Rethinking Barstool?

The second biggest podcast on Barstool behind PMT has a 70% female audience.
This seems pretty relevant, moreso than the female CEO, or purportedly happy female employees. Call Her Daddy is one of the most popular podcasts in the country, bigger than anything at the Ringer, and its audience is overwhelmingly female. I don’t think there’s any real evidence that more women find Barstool (or any association with Barstool) offensive than either don’t, don’t know, or don’t care, and it’s not clear to me that the Bruins should allow their operations to be so heavily influenced by a vocal minority. Sure, it’s their decision. They can refuse to be sponsored by Chic-fil-a, or Hobby Lobby, or any number of companies that certain people have a problem with. Or they can not.

I've never heard of this podcast before, so I just scrolled through the top chart in Apple's Podcast app. I may have missed it, but it didn't seem to be anywhere in the top 200 listed, with PMT listed in 70th place.

EDIT: I did in fact miss it. It's 10th. I'll leave this up and stand corrected.

It does kinda fit the overall Barstool theme though. I'm not sure what the female version of a bro is, but I think it's aimed at that audience. Not that there's anything wrong with female bros I guess, ha.

For example, the most recent podcast is titled: "Cheating Olympics & Apartment Orgy" lol

Well, now we're really moving the goalposts from "offensive to women" to "offensive to enlightened women." And from what I understand, the currently dominant strain of feminist thought greatly disapproves of this kind of "slut-shaming," which is misogynist and patriarchal in and of itself.

*Not attacking you, as I recognize your italicized disclaimer. Just noting that "the kind of woman" who listens to Barstool content is probably not particularly relevant.

Obviously - and, if they make that decision, they can be criticized for it. What exactly are we even arguing about here?

Pretty sure we're arguing about whether anyone who takes the position that the criticism is unfounded or overblown is guilty of toxic masculinity in the first degree.

Really? Because the only poster who was accused of toxic masculinity in this thread was the one who told one of our relatively few female members that she "shouldn't care" about Barstool, and then followed up with saying no one should give a shit who is on a towel and that anyone criticizing Bartsool is guilty of "fake outrage."

We can discuss whether Barstool has improved/changed its image all we want, but to suggest that there is NOTHING to criticize about Barstool and the Bruins' decision to partner with them - which was the argument that started this whole tangent - is self-evidently farcical.

He offered the opinion that she shouldn’t be offended by the Bruins putting a Barstool logo on a towel. In response, he received numerous personal attacks that in nearly any other circumstance would be met with reprimand from the mods. But here they receive support.

I understand the goal is to make this place hospitable to posters of all genders, races, religions. And I support that endeavor. I also understand the prevailing liberal belief that those with “privilege” should never presume to suggest to those without what they should or shouldn’t be offended by. But that’s not a view shared by all, or even most in this country. And his opinion or the way he offered it is hardly outrageous, even if it may be unenlightened. I am sure she, or even others could have expressed the contrary viewpoint without resorting to a personal pile-on.

He's also the guy who asked like 3 times for examples of what poor innocent Barstool ever did and then after example after example was posted shockingly disappeared from the thread. So. Yeah.

Almost literally every sentence in what you wrote is wrong in so many ways it's really not worth it for me to address any further, but I'll just point out that it wasn't expressed as an "opinion" - it was expressed as a command. And then it was followed up by numerous false assumptions - that those who don't like Barstool are "faking" their outrage, that anyone who doesn't like Barstool has an "awesome life" and is "seeking things to be mad about" - and then he told those who disagreed with him to "get out of here." If you don't think that is shitposting worthy of condemnation I don't really know what else to say.

@mrsbeasley never said she was offended; that's your assumption or misread, and you've applied it several times here. She said she cared, in response to, literally, the question "who cares?" from another poster.

I wouldn't mistake someone's caring for their being offended, and you shouldn't either.

Fair enough. I’d be happy to hear what she meant by caring, if not being offended. Although I’m not sure how that substantively changes what followed.

Well, as I just suggested, think I do equate those in this context. But apparently you’ve now commanded me not to, according to @OurF'ingCity. Am I obliged to comply, or can I now label this “a fucking garbage post.”

For the record, I attacked his intelligence and shitastic logic, as evidenced by his posts. Other people attacked what was evident in his posts.

His reason for telling a woman she shouldn’t be unhappy about the Bruins’ relationship with Barstool because they’re not bad to women and hire women and a woman said they’re not bad to women.

