Apologies if this was already posted somewhere else.

One time a friend of mine and I were talking about an all time Red Sox opponent team, guys who always seemed to come up big against the Sox. I had Tony Fernandez on my all opponent team. Maybe it was just my perception , but it seemed like he always played well against the Sox.

Your memory serves you correctly. In 136 games and 558 PA, he slashed .329/.380/.435 against the Sox. Much better than his career .288/.347/.399 line.

Excellent player and seemed like a very respectable guy. Unfortunately, I'll always remember him for booting a routine grounder in '97. I swear I only wish this kind of thing on Jose Mesa though.

Looked like Rod Carew at the plate, didn't he? (Especially against the Sox)

Man, Tony was my favorite player growing up. When I played pitch and hit baseball in my friend's dead end as a kid, he was the Red Sox and I was the Blue Jays. Tony Fe always batted first.

Great player, sad to hear he's gone.

57 is too young.

If memory serves, Jeter wasn't supposed to start the '96 season as the Yankees' starting SS. The plan was to shift Fernandez to 2B (splitting time with Mariano Duncan) when Jeter was deemed ready to take over at SS. He wound up getting injured in Spring Training (broken arm diving to make a play). The rest is history.

RIP

Fernandez and McGriff for Alomar and Carter ... you don't see trades like that anymore

I know the Fernandez deal was more complicated than than just him for Alomar, but weird that both that and Ozzie Smith for Garry Templeton worked out so similarly for San Diego.
