Except they aren’t committing crimes and are instead doing subjective things so you’re making a stupid analogy. As in most things of life, this isn’t a simple binary thing and is more akin to a spectrum. Where everyone’s spectrum is different.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone sued Barstool Sports and contributor Kirk Minihane today for an interview about the Barstool/Bruins towel controversy he claims Minihane conducted without his permission - while pretending to be the Globe's Kevin Cullen.
In the suit, filed in Middlesex Superior Court, Curtatone says this violates the Massachusetts wiretap law, which requires a person's consent to record them over the phone.
Well this should get interesting.

I would absolutely love if this trick got Minihane thrown in jail.

Interesting Twitter thread by Dave Brown (Pats beat writer for the Concord Monitor and practicing attorney) on this civil complaint by the mayor. Looks like he took a pretty big dive into it.

THREAD: Speaking as an attorney, I feel that Mayor @JoeCurtatone has done the Courts of the Commonwealth a dissservice with his frivolous lawsuit against Kirk Minihane. The Mayor should either dismiss the suit or amend it to state a viable claim.

It doesn't sound like much of a lawsuit. Then again "No one will talk to me, so I pretend to be other people" is basically walking into City Hall Plaza at 5pm and pissing down your own leg to get laughs; so I'm not sure a lawsuit is necessary to further demonstrate Minihane's personal incontinence.

The PMT interview with Boras was good. Pretty clear why Boras got along with Cafardo, he kept pointing out his preference for scout evaluations of players over stats.

Some of what Boras said made sense but some of it was total shit. Do entrepreneurs get bailed out when they take a risk and fail? Why should baseball players be any different?

Exactly.
He also mentioned that sometimes he downgraded a salary ask based on fair market value. Would love to know when and for whom that applied.

My bad.

Although In my defense, between big cat and kfc and pft and yp and flounder and pinto and whatnot, it’s a bit confusing.

It would be like if I said every poster on Sons of Sam Horn is an unfunny moron because Dummy Hoy posts here.

Seems an awfully harsh reply over nothing.

It's really not. One is the host of a top 10 podcast in the country and had a show on ESPN. The others are/have not.
And I obviously don't pay enough attention to any of that to know the difference. I've sampled a bunch of Barstool product. I like Chicklets because hockey locker rooms are hilarious, and I listened to zero blog 30 for a while but Cons annoyed me too much. The rest of it ranged from not really my thing to thinking the persons were shitheads. I don't come in here and chastise people for listening just because I don't, but I do think it's funny the zealousness with which people defend all things Barstool. And I happen to find it funny that they all seem have ridiculous nicknames. Much like Animal House. But YMMV obviously.

For what it's worth, I laughed at "flounder and pinto". The space of overlap between ridiculous fratty nicknames and sports talk might as well be known as "Bro Culture".

On PMT, that Blake of the Year nonsense had no right to be even mildly humorous. But it was phenomenally awesome. Griffin, "Blake" Koepka, and Bortles were all absolutely hilarious. That was an extremely enjoyable 15 minutes. All three participants really brought the heat and were pretty excellent sports.

And this is coming from someone who doesn't listen to close to all PMT podcasts and had no idea what Blake of the Year even meant before I listened to yesterday's episode. If you were invested in this, I imagine it would have been a top podcast moment of the year for how stupid it was and how seriously everyone played it.

It was great. They had pretty instant rapport with the 2 Blakes in their initial appearances years ago, and the same thing happened with Brooks, so they made him an honorary Blake. What's even crazier is that they got Goff on the phone too.

Blake of the Year is the best award to follow all year. All these guys involved are great.

Does anyone else find Call her Daddy to be a hilarious podcast? It shows guys aren’t the only sex to be thinking that way.

I know this is going to be super shocking to everyone but seems the barstool/minigame alliance has already started to unravel. Kirk apparently wants all of the Stool to defend him against Murchison and Portnoy has told him he is the equivalent of Josh Gordon coming to the Patriots...

Dont know if there is more to it than that. Apparently turtleboy is involved (on Kirk's side). Yuck all the way around.

Who would've thought these crazy kids couldn't get along?

I listened to some of Kirk's podcast when it first launched, of course the first couple episodes were about bashing 'eei, which is understandable. But after awhile the focus turned to bashing other members of BS (for example, Carrabis). It immediately became like where did I hear this before.
I know he got called out on the fake in-house drama at 'eei, but pulling the same shit at BS is a shame. Talk about a one trick pony.

Most predictable shit of all time. I'm shocked it took even a week to bust out the fake drama routine.

I just dont get how his act garnered such a loyal fan base. He constantly picks fights with everyone around him wherever he works, says terrible stuff about anyone who criticizes him, and then plays the victim card over and over again. It's not like he is particularly insightful on any discussion point either.

Is it the victim thing that he uses constantly that builds sympathy.

Like I said, I truly don't get the appeal.

It's like wrestling. There are people who are genuine fans of the sport, the athleticism, etc. Then there are fans of the way these guys interact with each other. And if it's perceived a shoot, they love it. People want to know what it's like to be behind the curtain. Whether it's at EEI, Barstool, the Sports Hub, WWE, MLB, Hollywood. What I don't think that people get is that working at these places is just like working at your normal job; there are people you like, people you don't like, but most of the time you go in, do your work and go home.

If you really don't like Janet from accounting, you're not going to yell at her every day in front of the entire company. You get fired for doing that. People think that this is what Minihane is doing. But he's not. It's all a work.

Yeah he was boring. Mayfield was good today, and Stone Cold Steve Austin on Monday should be an all-timer.

Variety has a story today on Portnoy's threats: https://variety.com/2019/digital/news/barstool-sports-threatens-to-fire-employees-union-organization-1203300790/
According to the National Labor Relations Board, it is unlawful for employers to discourage (or encourage, for that matter) union activities or sympathies “by discrimination in regard to hire or tenure of employment or any term or condition of employment.” For example, the NLRB says, companies are prohibited from laying off or disciplining employees because they are pro-union.

Portnoy was informed on Twitter that his comments violated U.S. labor laws; he retweeted several that pointed it out. In response to one commenter who expressed hope that Barstool employees will form a union, Portnoy said, “Me too. Just so I can crush it and reassert my dominance.”

He's trolling. But it's not funny enough to be worth it.

EDIT: now @AOC quote tweets him. I'm sure Dave would say he wanted all this attention, galaxy brain, etc. but I'd bet he's actually sweating a little now.

Doesn't it only matter if some of the employees actually challenge him on it? Everyone in the world can accurately point out he's wrong, but who's going to do anything about it. I can't see people like Jared Carrabis leading a charge to unionize and sue his boss.

I think he's probably giggling that she retweeted him. He is already coming up with a slogan to plaster all over Barstool merch which will sell like wildfire because of this.

Maybe he'll just offer his employees a $50 gift card at the Barstool online store in lieu of being unionized.

That seems to be the standard.
