I guess I'm at the point where anything is better than running it back with another year of lame-duck Boeheim and the zone. We have to turn the page and get started on the next phase. I have very low expectations for anybody they bring in (the record of coaches following these program-building legends is abysmal) but you have to start somewhere.

Yep. Tear the band-aid off. Be terrible for a few seasons. Rebuild the brand. The Dome is still an awesome place to play and even though the crowds have sucked, SU is still drawing 18k plus every game, so the potential audience is still huge. And there's tons of history, plus SU plays in a major conference. Lots of pluses there for the next coach (or the next, next coach) to work with.

But it's going to be rough for a few years, no doubt. But man, it's TIME.

That encapsulated SU in every way possible. Give up a tying shot in the middle of the paint (not an easy one, mind you, but still). Then have the ball with a chance to take the lead in the last few seconds. Run an absolutely godawful set where the ball ends up in Girard's hands, needing to go one-on-one (which is absolutely NOT what he's good at), and predictably, he takes a terrible shot, and bricks it.

That awful possession is immediately followed by the defense leaving a good shooter absolutely WIDE OPEN for the game-winning three pointer. Buried. Game. Season. Over.

You have to wonder if Wildhack and SU leadership have reached the point of telling Boeheim 'it's over'. I don't think they can afford to give him one more year for the going-away tour.

Well, the first good news of the Autry era is upon us. JJ Starling is transferring to Syracuse. I would assume this means Judah Mintz is leaving, but if he's not, that's a great backcourt. They still need to replace Edwards, but if Autry can keep everybody other than Mintz and Edwards, it's a flawed but far from terrible returning core. Let's see how it all plays out.

No confirmation either way, but Mintz has been dropping hints he may be staying.

If it happens, Mintz and Starling have the potential to be the best backcourt in many many years in Syracuse.

Has Edwards said he’s leaving? I think he has one more year if he wants to stay.

Mintz is testing the waters of the NBA draft. I have seen him in the second round of most mocks (ESPN has him as a first round pick next year, fwiw). He has stated he's keeping his eligibility for now, so we'll see where that lands. I assumed when they signed Starling that this was the most likely result.

Mintz has no business being in the NBA next year (he's not nearly an NBA player right now). That doesn't mean he shouldn't explore his options, and if he feels he wants to get his career started (in the G league or somewhere else), no on should begrudge him that. As a player, he isn't NBA caliber at this time IMO.

No argument. I think he can get there, and he may be a case where he improves more by playing in the G League. We'll have to see. If he chooses to come back, that'd be great. If not, I think Starling slots into his place pretty nicely.

Re: Edwards -- I have heard that because he's not a citizen, the NIL stuff is complicated for him. He'd have to either get a different sort of visa or something. I can't see how it doesn't make sense for him to go play in Europe, but maybe he maximizes his pro opportunities by staying a year, proving he can play man-to-man, etc. I'd love to have him back.

Yeah with a new philosophy and these guys returning, I think SU could actually be pretty good next year, better than they've been in a while. But if they lose Edwards, it's a big blow.

Joe Girard has announced that he's leaving, either for the draft (ok) or the transfer portal. I admit I thought he could be useful as an off the bench sniper if they wanted to play more man-to-man, but I imagine he wasn't interested in returning for a reduced role. I'll be curious to see where he lands.

I've always said that he'd be a perfect guy to be on a mid-major team. He'd get as many shots as he'd want, and probably average 20+ a game.

Jesse Edwards transfers to West Virginia.

"I mostly wanted to have a fresh start and a new challenge," Edwards said. "NIL isn't what I'm playing for. I didn't really want to get into this, but it doesn't seem that Syracuse as an organization is that into that. I'm not really sure what their plan is or what the school's idea is behind it. For me it was something that they couldn't offer in that way." (from the ESPN article)

They will certainly be more athletic and more interesting next year.

G- Mintz
G- Starling
F- Bell
F- Williams
C- McLeod (can't teach height, baby!)

G- Westry
G- Copeland
F- Taylor
F- Brown
C- Hima

Cuffe, Carey, Patterson as developmental projects.

Lots of high-end recruits at the guard spot. Before he got hurt, Westry was getting one-and-done buzz at Auburn. Starling and Mintz were both ACC all-freshman team last year. Maybe Williams can make a junior year leap. Probably another high-variance team, but at least they won't be tied down by the zone.
