Feels like they are going to lowball Brady with the cap room shrinking a bunch. Not that I disagree with giving DMac this contract but it seems it like it may be tough to bring TB12 back.

They have a lot of work to do to get cap compliant and get him an offer in the neighborhood of $20 million cash for next year before Wednesday. Unless there are some drastic moves coming I don’t see much of a way forward once the league year starts and the whole deferred amount hits the cap.

So where does DMac rank among BB draft picks? Top 10? Top 5??
Skimming through the list of BB picks I'm pretty sure in some order these would be the top 5:

Brady, Edelman, Gronk, Seymour, Wilfork

Mccourty is probably borderline top 10, in the mix with mayo, jones, hightower, collins, slater, and maybe gost

It’s hard for me to call Edelman and Brady great draft picks.

He’s had longer tenure than anyone other than Slater and Gost on the second list.

Not sure exactly what my list would look like but he would be up there. Like for instance to me Wilfork was kind of a no brainer. But the Gronk and Seymour picks especially stand out to me as excellent picks.

It’s all about how you look at it of course.

Some others worth consideration. Mankins, Asante Samuel, and Solder off the top of my head. I’d definitely put your first five ahead of DMac, probably Jones and Hightower, but no way he’s behind Mayo (not even sure he’s a better player and he was a top 10 pick), Collins (2.5 good seasons), or Slater (he’s one of the great ST players of all time, but a great starter on defense just has more value given the number of plays).

Love DMac and all he's been to this great dynasty so glad he's staying on that level. It' a big hit to a modest cap space so I'm guessing BB sees him as still close to his prime, since BB's usually ahead of the curve in letting good players go just before they start sliding.

Yeah, thinking about it again Collins shouldn't be on that list. I think with Slater (and ghost) it depends on how you rate the picks, yeah dmac was more valuable overall, but he was also a 1st round pick and paid a lot more money than a 5th and 4th round pick who are good enough at their positions that they might be on a hall of fame ballot someday, we can debate how much those things matter.

I do think Matt Light should be in the mix as well.

I've got no issues with the signing. He hasn't lost a step (yet); he covers a lot of ground and he's an exceptional tackler. He's also a tremendously respected locker room leader, by all accounts. Combine all that with his durability (to date), and you have to figure he's a good bet to provide value for the next two seasons.

On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

When I think of top Belichick draft picks, I always am blown away by how well the Pats have drafted at tackle and guard. Think of Mankins, Light, Thuney, Cannon, and Volmer none of these guys were highly rated in their draft classes, some were considered reaches and of course, Cannon was sick and that hurt his status. Plus in Dante, we trusted.

Never gets old.
Only pick above #10 that Belichick has ever had in New England, and he absolutely hit a home run. He's only had 3 others that were in the top 20 (Jerod Mayo #10 2008, Ty Warren #13 2003, Nate Solder #17 2011) and they all kicked pretty solid ass too.

Reviewing the 2001 draft also made me discover that Freddie Mitchell only played through the 2004 season. Belichick humiliating him (in return for him chirping before the SB, dissing Rodney etc) ended his career.

I'd throw in that the Mayo pick involved moving back from 7 and picking up an extra 3rd for his trouble. The 3rd didn't amount to anything but from a value standpoint it was a great move, and Mayo had a better career than the 7 through 9 picks combined anyway (not to mention #6 Vernon Gholston lol).
