Any GB fans here? Will the Packers be able to get any mileage out of implicitly blaming Rodgers for financially hamstringing them for a year or two, or do the fans blame the team for "letting him go"?
I really don't think that GB has much in the way of post-2023 implications if they trade Rodgers before June 1.

So much cap reporting is based on what it will mean for the team in a particular year. For example, there is reporting that Rodgers is actually affordable for the Jets because he will cost "only" $15 million against the cap this year. True. But there's no free lunch. Rodgers is due about $108 million the next two years. Whatever team acquires him will have to take on $108 million cap hits for having him for two years. The only question is when. Yes, you can reduce it this year, but $108 million is $108 million. That's how much space he will eat up. Put simply, the cost of acquiring Rodgers, in addition to whatever trade comp you give, is about $54 million in cap space per year for two years of having him. Could some of that be pushed to the 2026 cap? Yep. It's still a shit ton of cap space to give up.

Similarly, for the Packers, this is the amount they will save by getting rid of him. Yes, they will have to accelerate his bonus, and take on a $40 million cap hit. But that's misleading because they were already going to have a big hit for him this year. The net is that they need to make about $10 million in room to trade him. And then after 2023, they are done. No mas. $108 million comes off the cap for 2024 and 2025.

I don't personally think any player in the NFL is worth taking on a $54 million cap hit each year for 2 years, no matter when you end up paying the bill. That the Jets would have to give compensation in addition is crazy to me.

Again -- there's over $100 million cap room that a team that plays Rodgers will have to eat. If you think that's a lot, then the Packers are good to get rid of him. If you think it's not, then the Jets are good to pick it up.

A couple co-workers that I've talked to are ready for a reset. Felt they were likely looking at another mediocre year with Rodgers so might as well move on now and start building for 2024+

I'm confused about the Schefter tweet. Did I miss some context where Schefter tried to one up AR before AR went on the podcast?
Thank you, I was wondering if I was the only one who didn't get the joke. Still don't.
Oh, my bad. yes. Schefter texted him to try and get some inside information. Rodgers talked a while back about how insiders don't actually know anything and his general annoyance with them.

I've been a Packers fan since 1967 but I don't keep close tabs on the finances. As for Rodgers, he wore out his welcome long ago. We're going to take our lumps for a while but good riddance.

The Schefter thing is this:
Rodgers said in the interview that someone gave Schefter his number and he told him "Lose my number. Good try though.", then Schefter tweeted that screen shot of the text using the language he uses when confirming other media reports.

He instantly becomes the second best QB in Jets history behind Namath, I can just see the NY media fawning all over the guy and kissing his ass.

This is a franchise that since 1969 has been to four AFCCG's, that's less than one per decade and zero Super Bowls, the age of the average Jets fan who honestly remembers their lone Super Bowl win/appearance is north of 60.

If he wins a Super Bowl as a Jet, he'll be forever a hero, more like a God; if he does not, the reaction will be "Whatever, same old Jets."
Yeah, I can see that if he doesn't do well, it'll be seen more like "Even the great Aaron Rodgers couldn't overcome Jetsiness", which wouldn't be a stain on his legacy

I mean if we're just talking about how good they were for their careers, not just with the Jets he's clearly #1 and Namath isn't even #2.

Absolutely agreed, which is why they'll want picks from NYJ to help with that rebuilding process. However, they will have Jordan Love, who seemed to do pretty well last year in relief and has his own financial future to consider (so has every reason to go balls-out even when rebuilding), so it's not a complete death knell for the franchise.
I get it, but personally, I've never been a huge Jordan Love guy. I think they can tank this season and still figure out what they have in him along the way. I mean, he's looked serviceable in his extremely limited amount of playing time, so who knows. But there's no reason to think they can't do what the Bears just did and let him play, put nothing around him and finish 3-14, and still end up with a top pick in the draft. If they like Love, teams will be lining up to give them a king's ransom for the rights to Williams or Maye next season. If they don't and he sucks, then they go and get one of them.

I think it puts the Packers in a pretty darn good spot both for the future, and in terms of leverage with the Jets.

In all the coverage the other day, NFLN (I think) ran the list of most passing yards in a season by Jets quarterbacks ... and Namath's 1967 season is still at the top. It's amazing, you'd have to think only the Bears rival that stretch of quarterback inadequacy

Innocent question, but how is not tampering for the Jets to meet with Rodgers while he’s under contract with GB? Does that require permission from GB?

I also don’t think GB is lacking leverage. They have the player and they'll take a hit this year whether he gets traded or sits out/retires. The Jets are the more desperate party.

GB gave him permission to speak to other teams.

True, but Rodgers lurking around has the potential to make the Jordan Love era that much more uncomfortable. I don't functionally know how he would do that, I just assume he would figure it out. It does seem like the Jets are completely out of other meaningfully better options except Lamar, which is a whole different path.

