Thankfully I have no idea what thread you're referring to...

Edit: Ahh now I see, threads where we can't expose just how neurotic we all are ? WTF is the point ?

Yep--we maintain a big tent here, so there's a place for everyone.

This particular place is apparently for neurosis, snark, and gullibility.

Right, didn't McCourty have two feet out the door on Sunday night?
Yes. The "I-want-to-thank-you-for-five-great-years" kind of two feet out the door.

Patience.

The cuts are freeing up some space. And, as others have noted, the numbers seem to line up with the ballpark of his demands if reports are accurate and you read the tea leaves a certain way.

Bottom line: They're dancing. As are the Jets.

And while they're signaling that they're close to best and final, there is still some back-and-forth to come.

Yeah, this.

The other moves, especially Browner, only make sense if the Patriots still think they have a real shot at Revis and need the space.  There was no real reason to think that this had to be done by 4:00 so it going past that time isn't really an indication of much.  Lets see how everything plays out.

Worst case scenario, we have $14M in cap space (and more with a Mayo cut/restructure) and some interesting possibilities for improving the team elsewhere.

I'm checking Patsfans also for news. Someone started a Revis Related NEWS ONLY thread at 4:31 Eastern, and there are already 143 posts.

yea theres no fucking way the Packers sign him. I'd think they're among the least likely teams in the league aside from the Seahawks and Saints.

My understanding was that going forward they will wait on Revis before turning to Cromartie, Culliver, etc.
Mine too. And it's good business. Talk to the others, line them up, but wait. Which is why I didn't see Kimberly Martin's report as earthshattering.

But perhaps the breaking news is that the Jets are approaching the process in a coherent manner - as if they have a plan.

Dumb question, I'm sorry, but has any NFL player ever had a fully guaranteed contract of 3+ years?

Pats are fumbling this big time especially after giving McCourty a huge guarantee.

Matt Chatham essentially predicted this on NESN's news show by saying that it would come down to the nature of the guaranties -- full, lock solid versus ones with outs.

It's easy to say "just step up and make them the full kind," but if Revis got hurt in year 1, it would kind of suck to have no outs.  Not that I fully understand all of the parameters around the differences.

OK -- My worthless prediction is that the Pats cave on this one, and quickly.

Agreed. What Revis is supposedly asking is pretty reasonable shockingly enough

It's always risky business and it MIGHT come back to bite you. But HOF players are the ones you take the risks for.

What have they fumbled?
The process. Everyone knew it was all about guaranteed dollars yet the Pats are balking over 40 million for hall of fame player.

Bingo. Players like thus don't come along all the time.

I will offer this prediction with complete confidence. He will get the $40 mm guarantee from someone.

Revis obviously leaked this to Volin. I hope the Pats do not read that as a sign of weakness. Cause it isn't.

How much could an insurance policy/hedge against a $40MM guarantee cost?

I doubt they care about the cash as much as the cap room

If all Revis wants is 3/40 fully guaranteed the Patriots should have signed this deal by now. That's very reasonable, if that number is beyond what they hoped to get him for, what the fuck were they expecting? Of course, there's always the chance these numbers are all bullshit.

It's only reasonable if it's somewhere near the final price tag. If, as it would seem, Revis and the Pats are negotiating a floor, I can see why the Pats would be pushing back. Otherwise, the floor suddenly becomes something approaching a ceiling and a team with insane cap space and no other good players can swoop in and price a team like the Pats right out of the market.

I'm not (yet) worried.

They are worried about the knee. That's a risk you have to carry in this circumstance

This is true I guess he could be asking for 3/48 which I would still do no question.

Perhaps another stupid question, but why can't the spread it out over five years -- 5/75 with 40 guaranteed?

Wait, so everything that members of the sports media say about inside information that hasn't been revealed, confirmed, or completed is now gospel? To the point that the Patriots have blown the whole thing before it's even over?

This board wouldn't have traded Mankins or Seymour, those deals worked out. Paying a 30 year old CB with a history of knee injuries is risky, even if he is an all time great. I would have set 3/36 in real money as the threshold.

They can restructure it in that manner, IMO the cap is not the issue in a $40MM guarantee. I think injury is the risk the Pats are concerned about.

I'd like to keep him, but I know whatever decision is made will be in the best interest of the Patriots.
