All these stories give me some hope that he'll somehow screw things up for himself enough to get a lifetime ban, allowing the Yankees to get out of the remainder of that contract.

Faint hope of course, but a man can dream.

The Yankees benefitted from ARod's PED use to the tune of two MVP awards and a World Series championship.  They should be stuck with him and not let off the hook.

The second best thing, aside from getting out of the contract, would be the epic meltdown it would cause in some forums of this magnificent board.

A career year for somebody else maybe, his current .914 OPS isn't even up to his career average of .940.

Arod really has done a lot for himself this season. He's always having fun, there's no drama, the team and him seem to have awesome chemistry. I'm excited about the team but Arod somehow makes this team a lot more enjoyable.

Never ever thought I'd say that.

Raises hand.

I posted multiple times in this forum and the Yankees one that I thought the year off and some rest would do him good and he'd bounce back and have a good year. He's certainly over shot even my expectations but I never understood the presumption that a year away he would suddenly lose the ability to hit a baseball. All the nagging injuries got time to heal.

First thought upon reading this was, who's missing?  Second thought, just call him, Cap'n A-Rod.

On the one hand, I'm thinking there's no way he's going to look like a fool again and starting taking undetectable PED's after being banned a year.

On the other hand I'm thinking, there's no way he should be putting up a season like this.

The Yankees were trying to find ways to get his ass kicked off the team and now he's having an MVP-type year. I'm gonna cry.

(Apologies for the late quote- don't often visit this lounge).

An OPS of 917 (his current) goes a lot further in 2015 than what it used to when he was in his mid twenties. The offensive landscape has changed a lot over his long career, so his average OPS isn't a great measure. The bulk of his career, including his prime, was when a 900 ops put you in the top 40 or 50 in the majors, not the top ten.

At the moment there are 9 players with an OPS better than 917.
Go back 10 years to 2005 when Alex had his best offensive season (by OPS+) there were 20 players that bettered that mark.
Go back 15 years to 2000 (his second best season by OPS+) there were 40 (!) players with OPS above 917.

He hasn't put up an OPS+ as high as this year (154) in 8 years. Career OPS+ 143.
Of his 16 seasons with 100 or more games played he has only 6 with an OPS+ higher than the current year. Only one of those has been since he turned 30.

On the other hand he has nothing to lose.  He's hated everywhere but NY, he's not getting into the HoF, he has all the money he could ever need- why not?
