Yes that one. I agree with the reasoning. It's an awful thing to say and comical in an absurdist way.
They do not get any benefit of the doubt here. They thought it was funny because a guy made fun of someone with Down's Syndrome. They think it should be OK to do so. Thinking otherwise is blindly ignoring their whole history.

Right because Lewandowski was going for yucks.

"I know that your mom just died of cancer, but the way she made that weird face right before her last breath left her ... PRICELESS! So comical. So absurdist! Like Monty Python, only real life."

Well it's pretty clear Lewandowski is going for yucks, especially given the context in which most times "Womp, womp" is used as a phrase. That or he wanted to bring up the losing horn on a game show. Who goes for yucks in a situation like this unless you have something seriously wrong with you? That is what makes it absurd and comical in a "laughing at you" instead of "laughing with you". Which is pretty much exactly what he said and I agree with.

That seems to be in contrast with the below. Which you conveniently left out because it has been clear you have an agenda you are peddling, one that I don't necessarily disagree with for certain people there, namely Portnoy. And was the question I asked and you ignored to get on your soapbox and make a broader point around some POV you are thrusting on me as my own POV.
  • Katz: “I think the problem is you’re not realizing that I’m not laughing at the misfortune, I’m laughing at how out of touch and absurd that was.”

So at best, two out of the three guys are assholes? Great.

And this all came after their colleague, who is a first-generation Mexican-American, explained, "Yeah, I don't really find that funny" and then these three dudes continued to explain why she's not right, is completely tone-deaf.

Even if you juxtapose what Lewnandowski said with his position in relationship to the President, it's really the opposite of funny. I'm not sure why anyone would find it amusing, much less spend ten minutes trying to explain why it was so funny.

Well, yes, two of the three are assholes. I would be lying if part of my motivation for posting that was a defense of Katz, as he is not cut from the same cloth as Portnoy, who is a jackass. I don't know anything about the other person to have an opinion on him. The quoting of two of the three was a weird piece of selective editing I wanted to call out.

The issue is they're arguing two separate things. The comment is deplorable, which is what the Mexican-American appears to be addressing. The fact that someone would use that phrase as a means of reacting to the situation at hand is comical from a darker, more absurdist perspective as Big Cat suggested. It's laughing at stupid people. You do not share that view and that appears to be that.

I don't share that view because I don't believe that Lewandowski is stupid. Or that he misspoke. Or that he made a verbal gaffe. I think that he knew exactly what he was doing and then one of his goals is to muddy the waters by making people argue about his intentions of speech were (sorta like what we're doing now), not what he was saying.

It's obvious that we aren't on the same page as each other, but you shouldn't underestimate Lewandowski and laugh at what the clown said. That's how we got into this whole stupid mess in the first place.

"Ha! Trump said Mexico is going to pay for a border wall! What a clown!"
"What a goof! Trump just called Marco Rubio, Little Marco!"
Etc.

He is stupid because he is an asshole without a degree of sympathy towards others and is using a one liner as a means to make a political point and rile people up. It's strategic but still stupid. There are multiple definitions of stupid, you have decided to narrowly define the one I used above in a way that my post is clearly not intended for.

For what it's worth, the perspective from Liz (the colleague who spoke up that it wasn't funny at all).

https://www.barstoolsports.com/barstoolu/who-knows-barstool-better-an-employee-or-a-bankrupt-website

In no way, shape or form were Dave, Riggs, or Dan laughing at children being forcibly removed from their parents. They were not “laughing at the destruction of Latino families.” They were laughing at the evil Nazi asshole who moronically said “womp womp” upon hearing about a Down Syndrome child who was taken away from her mother. They were laughing at how completely inappropriate and ridiculous it was that he said that. They were laughing at the absurdity of the response.

I didn’t think it was funny.

As a first-generation Mexican-American, it’s a subject that is very personal to me. I am extremely proud of my heritage, my family, where we came from, and the struggle to get to where we are. Naturally, watching human beings (who in this case happen to be Mexican) treated like trash is absolutely heartbreaking. We are all a product of our past- it frames our mindsets, principles, and yes, our humor.

While I didn’t agree with their laughter, I understand where it was coming from, and it was NOT a place of deeply rooted racism. Latinos are not a “sideshow” to them. We are not “something to be laughed at or mocked.” Dave didn’t “put me on the spot,” he gave me the opportunity to speak my truth, whether he agreed with it or not. I chose to be there, I chose to give my opinion, and I’m proud I did.
...
Should we have maybe avoided talking about this subject altogether? Probably. We aren’t a serious political network, and this particular subject is extremely delicate, rightfully so.

Rozier's first appearance on Mickstape last week was alright but a little off because they were in 3 different places. His appearance Thursday was excellent. He discussed his entire draft experience and they asked fun questions about the process. It also helped they were all together so they could play off each other. Highly recommended.

Why? They were mocking this idiot. If you want to be fake outraged go do it at Lewandowski not the people ripping him. Unless that point sailed over your head.

Or....don’t watch.

"To drop a 'Womp Womp' right there was so awesome."

It's 2:30 into the piece.

At 3:45 the dude in the middle says, "Funny trumps everything and that's just fucking hilarious!" talking about the womp, womp. Or at least I assume that he was talking about that because the clip immediately preceding that was Rachel Maddow crying.

They didn't start walking that back until Liz said that she didn't find it funny.

I'm trying to figure out how these words and their meaning "sailed over my head".

