More sad news. Gary Peters, who played for the BoSox from 1970 to 1972 passed away. He was 85.

I saw him pitch for the White Sox at Fenway in 1968 in my very first major league game I attended. I was a huge fan when he was traded to Boston. He had a short career in Boston, but he meant a lot to me as a young 10 year old. Thank you for wonderful memories.....

.601 career ops w/19 homers; used a lot as a pinch hitter. Final year in the bigs turned out to be the final year of the hitting pitcher in the AL.

The pre-DH era in the AL was a bit before my time, but I do recall that Rick Wise was a decent hitter in the NL before coming to the Red Sox.

Also, having looked into the subject a bit, I learned about 'Bullet' Joe Bush, who pitched for the Sox from 1918-1921, batting .253 for his career (.325 in 1921). If Wiki is to be believed, he is also credited with inventing the forkball.

The Red Sox stole him from the White Sox in 1969. Gary Peters and Don Pavletich for Syd O'Brien, Gerry Janeski and Billy Farmer. God bless Gary Peters.

Love those good hitting pitchers. We should do an all time Sox lineup. I'll throw out Peters, Earl Wilson and Sonny Siebert for starters.

RIP Gary
Saw Siebert hit a HR in my very first game at Fenway.

I think Peters’ sojourn with the Red Sox was seen as a disappointment given the heights he had reached with the White Sox. Of course this was long before Park Effects were understood. That would go on to haunt the Red Sox in later years (John Tudor, Bruce Hurst and Bobby Ojeda being prime examples)

RIP Gary Peters

edit: of course he was at the end of his career and was still a good pitcher…
