Considering his agent one could argue this means X wanted to stay and take a deal that would make it work (though we dont know anything yet obviously).

If those numbers are correct it is a great deal.

I wonder when the opt out kicks in, and whether there's any front-loading

Speier says the extension will start next year and it is 6 years $120 million. I'm guessing the 7/132 is including this year's salary.
If X was already getting 12M this year, is there a difference between "7/132 starting now", and "6/120 starting next year" - as far as the luxury tax is concerned in this, and future seasons?

It would be 18.9 this year and the following 6 vs 12 this year and 20 for 6 years, I think.

Well this is great news. Now how do I retract the fifty posts I had whining about how the Sox should have sent him down to the minors in 2014 to push his free agency forward a year because he was clearly never never ever going to sign an extension?

Haha this is awesome. Not just a great deal but I was worrying I'd have to change my son's name had he been wearing pinstripes next year.

I'm guessing the opt outs will make it less team friendly, but he'll be in his age 32 season at the end of his 7 year contract. He'll turn 33 that October. There shouldn't be any down years.

Over/under on 8/$192M?

Edit: Beaten by LesterFan.

If 7/132 is true, then it's an absolute steal.
Players are increasingly capitulating to the market power of the owners.

If that’s true, it’s only a $19 million AAV. Or, what the Red Sox paid Pablo Sandoval and less than what they paid Hanley Ramirez half a decade of general price inflation and revenue growth ago.

Absolute great deal for Red Sox ownership and, due to luxury tax realities, their fans.

And there's the buzzkill. Since it starts this year, it's essentially a 2 year extension if he continues to perform.

Does the potential work stoppage in 2022 have more of an effect on X or the team, given the timing of the opt-out?

Opt out is a win-win in my book. If he plays great for 3 years then leaves when he is 30 then that’s not a bad scenario.

That’s the only way you’re getting him for a discounted price as a Boras client.
It’s also the year the new CBA would kick in if there’s no crippling strike. So, if Tony Clark avoids giving up even more ground, then he could get his fair share of the revenues players generate.

The extension starts next year so it will be at least a 3 year extension.
This is great news but I'm not shocked at the numbers, I didn't see a huge market for him out there.

Edit:Opt out stuff was cleared up.

This is what I've been saying for the past year. Lot of good shortstops out there.
Having said that, this tells me that Xander, like Sale, wants to stay in Boston. Love it.

Incredible news. Less than half of the money it took to sign Machado, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Bogaerts has a better year.

Interesting timing of the opt out. Lindor, Seager, Story, and Correa are slated to hit free agency a year prior.

If the FA market performs the same the next two years as it did the past two, I Doubt he opts out. That is if a long work stoppage doesn’t cripple baseball

I am shocked that a Boras client signed before free agency. The last notable Boras client I remember doing a team-friendly deal before free agency was Jered Weaver.
a Boras client wants to stay with us!
I’m guessing that the last two FA markets spooked Boras and caused a change in how he operates.

So now the best hitter on this years FA market is.

Abreu?

Michael Silverman saying - "There's an 8th year in the Bogaerts deal. If Bogaerts reaches 525 plate appearances in 2025, an eighth year worth $20M kicks in for 2026. So, total deal could be 8 years, $152 million. He will have an opt-out after the 2022 season, when he'll be 29 years old."

Is anyone else getting the “I want to keep playing for Alex” vibe from these extensions?
Given Xander’s comments about Farrell last year at this time, I think it’s fair to assume swapping managers helped his decision to stay.

Winning championships and having a commitment from ownership and a manager like Alex Cora makes it desirable for these guys to want to stay. Yes, they get paid fairly but everyone wants to win at the end of the day.