Edit: And I'm not "outraged" or "fake outraged" (which I'm not sure exactly what that is) but these dudes said something pretty shitty. It's okay to say that. Just like it's okay to say that Alex Cora made a mistake in a game. Not every hill is one to die on.

Your defense of bro culture reminds me of the time we had people trying to defend using the word "fag" because, to them, it wasn't homophobic or even anti-gay. It was making fun of people who, you know, "act like fags."

This seems a strange place for you to stand on principle, but you have clearly decided that you and the barstool bros are the victims here.

Generally, if you have to explain why something’s funny, it isn’t.

And, if you have to tell someone why something is so funny they shouldn’t be offended, it isn’t.

You know how you can have a good, sarcastic relationship with your significant other and talk crap about each other now and then and laugh it up, but when times are tense or raw it’s a bad place to drop a dig? That’s kind of where we’re out now. Maybe us bros can forgo our sacred right to laugh and joke until people are out of cages and a sex offender is out of office.

Good lord guys. This is what they do. Like it or not. Watch or don’t. Nobody cares. They’re not going to change. I’m not one who gets offended by every little thing and generally find them funny.

I really don’t give a shit if you guys like them or not, I’m just sick of the outrage when that’s the schtick. Trump is ruining everyone’s brain. We’ve had huge asshole presidents before and we will have them again (and I am anti-Trump), but people were in cages at the border when Obama was President too.

I don't listen. But I read about it. Sorry, but "it's their shtick" is not some sort of magic shield against criticism.

And I don't recall anyone close to Obama defending his policies by mocking those who were hurt by those policies.

Baghdad Bob, as an example, was funny because he was similarly evil and regressive but he was losing. That was the point. He couldn't help saying absurdly stupid things but the mechanism by which we found humor in it was that it was in the face of the annihilation of his evil.

Corey Lewandowski speaks for the leader of the free world. That's why it isn't funny. It being offensive or not is irrelevant; it is definitionally not funny. I get they're laughing because he said the meanest thing at the worst time or whatever post-hoc broshit they're inventing. I totally understand that. It isn't funny.

But we're all free to have shit taste, and so goes Bartstool Sports.

I could just do with a little less fake outrage from @southshoresoxfan if at all possible. Do you just want to be mad?

Ah, that makes more sense. But saying "its their shtick" while true is really a non sequitur. We can debate the merits of the shtick itself, no? Like if some guys "shtick" was making sexist jokes, ok maybe its less bad if they don't truly believe that stuff. But it kay still be a shitty shtick to have no?

That’s fine. And a different discussion. But they make fun of the left, the right, men, women, etc pretty equally. They certainly skew towards a white male 21-35 audience, but that doesn’t make them bad, it makes them good business people.

Just because no one on their roster has been accused of sexual assault doesn't mean they aren't complicit in the activities that made the #MeToo movement necessary.

And that anyone disagreeing is "outraged," but you being outraged at the "fake" outrage isn't outrage. Are you beginning to see how stupid it is to even go there?

Lol I am not outraged. At all. I’m genuinely perplexed why you think you’d be getting a different type of humor from Barstool than you’re getting. You are outraged. As much or more than the people you're pinning outrage on. Maybe we can stop with the "outrage" stuff now that we've probed how stupid it is as a rhetorical device?

I know exactly what Barstool is and what it does. I read about this story elsewhere. Why do you think that they're always doing versions of this is some sort of cover?

I get that you and they are hiding behind "THEY ARE LAUGHING AT LEWANDOWSKI," I can read and you've repeated it several times. But as I said upthread and you ignored, it still doesn't make it funny, so this isn't an issue with my common sense I can promise you. Laughing at a guy mocking a kid with Downs syndrome when he has the means and support to effectuate that attitude just isn't funny. It might be funny to laugh at you if you said it, for instance. Not him though. This was exacerbated when these guys brought in a Mexican American woman and repeatedly explained to her in the same fashion you are that "seriously though, it is funny."

For things to be funny, a certain mechanism for humor has to be in place. "Oh he said the worst thing imaginable" unfortunately isn't ridiculous coming from him. It is our current reality. That's why it isn't funny.

I mean, an article from 2012 that references an incident from 2010 doesn't exactly make the point you think you're making.

The company (much like this website) has grown significantly since then. Do they still have some meatheads who occasionally say stupid things there? Yup. But to lump the entire organization under one banner makes no more sense than assuming everyone here is like or condones Plympton 91.

For some reason, you can't seem to fathom that other people can both understand that some people have a different sense of humor and also think that it's a bad thing.

Some of these people might even explain why they think it's bad. You could listen--that's one option. Or you could just say it's ridiculous to have opinions about the evil that others do.

I think the latter is weird.

Also, Barstool is not the fucking ocean. That's the whole fucking point--we can change some parts of our world. Disagreeing is one thing, but ridiculing people for wanting to change the world for the better, even if you think it their specific plan is misguided, strikes me as bad form.

I've met you in real life, I believe, yes? You strike me as the kind of guy who would throw an asshole out of a party, or am I mistaken?

Are the people who said that women deserved to be raped still on the payroll? Is he not still the Pres? Read my post again. That shit was acceptable to say in 2010. It's part of what made the #MeToo movement necessary... Would you disagree?

Barstool had done little since then to try to distance themselves from redpill behavior and its market. It's OK to call them out every time they are a horrible entity. If you want, I will waste time finding examples you dont want to hear.

Stop being triggered because you are want to believe your are not part of the problem.
