I hope they don't replace him with the Pawtucket guy a) he was terrible b) the Sox might go 0 and 162.

Educated guess is that he's getting a bigger, better-paying gig (NESN is notoriously cheap, right?). He's done postseason games already and he has the experience and talent for it.

Tanguay is saying that when the team stinks, the NESN execs think that the color/PBP guys should bring in ratings and these guys aren't.  NESN execs sound clueless.

I don't even love Orsillo, but this is a shame.  I'd imagine he will get another job in a nanosecond.

He's a generic version of Sean; was never a fan. How long will he have to wait to get a new job? Might hurt his effectiveness.

Well that's pretty chilling when considering who they might go after to replace him.  Who the hell tunes into a 3+ hour baseball game to listen to the announcers?

I'm picturing a Ryan Seacrest-type hack next season.

That might be the dumbest thing that Tanguay has said this year, and that is saying something.

Bring back McDonough and Monty
Mcdonough comes with WAY too much baggage and is Monty still in broadcasting?

This is it.  Has to be.  This is the same reason the sideline reporter gig (and studio anchors too) has been a revolving door.  The pay is probably shit (relatively speaking) and they (NESN) aren't interested in paying top dollar to retain good talent.  It's actually shocking DO has stuck this long.  He's been doing national post-season stuff for 6-7 years now.

This sucks. I know not a lot of people love Don but I always enjoyed him and I think there's a lot of bad broadcasters out there.

I'm willing to bet the broadcast quality is worse next year.

No idea how EEI and NESN play together, but would Dave O'Brien be able to take over? He's solid and has tons of experience.

WEEI probably pays more than NESN does. NESN is notoriously cheap.

Well I'll certainly miss Don's recitation of every last detail from the opposing team's Press Guide.  Did you know Matt Albers has a 1.44 ERA over his last 57 innings going back to last season and that he's also a chronic hemorrhoid sufferer?

NESN could do worse than Orsillo, and they probably will, but it's no great loss.  Farewell, announcer boy.

I'd say Dave O'Brien will take over.  He's in house so to speak and NESN can pay him as much as ESPN does to broadcast Monday nights.  He can still stay with ESPN in the offseason to do college basketball as well.

I think I just heard Tanguay say he heard that Remy is only doing 40 games next season?

Orsillo gets a bad rap here but is one of the better PBP guys in MLB. Sure he and Remy get chatty and silly (less so this season thankfully) but he is still better than the vast majority of PBP guys working. If you have .tv or EI poke around other broadcasts and you'll notice fairly quickly.

D&C say the rumor is that Remy is only going to do half of the home games next season.

Don isn't great but he's solid and I have no problem listening to him.  My biggest concern is how bad his replacement will be.  I don't have high hopes.

My guess is Cafardo.

Would have much rather seen Remy go. Together they have become insufferable to me("oh my god Jerry, he threw a slice of pizza at him"!!!!!!! Tears , convulsions of laughter) But when DO works with others like Eck, and some his partners on the national broadcasts he has done, I think he is actually pretty decent. Of course, if this a financial move upward for him to a permanent national gig, then good on him. But if Werner/Kennedy/NESN are forcing him out, eff them. All you have to do is sample extra innings for some out of market play by play guys to know how much worse there is out there.

What do we have to do to get Speier in the booth full-time?

Who was the guy who filled in on the west coast trip right after the All Star break?  If he's in the running as a replacement, we're doomed.

Werner probably has the "Next Sox announcer" reality competition show lined up.  The trick will be finding room on the fall / winter schedule. The public surely demands Charlie Moore 10 times a week!

Josh Maurer.  Remy's contempt for the guy was palpable.

DO is easily in the top tier of PBP guys nationally.  We don't hear the national (ESPN, Fox) guys every night (obviously).  If we did, we would gouge our eyeballs out and puncture our ear drums with ice picks at the likes of Buck et al (and I actually like Buck).  DO manages the game and the "business fill" about as well as anyone, and along with his post-season work and work with NESN Remy fill-ins (Eck, Lyons, et al) demonstrates his flexibility.

He should get a gig in a heartbeat.

I'm disappointed he is parting ways with the Sox.

This sucks. The replacement will very likely be worse. I'm hoping for Sean Grande. He filled in for radio play by play last season for a few games and was excellent.

I enjoy Orsillo a lot. Bummer. I think people who don't like him don't listen to other local broadcasts enough

Eck for analyst!!

Dave Obrien would be a solid replacement

I get the Orioles, Pirates and Nationals Broadcasts every night, it's absolutely unbearable.  You have no idea how great a loss this is.

Speier would be great for some of us, but deemed too nerdy for the majority, but the question is could NESN do dual versions of the show, using the same video feed of the on-field action, same advertisements, but different announcers? -- one with stats and nerds, and the other with Wally sitting in his miniature lawn chair?  One version telecast on the regular NESN channel, the other telecast on the NESN overflow channel.

Try it first for home games to see what the response is before you get into traveling expenses?  But given the importance of NESN ratings and revenue, the return could be great for a relatively small investment.

Isn't this kind of pioneering approach we should expect from a Tom Werner?

Don's one of the best.  I don't see him easily replaced at all.
I'm not a fan of Dave O'Brien.  Aside from the pipes, he's pretty bland and takes innings off when Joe Castig does pbp.
If the Remy rumor is true, I hope they go with multiple people to take over to allow feedback from viewers first.
God - please let it not be Maurer or someone completely vanilla.

This is not good.  Also having watched a lot of other team's broadcasters, I really think DO is as good as it gets.  I don't mind he and Remy getting dumb in games that aren't close.  Unless it's Dave O'Brien taking over, I'm absolutely terrified of the lowest-common-denominator type that NESN will plug in.  Not surprised Remy is taking a step back, if that's true.  But losing Orsillo sucks.

Yeah, they're going to spend money on something maybe 5-8% of the viewing public might watch.

I don't think they can. I'd be very surprised if OB took the gig. He's an elite broadcaster.

Maurer was awful.  It would be tough to watch the games next year with the sound on.