That reasoning, which was first implied in his posts and then explicitly stated, was what was attacked. That’s not personal, except to the extent that he should have less shitty ideas.

We have the data on it's overall popularity, but is it possible to see what the audience makeup is (the other assertion that you were responding to).

The CEO said it was 70% female in some article I googled yesterday that was from March or April.

Edit: https://digiday.com/media/barstool-sports-made-more-than-15-million-from-podcasts/

And February. So close.

Edit 2: Also I have no idea how Apple does their algorithm but from all accounts PMT was the #14 downloaded podcast on Apple in 2018, ahead of Simmons at 19. Not sure how they ended up at 70 in Seven's view, especially since they came out with an episode this morning/last night.

I literally opened the app 5 minutes before making the post, went to the 'Browse' tab, selected 'Top Shows' and it displayed 200 podcasts (in a list labled 'Top Charts'), numbered 1-200. PMT was listed 70th. This is also how I initially missed and then located 'Call Her Daddy' at 10th.

Call Her Daddy is currently 12th and PMT 67th, using the same methodology.

I've listened to it a couple times. It's absolutely wild. While I can understand why it's very popular among the female audience, it looks like they try throughout the episodes to cater to males -- particularly when it comes to some of their pointed, um, "advice".

Honestly Barstool couldn’t have asked for this whole thing to go better and I’m sure Portnoy is thrilled with it. This is probably part of their unwritten business model because it starts a circular reference. Do something that is going to provoke those that don’t like Barstool, those people make comments, stoolies respond, people respond to the stoolies response, lather rinse repeat. You’ve got the mayor of Somerville wading into the fray and we’re now three days removed from the game.

Sometimes you can’t judge an entertainer by the unsavory cohort of their audience. But when the entertainer directly appeals to that cohort by appearing on a show that is targeted to the larger ideological group to which they belong, the inescapable conclusion is that the entertainer doesn’t simply tolerate that group’s attitudes, but in fact shares them and champions them.

The guy is a retrograde women-hater.

No, not the towel thing. The Deadspin folks flocked to alll social media platforms after the game last night to shit on Boston, the Bruins, and their fans. Bunch of NYC elitist dickbags.

And I loathe Barstool even more, but I'm done with DS.

Yeah, I'm getting a little bored with their anti-Boston rhetoric too. It's the same thing over and over and over again. Also I'm not a Bill Simmons fan anymore, but for some reason Deadspin can't seem to stop commenting on everything he does. Like he gave an interview to AdWeek about branded content and Deadspin was aghast that he'd do something like that. Maybe 50% of Deadspin's content are ads that are meant to look like content, so you can put away your fainting couch and clutchable pearls.

Aside from Magary and Roth, Deadspin is not that great.

It's so clearly the NYC thing at work too; they try to pretend it's not but it so clearly is. The EIC went on twitter after the Pats won bemoaning that sports wasn't fun any more. Fuck off, you don't have to cover them if they upset you so much when a Boston team wins.

It doesn't help that that shitstain Portnoy is a Boston guy and Barstool comes across like a Boston-based site, either.

Barry is about the only tolerable writer at DS left. I unfollowed/blocked all the others.

I'm not sure if it's so much a New York thing (Deadspin doesn't love the Yankees, they rag on the Jets and Knicks, etc) but it might be a clicks thing and a thing where Boston is on top right now and we're kind of the bully of the sports landscape. Add to that the people from Boston who have shaped the sports landscape in the last few years (Simmons, Barstool to name two) and it behooves Deadspin to take the piss out of Boston. And if you add the click rates going up when they do it (I have no idea whether this is true, but I am pretty sure that it is) then it only makes economically sense for the editorial staff to do so.

Also, we are a bit hatable. I mean there are a lot of Boston fans who are incredibly dumb and backwards. Granted, there are a lot of every sports fandom who are like that, but a. Boston is on top right now (like I said) and b. no one does this stuff better than us. We have a unique sense of arrogance and self-pity that not a lot of fans can match. I would guess that would wear on the rest of the nation.

The issue with Deadspin is that what began (and what exists in most other reputable sports outlets) as the "aren't we sick of Boston?" aside morphed into "Boston sucks" then "Boston fans suck" and then that sideshow became the focal point of all Boston-related coverage.

