position. Others, according to multiple major league sources, have had a second interview with the Red Sox, and the team has met with some candidates in person.
Kelly, the Pirates bench coach, and Mendoza, the Yankees bench coach, both interviewed a second time, according to major league sources.
Wait, wait, wait. I thought Cora was a done deal? The other guys were just getting token interviews. Second interviews strikes me as a bit more than a token effort. I'll take that as a sign that Bloom wants to treat Cora like the rest of the candidates rather than everything being pre-ordained.
I think there is some sort of election?sorry if im being dense here, what are we expecting on tuesday ?
Please don't do that Chaim....I don't want Dan Shaughnessy to be correct about anything.Maybe they'll drop it Tuesday, when other managerial matters may be distracting attention.
Which somehow impacts a managerial hiring in MLB? Or further the announcement of one? Jesus fuck we have become so entitled around here.I think there is some sort of election?
Because the implication was that, since rehiring Cora might be controversial, they might want to do it when news + public attention is elsewhere? Seems pretty straightforward, although I doubt this is actually factoring into the Sox decision making process.Which somehow impacts a managerial hiring in MLB? Or further the announcement of one? I understand the implication, thanks, but your follow up is my point. I highly doubt the Sox are waiting for the election - which results won't be announced or even remotely predictable until well after hours - to distract from them announcing they are bringing back Cora. It's ludicrous.Because the implication was that, since rehiring Cora might be controversial, they might want to do it when news + public attention is elsewhere?