Same. They just aren't meeting my asking price. I don't know why exactly, but in a sportsworld full of clowns (and worse), this guy's schtick bothers me the most (non-criminal division).
It was said in the thread. Maybe not the general belief. This is not official yet so I don’t need to go full T.O.
This is what was said. I don't think it's crazy to say that other than the guys who committed crimes, or who are suspected of committing crimes, Rodgers may be the most disliked player in the league around here.

Kellen Clemens, Kyle Mackey, Luke Fack, Rick Mirer, Jack Trudeau and Matt Robinson don't move the needle for you?

What a sad sack collection of stiffs they've had for quarterbacks.

My guess is that the Jordon Love era is a short-lived one in any case. Rodgers lurking around and fully tanking GB next year may actually be to their long-term benefit. This is all easy to say as a dispassionate observer. If I was a Packers fan I'd be wrankled. And it's hard to run a franchise with a cloud hanging over it.

If they cant agree, GB can give it the old "I guess we value Aaron more highly than the Jets do."

I think the best thing about the Rodgers thing is that despite how secretive he thinks he is all the reporting was 100% accurate & his big announcement was just confirming everything that everyone already knew.

I got no sense that Rodgers actually wants to play for the Jets. To me that interview made it patently clear he intended to string the Packers along and make his mind up on retiring at his leisure while keeping everyone waiting for him and once that power move was taken away by the knowledge Green Bay didn't want to deal with that bullshit and was making way for Jordan Love, he chose to return out of sheer spite.

Don't think he loves the game, don't think he'll do what Brady and Peyton did and immediately start working out and diving deep into the playbook/organize throwing sessions with new team mates, he's going to half heartedly go through the motions just as he did last year because he's not excited to prove the Packers wrong by showing he's great, he just wants to show he has full control over his destiny. That version of Rodgers may very well be enough to make the Jets a playoff team, but they aren't going anywhere.

At some point, though, Green Bay needs to stop playing chicken. The Jets may not wait forever. I don’t know if there is another team out there willing to take a cap hit of $108 million. If the Jets say “we are moving on,” GB is totally screwed. They can’t cut him. They can have a disgruntled baby playing for them for outrageous cap hits for the next two years.

I think Lamar Jackson's situation is the wild card here. While that's still an option for the Jets, they have some "fuck this we'll just pay a crazy amount for Lamar" leverage.

Once Lamar goes somewhere the Jets are kinda screwed being the last team without a QB. Yes, they could try to trade for Stafford or something, but offering Lamar a contract structured so that it would be super hard for Balitmore to match is an easy out for them right now. That's what they should be pushing to get something done.

Maybe I missed it, but is there a particular reason why this hasn't been Plan A for them all along?

I don't have a real answer to this, because that's what I actually think the Jets should do.

But, from listening to all the media in this area, I think the Jets' thinking all along has been we can make a run with a short money and time fix (rodgers) and then either draft again or pray that Wilson develops at all. I think they want to get back to a young QB (money-wise) and develop a roster around that.

Also, I think Woody Johnson just fell in love with the idea of Aaron Rodgers.

yeah, GB has the least bad options in this whole thing. Especially since Rodgers may well retire if they don't trade him, or no-show so they can fine him.

Jets' options are ROUGH. Best QB left in FA is.... Wentz? Matt Ryan? They could I guess try to trade for Tannehill?

The Packers are taking a monster cap hit whether they trade him or not. Maybe rejecting a 3rd or 4th round pick and letting AR rot on the bench is preferable.

The Packers can go into the season with Rodgers on the bench. Whether hes on the bench in GB or playing for the Jets, It barely changes their cap situation at all. The Jets, however, can't start the season with the QBs they have in the room. In fact, the Jets may be willing to pay more in week 7 when they're 3-4 and a good QB away from the top of the division.

This isn't really true, I don't think. If the Packers trade him, their 2023 cap for him goes from about $31 to $41 million. So, they take on $10 million this year, but then they are done.

If they don't trade him, they take on $105.3 million in additional cap hits (in addition to the $31 million), spread over 3 years. Devoting $108 million over 3 years for a player on the bench would not be ideal.

Yeah, my read on this situation is that the Packers are acting less desperate, but they need this to get done just as much as NYJ does, for the cap-related reasons you state.

Honestly, I don't know which franchise seems more desperate at the moment - the Jets trying to pry AR away from GB, or the Patriots trying to sign.... I dunno... anyone good.

Rodgers will end up with the Jets. GB will extract an extra 3rd round pick or so to ensure that this gets done in the next 10 days or so. My guess is it looks like a #2 and a #4 this year and a #3 next year that can end up a # 2, if playoffs, and X amount of touchdowns.,

Rodgers is preferable to Lamar because somehow he will be cheaper with less guaranteed money and years.

If the Jets sign Lamar, don’t they owe two 1st round picks to the Ravens on top of the money all with the potential that the Ravens match the offer? Just give up a 1st and a 2nd for Q-Aaron and be done with it.

and then suck and be miserable and sad.