Like, yeah. People are sick of Boston sports. Totally understandable. And yes, lots of Boston fans are loathsome and act superior and won't shut up. But...that has nothing at all to do with what goes on on the field of play. Yet that's the story, regardless of whether Boston teams win or lose. So they are often openly choosing *not* to cover the game or team in question, even if that team is the best or second best in a given season, in favor of just stirring shit and throwing chum to people who are more a fan of hating Boston than the sports they claim to enjoy.

"Hate Boston" is something they now have a vested interest in fomenting, because they have become Option A for people seeking that material out. It's no different from the back (or front) page of the New York Post, although I'm sure Deadspin writers would swear up and down that they are completely different because reasons.

Ironically, I think Magary, who was once the flag-bearer of "God, Boston is annoying" is now the most obviously in on the joke. I don't think some of the others are joking.

I'm not sure if I agree with you 100% on this. Magary has some serious Boston/New England PTSD from his one year at Bates. I'm not sure what those dudes really did to him -- he wrote some stuff awhile back -- but the dude has real hate for New England. A few years ago, he said that the two football teams he hates the most are Washington and the Pats. Considering that he lives in the DC area, roots for the Vikes and has to listen to Skins talk for 12 months a year, I can see why. The Pats stuff is visceral with him.

Other than that, I agree with pretty much everything you said above.

I don’t think his NE hatred is as potent as it once was but there’s def more to his apparent animus than shtick. The reason I say that is I don’t think he feels any particular pressure to feed the NE SUCKS clickbait machine they operate but yet he goes to that well frequently. There’s an army of other writers/aggregators working for Deadspin that can take care of that.

He went to Exeter, and I think his parents were living in CT at the time. Then I think he went to Michigan for a year, cried the whole time, and then I thought he finished up at Colby. His exposure to "real Boston" is almost non-existent (in other words, if he went after the prep school / NESCAC set, I'd get it - but he mainly uses the accent, southie stereotype as his primary whipping horse). Either way, he's an insecure dude who was the type of fat and friendless outcast that desperately wanted to be one of the cool kids. All credit to him for growing up, finding a voice, and writing some pretty good stuff over the years, but found out that he could weaponize the anti-Boston stuff for clicks over the last 10 years. The rest of Deadspin followed suit, except they don't know how to at least be funny about it, and lack all ability to be self-deprecating.

It might be a result of being miserable here, but I have little doubt that if the teams of any other city in America went on a run like the Boston teams have: 1) their fans would become insufferable enough to engender national dislike and 2) Magary would shit on them. To me, the bolded sentence is the key. All of his Boston-shitting to me, is done with a wink. He's a sports fan. He gets it. And he's a good sharp funny writer who doesn't take himself too seriously. Ironically (I think), the dislike of him and others is often a result of Boston fans taking themselves too seriously. Ooohhh, someone called Tom Brady a cheater. Again. Ooooh. If that *ever* started bothering me, I'd stop watching sports.

And to bring it within the thread subject.....Barstool is something different than that. There's no winking. The people most responsible for content actually believe that a woman's primary role is to serve them and they should be grateful for the opportunity. And even if they dont believe it themselves, they are monetizing it by soliciting those who do. There's little difference, IMO. NY sports teams are, with the exception of the Yankees, by and large a dumpster fire. Look at the parade of suck: Jets, Giants, Mets, Knicks. Look at the abject mediocrity: Rangers, Devils, Nets. Look at the Isles, who have no real home and slipped under the radar despite making the playoffs. Only the Yankees have been good, and they're the Evil Empire so the Mets fans on DS shit on them anyway.

Deadspin would lose all credibility if they didn't shit on the first group, at the very least.

For somebody that pretty much only follows the PMT and Foreplay guys, I'm not sure that's entirely fair. They produce a ton of content. Yes, you'll have no problem finding stuff from Portnoy and KFC that could prove your point, but a lot of the others don't seem to fall into that category. Maybe I'm wrong.

Fair enough. And without knowing which brands drive their revenue its possible the shit is little more than a loss leader. OTOH -- I have a hard time separating the company from its de facto leader. Others' MMV on that, though.

the fact that there is a general atmosphere of bullshit that the assholes find attractive can also reinforce the clicks and interactions with non-bullshit content, too. They're not segregated (ha!).

If I'm laundering money through my restaurant for criminal gangs and get busted, I don't get to tell the cops "yeah, there's that stuff, we've gotten a lot cleaner over the years, but look at this fine establishment we run! Look at our happy customers! SO MUCH of what we do isn't money-laundering!"
